Dave's Picks Vol. 52: The Downs at Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM (9/11/83)

I remember the venue almost like and old fort with roses everywhere. We came to the site and Wavy Gravy showed us where to camp. Ken Kesey was here as well as a couple other big figures of the counterculture. I think because of Mickey's 40th. During drums a double rainbow appeared. Every time it looked like rain the band would stop and then come back even stronger from their breaks. I saw more outdoor shows in 83 than all the years combined. I have goose bumps even typing this from the memories. - xxuncle johnxx, Dead.net

One of the best memories I have were these 2 shows. During the break there was a lightning storm behind the stage, followed by a rainbow and then an awesome 2nd set. Morning Dew with a Cold Rain, Phil singing encore. Most of my tour buddies went home after Red Rocks and I tortured them with the Santa Fe tapes. Nothing beats the magic of a great GD outdoor show. "It all bleeds into one." - grateful hawaiian, Dead.net

In between sets, I remember it rained... and early on in the second set, there was an amazing rainbow directly over the stage behind the band. I don't believe they saw it, but I'm sure they heard about it. "Let It Grow" was awesome! - Johnny_A, Dead.net

The pot at the end of this rainbow is mighty fine, indeed. Our final Dave's Picks release for 2024 features the complete unreleased show from The Downs at Santa Fe, Sante Fe, NM, 9/11/83 (fun fact, it was Mickey's 40th birthday) with just a squidge of 9/10/83 to round things out. A true trader's treat, this one is solid all around from the lively first set featuring soon-to-be minted 80s classics like "Hell In A Bucket" and "West L.A. Fadeaway" to the return of "Help>Slip>Franklin's," the incredible 2nd set surprise of "Let It Grow," and adventurous takes on "He's Gone,""Wang Dang Doodle," and "Morning Dew." It's all well played, my friend, well played.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 52: SANTA FE, NM 9/11/83 was recorded by Dan Healy and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

I don't think the content of HCS's post are the problem. It's more that the first posts he or she has posted on here have been quite lengthy political diatribes. If the same stuff had been posted by a regular poster on here I think it might have been read more sympathetically than is the case here.
It would be the same with any subject. If someone's first ever posts were quite long ones about hockey or King Gizzard - or Hawkwind for that matter, everyone else might wonder if that person had got lost or something.

So...a belated welcome to HCS - it doesn't matter what your politics are , or mine - the birds the word.

Let me be clear Charlie, talking opposite politics does not make me uncomfortable. What I can't abide is lies, just taking HC Suns last post (the one before the lecture he gave me which I forgot to read), he neglects to mention that A) Millions of votes are still being counted in CA and B) 2020 had the highest turnout of all-time. Trump, had 12M more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016, everything scaled the way it should have. The word for people who believe lies is "Chump" and the word for people who spread lies is "F*ckwad" Not sure which HC Sun is, either way it deserved a response and there is a place named X where all the chumps and f*uckwads gather, not here

I asked you if you would commit to the no TV challenge.

Now you are pleading to the admin to censor me?

But when I say that people of your political persuasion like to censor opposing views, just like they do on TV and SM, you would claim it's not true, even while you yourself are asking for me to be censored.

Irony, and hypocrisy.

I can see now there is no way you could give up your TV for a week.

That's rich coming from a guy who thinks the woman who came in last place in her primary, but was installed as her party's candidate at the last minute because the democratically elected candidate was discovered to be a dementia patient, is somehow legitimate. 🙄

Perfect example of the power of TV brainwashing. Burnsy can't even tell wrong from right, up from down, or legitimately voted for from installed by unelected handlers.

Has it occured to anyone that the dementia patient has not been running the country?

So who has then? Not anyone that was elected into that position. Is it legal for unelected handlers to be making presidential decisions for our country because the "President" has dementia?

And if it wasn't for the debate, where his dementia was on full display on live television, we (and by that I mean, you), wouldn't have even known he has dementia and isn't running the country.

Aren't you even the least bit concerned about this? Or didn't your TV tell you to be concerned, and so you're not.

Maybe it's time to turn the TV off and use your own brains again.

Who the hell is running the country right now?

Everyone ans their brother saw during the debate that Biden has dementia. He can't even walk off stage without his handlers telling him which way to exit, and even then he goes the wrong way, putting his hand out to shake hands with imaginary people who aren't there!

Don't try to pretend it's not true, you know it is! You saw it with your own eyes! But you don't care! Why? Because your TV didn't tell you to care, that's why!

So, who's running the country? Some unelected handlers that are controllig the dementia patient, that's who.

But you're all OK with that, never gave it a second thought, because your TV has you under a spell.

It is THE most egregious betrayal of our democracy ever, and the Left doesn't care, and you don't care, because your TV didn't tell you to care.

Turn the TV off and use your own brains.

.....cmon man. That's all you got?
Do it again.
And mention it again.
Go man go!
Weir all waiting.

Put TV to the side for now. Let's not blame TV. Let's take full responsibility ourselves instead.

So, how is it that YOU have no problem with Biden's unelected handlers making presidential decisions for us?

We all know Biden isn't running the country. We all saw incontrovertible evidence with our own eyes that he has dementia and how he tries to shake hands with imaginary people who are not there.

How is that OK in your book? Do you believe in democracy or don't you?

And you still couldn't answer, even after I removed TV from the equation. You moved the goalposts, not I.

You just can't deal with the truth. It's plain to see and is not lost on anyone viewing this thread.

How are you OK with unelected handlers running the country in lieu of Biden the dementia patient?

It's a very straightforward question. Do you not believe in democracy?

We just showed everyone viewing this thread, now and in the future, how the modern left has no principles and could care less about the truth, much less about democracy.

And this, Vguy, is why you guys lost the election.

I find myself thinking of John Prine - "Blow up your TV, throw away your paper, Go to the country, Plant a little garden, Eat a lot of Peaches, Try and find Jesus on your own". Sage advice is timeless.

Some cool new soul by bands with Thee in the title - Thee Sinseers, Thee Heart Tones, Thee Marloes (soul by way of Indonesia, pretty cool), Thee Sacred Souls. A lot of other cool new soul too, lot's of cool stuff on Daptone Records, Big Crown Records and Colemine Records.

Ghost Funk Orchestra has some cool sounds, good stuff to listen to and wonder why I'm not depressed as I watch a three-decade plus marriage implode around me. I seem to have achieved some sort of accidental equanimity.

Life is full of mysteries. The current mystery confronting me is why a particular bird has been attempting to get through my windows and into my house. For two weeks at least. Every day. Over and over. Fly to the window, try to push through. Sit and stare through the window. Fly to a nearby branch and stare some more. Try another window. Repeat. Over and over. Two weeks straight. Same bird. I'm starting to consider opening the window to let it in just to see what it will do. The cats seem to think it's a good idea to solve the mystery, but I think that they have ulterior motives.

It's strange, but I've noticed that somewhere around 75-80mph whatever music I'm listening to in the car sounds better. The cool thing is that's barely over the speed limit if at all on a lot of MT roads.

I'd suggest everyone watch Network again. That movie is a classic, and freakily prescient. "You have meddled with the primal forces of nature Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!" Great performance by Ned Beatty.

When you complain about billionaires throwing their money into politics, don't forget George Soros, he's been in the game a lot longer than Elon, and unlike Elon he has not advanced space travel by decades for humanity. I mean, holy shit, did you see that rocket come in for a landing and get caught by the giant mechanical arms? To think, for decades, NASA just discarded that stuff. Whatever you think about his politics, he has made giant strides in space travel.

Everyone can take heart that money can't buy an election it appears, because KH spent a cool billion dollars in about 100 days and was unsuccessful, suggesting that money alone is insufficient. We all should have already learned that lesson watching JEB! and his insurmountable war chest go down in flames in 2016 after raising a then insane amount of money and going nowhere in the primary.

Boredom is an odd sort of relaxing, "Oh that magic feeling, Nowhere to go, Nowhere to go..."

Yes, ‘Spanish Pipedream’ by John Prine is a great song. I do wonder if ICE would deport Jesus if they found him?
I agree tha television has a large impact on people’s thinking but I doubt we’d agree on which channels are pushing the most propaganda.

I have been listening to ‘Television, the drug of the nation’ by The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprasy’:

“T.V. is the reason why less than ten percent of our
Nation reads books daily
Why most people think Central America
means Kansas
Socialism means unamerican
and Apartheid is a new headache remedy.
Television, the drug of the nation
Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation.”

More than 30 years old and still relevant.

On another topic. The bird that is trying to get through your window can almost certainly see its own reflection and is trying to drive out what it sees as an intruder into its territory. This also happens with side mirrors on cars. Small birds can spend a lot of time in car parks tapping on the side mirrors!

Morning, rockers! Thank a veteran.............

This is for all of us-----left, center, or right----who buy into their own particular brand of propaganda and misinformation.............

HCS, thanks for the enlightment. I was not aware that DT was going to morph into a mutant hybrid of Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa. I eagerly await the transformation......

Our republic has been damaged before, and it will be again, but it will survive...........

When people in positions of trust mislead us - either recklessly, negligently or intentionally - that impacts the republic............

Think.
Resist.
Rock on!!!

Doc
Let's now return to our regularly scheduled musical content, devoid of politics, religion, and sports. Well, maybe not sports, ice hockey seems to be big around here.........

Stop checking for a day and come back to ten pages of "content"? My comment way back was meant as satire, anyone see SNL? They were not worried about free speech... much. Is all the pus out yet? OK, one quick question, how many other presidents suggested shooting bleach during a pandemic? Some great football yesterday, but let's get back to music and our musical heroes. Almost finished McNallys Long Strange Trip. (The Dead avoided politics for a long time). Much enjoyed the song writing references but curiously found nothing about Mississippi Half Step, admittedly is lightweight on lyrics but so much fun. McNally references Jim Rooney, one of our local grandfathers who will be playing this Friday night at a small local venue. Looking forward to Zach Nugent who will be joined by Sunshine Garcia Becker and Cheryl Rucker for an acoustic GD evening, (so no Wolf appearance though he sometimes gets to borrow it). Enjoy your Veterans Day with some music and thanks for your service.

A long, strange and really good read. If only you could read these books or tell these stories in reverse.. the ending chapters can be a bit depressing and the has such a great start. I guess that's often true with life. I swore I was going to listen to 30 Trips Around the Sun in reverse order, but one close look at 1967 changed all that.

I also liked McNally's "On Highway 61" book. A nice history of where we are and how we got there. Another long, but excellent read.

Yes, I like to read when time arrives regardless of if I watch TV and what channels I choose to watch.

I finally got caught up on at least ripping the glorious GD bounty we have received this year. Getting all the metadata exactly right takes forever.. From one CD to the next the auto created metadata is never exactly perfect. I like all the CD's of a show in the same folder with a song naming convention that is consistent and works. I also like the song descriptions, track number, show name to be organized and consistent. And whoever decided it's a good idea to the word "live" next to each song will never understand this. Probably works for most bands where all you have is one live version and one studio version but not so much with the band beyond description.

Things are exactly perfect now, nothing left to but listen and smile, smile, smile.

Be good folks, be happy not bitter. Be nice and respectful of and to one another. If nothing else, you'll probably live longer and certainly live happier.

,,,, but decided against. I have very strong, VERY STRONG opinions, but this is NOT the place.

As my old man taught me at an early age, Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one,,,, and they all stink.

Listen to the music play.

I listened to a bit of Winterland 73 this weekend. I will never forget some of the early comments on dead.net when this was first released, the one that struck was someone complaining about the sound quality. I dismissed that comment and pure heresy, it sounds great and oh man oh man oh man oh my.. the performances.

I was a bit disappointed not to get a message from BillyTheKidd saying "51 years ago I was at Winterland watching my favorite band. A great time was had by all." I was relieved to read his comments - that at least his brother made it. Also disappointing, I had to read through ten pages of meandering tripe to get there, but hey.. I'll take the win. It did actually make my day his standard, polite and friendly reminder that there is nothing like a grateful dead concert, Winterland 73 being no exception. What a great run and as always, I really wish I was there. Thank god for the tapes and a big shoutout to the genius who decided to hit record.

"OK, one quick question, how many other presidents suggested shooting bleach during a pandemic?"

That's a great question. Thank you for asking. The answer is none, but you also have to remove the word "other" because Trump never suggested that either.

This is a great example of how the media lies and misleads people into repeating those lies, as you just did.

Here is the actual transcript of the briefing in question:

"A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposedly we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. (To Bryan) And I think you said you’re going to test that, too. Sounds interesting, right?

"And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute. That’s pretty powerful."

Do you think he thought this up himself? Very unlikely. He had multiple scientific advisors presenting possible cures. This particular one involved intubation of the lungs to deliver UV light or some other disinfectant directly to the lungs. But you were told he said to "inject bleach" and you ran with it, and are still repeating the lies you were fed.

This media lie you believe is similar to the lies we were told about Hydroxychloroquine. That's another treatment that his doctors and scientific advisors presented to him. The media and their big pharma controllers went on a full crusade to demonize Hydroxychloroquine. Doctors and pharmacists were threatened with the loss of their licenses if they prescribed or provided it to patients.

The media told us Hydroxychloroquine was a "dangerous" drug. But actually, it's safer than aspirin. You can look it up on the WHO's online database of reported adverse drug reactions (ADR) and compare it to how many ADR reports received on other drugs. The WHOs database is called VigiAccess dot org. While you're there you can check how many ADR reports the Covid-19 vaccine has received as well.

Great question, though, thanks!

California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

My time coming any day, don't worry 'bout me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way, and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go

Don't worry 'bout me
Oh, no, no, don't worry 'bout me, no
And I'm in no hurry
Oh, no, no, no, I know where to go

California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

You've all been asleep, you would not believe me
Them voices tellin' me, "You will soon receive me"
Standin' on the beach, the sea will part before me
(Fire wheel burning in the air)
You will follow me and we will ride to glory
(Way up the middle of the air)

And I'll call down thunder and speak the same
And my work fills the sky with flame
And might and glory gonna be my name
And men gonna light my way

Or something.

Lots of great music over the years from all the greats of Blues, Bluegrass,Country and of course Grateful Dead. He is doing a radio show this Saturday from 6 to 9pm Pacific time on KKUP 91.5. FM . You can get it online, if you cant get it on the radio. Its part of a 3 day Grateful Dead marathon.
