In all the years that archival Grateful Dead recordings have been coming out, there have been just three from the red-hot fall of 1971, Keith Godchaux’s landmark first tour with the band. Those would be Dick’s Picks Vol. 2, a rippin’ single-disc release of the second set of the group’s Halloween show at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Download Series Vol. 3 from the 10/26 Rochester show and Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 2 from November 15, 1971 in Austin, Texas. Now there is a fourth: Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 features the complete October 22, 1971 concert from the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on two discs, with a third disc culled from the previous night’s scorcher at the same venue.

Keith came into the band in mid-September ’71, at a time when Pigpen was desperately ill and the band was hungering for something new to help fill out their sound. A sparkling pianist, Keith was a complete unknown at the time, yet, miraculously it seemed, fit in with the Dead immediately. The live “Skull & Roses” double-album (recorded in the winter-spring of ’71) had just come out, and the band was still enjoying a surge of unprecedented popularity since Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty were released the previous year. They were on a roll!

Never ones to rest on their laurels, however, the band continued their torrid pace of introducing new songs: “Sugaree” and “Brown-Eyed Women” first appeared in the summer of ’71, and that fall, when the band with Keith hit the road, starting out in Minneapolis (10/19) and then moving on to Chicago (10/21-22), they had a whole bunch of other freshly minted tunes waiting to be born—“Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Comes A Time” and “One More Saturday Night,” all of which appear on this set.

The sparkle and verve that Keith brought to the band is immediately apparent, as he tears through rockers and bouncy mid-tempo numbers with the confidence of someone who had been playing this music forever. If the quiet keyboardist was nervous or unsure of himself on this first jaunt, it certainly wasn’t apparent. And you can feel the electricity in the rest of the band, as Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill absorb and play off of the amazingly inventive musings of their new recruit. Of course Pigpen’s absence was deeply felt (and the band acknowledged it at every stop), but Keith’s entrance was so seamless and the energy he injected into the music so impressive, the group didn’t appear to lose any of the momentum they had been building tour after tour.

The songs are a blend of old, still-recent (from Workingman’s Dead on) and brand-new. One forgets that crowd-pleasers such as “Bertha,” “Deal” and “Playing in the Band” had come into the repertoire only eight months earlier, and “Truckin’” and “Sugar Magnolia” were just over a year old. Even a bunch of the cover tunes were relatively recent additions—“Big Railroad Blues,” “Me & Bobby McGee” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Keith handles all of those (and earlier chestnuts like “Cold Rain and Snow” and “Beat It On Down the Line”) with his characteristic aplomb, but perhaps most impressive is how he fares on the Dead’s big jamming numbers. On Disc Two, you’ll hear his thoughtful and inventive contributions to a truly stellar, 29-minute version of “That’s It for the Other One.” And on Disc Three (from 10/21), listen to him as he navigates through a spectacular “Dark Star,” which is split by a spirited romp through “Sitting on Top of the World.” The encore of 10/21 also features the first of only three “old school” (pre-hiatus) versions of “St. Stephen” Keith played on.

Most of the 12,000 limited edition copies of Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 are already spoken for by subscribers to the series, but there are a still a few thousand available through Dead.net only. Dead Letter Office Edition 27/500
My original copy had been lost in the mail initially, but did eventually arrive nearly a month after it was originally shipped. I had contacted Dr Rhino about mine being lost in the mail, and I sent him an additional email when my package arrived finally. When I looked in my mailbox today, I saw the familiar package and thought that it was Dave's Picks Vol 4 as an extra early arrival. To my surprise, it was a replacement copy of Vol. 3. At this point, the Dead.net crew, Dr Rhino and Mary E have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help out in every way and and thank you all! The bonus bandana is cool too.

As I suspected, the problem would appear to lie with USPS. That an "issue" affected several orders would seem to be something of an understatement, judging by the number of posts on that subject here. It is not made clear whether they know precisely which orders are affected, so do they know who to contact about the status of their orders or should people who are still waiting contact customer service to notify them that their order has not yet arrived? Still, thanks guys for the clarification - it is appreciated.

Power of Positive Thinking

Perhaps if we all took up Norman Vincent Peale's philosophy we could kick this thing in gear... Imagine the postman whistling a tune (what tune could that be?), trundling up to your postal repository unit and gently placing your copy of DaP3 inside, lovingly insulated by wads of junk mail where it sits, just waiting for you to come home from work -- But wait, there are storm clouds on the horizon, the mailman turns out to be --Neumann(!) and he is so pissed that the post office is going under that he is folding, spindling and mutilating like there is no tomorrow. Now he's flinging disc 2s like frisbees at the dog yapping in the next yard.... Peale, get your ass back here! A rhino has hijacked your masterpiece!

Not Received DP 3

I have also not received DP 3 which shipped on July 30 according to a confirmation E-Mail I received from Dead.NET. I received the previous 2 DP within days of shipping. Obviously it never shipped or is long gone! (As another poster suggested Newman from Seinfeld is taking revenge on Dead Heads). I sent an E-Mail 10 days ago - No Response I called a week ago - we will respond within 3 days and assigned a case # I just called tonight - some orders have not arrived but we have no idea why and are investigating... The lack of informaiton available to customer service rep is quite surprising and made my call just now frustrating...My guess is everyone knows more but is not talking and someone is calculating the cost of manufacturing more discs and shipping them and the potential fallout of more copies in circulation than the limited edition (nonsense sales strategy by the way!) I asked that they simply ship a replacement which fell upon deaf ears (I would return the original if it ever shows, which I highly doubt!) Anyway, glad there is at least an acknowlegment above... It would be nice if they could assure us we WILL get the DP 3 and that it will be relatively soon! I think some kind of accomodation should be made such as a discount on next year's subscription for those who went through this snafu. Mayvbe a discount on Spring 90 then you might actually sell that one out! Thanks!

Tracking Number

As Columbo always said "Just one more thing" My tracking number has no information associated with it... not a good sign And the cust serv rep last week said that there is never any tracking information on USPS until the item actually arrives. Is this possible! Maybe John Corzine has stolen Dick's Picks so he can sell them and buy Spanish Bonds... like my cash was not enough! Let's get the SEC on the case!

If you're still waiting, and you reported this issue to me before today, your has already been passed along to Dr. Rhino, who is even now trying to figure out what's what. If you are still waiting and you HAVEN'T previously reported it to me, please tell all to the good Dr. at drrhino(at)rhino.com -- the more info he's got the better he'll be able to find out what's what, and how to fix it. Thanks and so sorry for the hassle.

DavesPicksVol#03 Dead.Net/Rhino update

The Rhino folks need to get their act together and send out NEW copies to all that are still haven't received this yet. Hope this doesn't happen with the NEW "Spring 1990 Box set" next week !?! As Ralph Kramden would say "What a revolting development this is "

Dead.net should be more forthcoming

While I appreciate the fact that dead.net doesn't want to panic yet and exaggerate the number of shipments that have gone missing, I must agree with Simonrob that describing the number as "several" is an understatement indeed; in my opinion, it verges on the dishonest. In response to greatnorthspecial, these were apparently sent without tracking numbers. In that case, there will be no tracking info at USPS ever. (With tracking, it would be scanned at the outgoing PO and upon arrival for sure, and possibly at points in-between.) And I suspect that without tracking numbers, the USPS investigation will, by necessity, be limited. Why were these sent out without tracking? As we subscribed and paid in advance, shouldn't the shipper do just this much, so we all can at least have some idea where the shipments went missing?

Misery loves company and apparently I have plenty. I was thinking I was the only one that hadn't received DP3. This is the first delay I have experienced through dead.net so I'll take it in stride. Just don't make it a habit. Also you might want to hold off bringing up DP4 if you can't deliver on 3.

If the missing copies of Daves Picks Vol 3 that shipped are gone and never to be seen again courtesy of the usps, I'm curious as to how the limited edition individual numbered sets are tracked, if at all. If they have to remanufacture replacements, will they be numbered? This is an extraordinary circumstance, as I've never had shipping issues with Dead.net, but if it comes down to further delay to remanufacture "X" number of missing copies for a sold out and out of print CD set, what happens from there? Incidently, a friend of mine who lives only a few miles from me, who also preordered the subscription, but opted for express shipping instead of standard like I did, recieved his copy of DaP3 by August 3rd.

I'm not in on the DaP3 debacle (the E72 box did me in), but it's kind of humorous to think that dead.net is a DIRECT MARKETING MAIL ORDER BUSINESS! This is what they do! I do freely admit that 1) it doesn't take too many unhappy customers with unfilled/incorrect orders to make it seem like an epidemic, and 2) MaryE is the only thing holding this process somewhat together (Yeah, Mary!). But one might think at this stage in the game, manufacturing and shipping (not to mention order tracking) would be a little more refined.

I've sent dozens of single CD's with tracking. As I said before, the USPS investigation will be limited without tracking numbers. Dead.net must be more honest with its customers. As wolfmanntim said: "it's not always the crime that gets people upset, but the coverup."

She's not the only one there...

But she does do a superhuman job of keeping the human lines of communication open. One wonders about Dr. Rhino and the rest of the gang with rank running around that place though. I'm glad not to have the mental anguish of wrangling with all of this. Of course NOW Rolling Stone has to come in and say DaP3 is on the charts making everybody dread that their precious 1 in 12,000 copy might be gone. When people were flipping out about getting tickets for The Dead 09 I tried to remind everybody it was all going to be OK. It really will. Just think about how much more satisfying it will be to finally pop it in, set up the zone around the recliner and let the roses fly past! (I know, comparing a limited edition CD to undersold massive venues is bananas to plantains, but you get the idea. It might cost them, but they'll make more)

Dave's Pick's 3...I guess I'm not alone!!!

So, I finally came to look and see if anyone else was missing their Vol. 3. SSIA...I guess I am not alone!!! OK...we'll see.

evry' little thing, gonna be alright..........

my copy of dp3 is elsewhere other than in my player too but, in reality, i've been waiting for 40 yrs and 10 mo. for it so waiting a little longer probably won't be the cause of my demise. I've ordered a lot of items here and this is the first time i've ever had a problem (and it may just be the ole uncle sam snail-mail system itself). I do feel better knowing that they came out on their web site and acknowledged the problem and promised to take care of it, so, in the meantime, mr marley and dead.net will occupy my earspace..............and i'll just "let the roses fly past".........hehe : )

MIA orders?

I hate to make this kind of conjecture but it seems worth considering... Who is working in the shipping department at dead.net, hands-on, putting this one in the mailbox? Who is responsible for deciding not to put a tracking # on these items? Who is pissed off they only make 29k a year with shitty benefits as a shipper with Rhino/Warner? Sincerely hope I'm barking up the wrong tree on this one... For all those blaming the USPS, my experience is the check IS ALWAYS in the mail.

24 days and still waiting! What a Long Strange Trip it's Been?

My copy was supposedly mailed on July 30 - and it just arrived with my morning mail today. FWIW, I'm a "subscriber" - and went with the free standard shipping. So maybe they really are just floating around in the USPS system somewhere. Keep the faith, I guess...

Having followed Mary E's advice and sent Dr. Rhino the order details etc. for DP3, I have subsequently received a mail back. It merely contains the same text as can be seen at the top of this page, albeit slighly personalized. I guess it will take a bit longer to get some meaningful information. I remain optimistic of a good outcome as copies do seem to be arriving slowly at other punters' addresses.

Hell has frozen over in Illinois!Received my cd's in a square box this morning.Also got an e-mail that my Spring 1990 box was shipped yesterday.Hope we all have better results with this release.Actually got a tracking number for this one.What a concept?

I was one of those caught in the delay, but my copy arrived this afternoon. I am a subscriber and had received the 7/30 shipping confirmation. Now I have extra incentive to get my work done today so I can listen!

My Dave's Picks 3 finally arrived today. So hopefully all you fellow Heads out there who have not received it yet will see it soon.

Its been 24 days since notification was received that my order of Dave's Pics Vol. 3 had shipped. Still waiting, unfortunately. I took Marye's recommendation and sent the order information off to Dr. Rhino and was rather surprised to get a phone call yesterday in regards to my order. She acknowledged that there were problems with shipping and that I would be getting my order at some point; she just could not tell me when. Hopefully it will be by the weekend or more phone calls and e-mails will be in order. Seeing that so many have been receiving their orders today, hope once more springs forth. Hopefully I will have the same happy news to report on tomorrow!

It showed up in today's mail. I'm in Colorado, so maybe it'll show up for others soon. I'm just five tracks in to disc one - it's very good.

Amazing release... the mix is so present. Keith just kicks ass. So good to hear him up in the mix. He must have been happier than a frog in plate of warm water to be playing with these guys. His third gig and he is playing his ass off! This thing sounds good man.

I made a call the other day too and the person i talked to couldn't have been nicer. I don't quite understand the lack of a tracking # either..........this is where being older and pleasantly burnt comes in handy though. sometimes i forget i actually ordered something until it shows up and then it's just like your own little birthday gift on any given day. Sweet!!!!! lookin' forward to '71..........sometime.

Where's my copy of DP3?

Not having received Dave's Picks vol. 3, I called 1800CALDEAD tonight & pressed #2 (problem with order) & after a 24 min. wait on hold the line went dead. I called back this time pressing #1 (for new order) & got through after a minute. I was told they were waiting for new copies but I received an email on July 31st that it was shipped? I was told that I would be placed on a priority list & that someone would get back to me within a few days

I just received an e-mail informing me that a few hundred copies have been lost in the mail. Mine happens to be one of them that cannot be tracked down. ( I wonder where they really went? ) Dead. net says that they are going to press a "very limited numbered edition of replacement discs and that shipping will be in mid-October, at least in my case. It will be shipped UPS ground with notification of when it ships. Well, at least I have an idea of what is going on. Disappointed in the delay? Yes. But after a 40 year wait, what is another two months.

I just got my notice about shipping in Oct. Really they lost 2000? something sounds fishy. Bummed We have to wait two more months. Oh wait they will be getting ready to ship DP4 around the same time. Maybe they should offer us a complimentary copy of Daves Picks 4 for our trouble? I think that is a great idea

Like many others, I received my DaP3 in the mail today and it sounds wonderful to my ears...I also got the "Replacements" email today. I know that people who still haven't received theirs are bummed as hell...maybe it will arrive in the mailbox soon. Stuff happens and I am grateful for the nice, albeit a little delayed, promise to replace my discs and offer a full stream. Despite the glitches, I would dare say we are the most fortunate fans in the world - with LMA, dead.net, marye, DL, the community, etc - what a wonderful time to love the dead.

DP3 arrived today!

Today is a good day. DP3 arrived. Finally. There’s no clue on the packaging as to where it had been for over three weeks. It was sent by first-class mail, which should take only three days. I wonder why dead.net places the blame on the US Postal Service. It seems to me that without tracking numbers, they have no way of knowing if the missing/delayed shipments even made its way to the post office. I suspect that their third-party fulfillment center misplaced a truck-full, and didn’t discover their error until the complaints started rolling in, and that’s why they’re beginning to show up now. I’m just speculating, but I think it’s too easy to hold USPS as a scapegoat. I do have to admit though that the fulfillment center did a good job in packaging – a good box and padding. A recommendation to dead.net: In the future, never send anything without a tracking number.

we are the most fortunate fans in the whole world! A tremendous amount of work goes on behind the scenes to give us FREE, wonderful music every mon., wed. and fri. and all of the great music from the "days inbetween" and an incredible forum board too. No other band even remotely goes to the this level for their fans. let's not bite the hand(s) that feeds us so generously for free. We'll all survive this trivial ordeal.
