We're headed back to that peak with the newly returned tapes from Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, Binghamton, 11/6/77. The Grateful Dead's last touring show of 1977 finds them going for broke, taking chances on fan favorites like "Jack Straw," "Friend Of The Devil," and "The Music Never Stopped," carving out righteous grooves on a one-of-kind "Scarlet>Fire" and a tremendous "Truckin'." An ultra high energy show, with a first set that rivals the second? Not unheard of, but definitely rare. Hear for yourself...

Phish tix in the po'box this p.m.; unlike Lockn where I at least feign roughing it in rolling 4 **** accommodations, I've decided my Outback and bricknmortar lodgings will do just fine on what should be an adventurous run from Hampton to Vegas between 10/19 and Halloween Night in Sin City. I'm only taking one show in Rosemont to facilitate a leisurely slog west, to include a one-night cabin rental in Grand Teton before spending another night in SLC (never visited either!). Near-universal wifi and a mobile workstation have revolutionized my quality of life more than quilted toilet paper, hot water heaters, and Trader Joe's Cookie Butter (though none are indispensable at this point). I've got trail running routes mapped along the way in addition to having identified a couple Y's where I can day pass into lap swimming. Happy.

Technology fosters a certain audiologic pedantry that discounts the practical difficulties of archival transfers. Still, while a bit of the 2-track blues is understandable, Plangent alchemy has affected significant sonic upgrades to existing sources. Portland 74 is a well-known quantity to most, but the Truckin' Jam is a luminescent passage that defies contempt for even acute familiarity. While my favourite GDTRFBs tend to grind like roughly upshifted semi gears in transition from the preceding track, this strong rendition ascends from NFA with deliberate fluidity; also, Keith's bubbly, assertive, sometimes catalystic play makes many first-set standards remarkable. The daughter of the woman who cleans house for me**, age 10, was so entranced by the PNW outer & small wood boxes - suggesting it would make for good jewelry storage - that I gifted it immediately; heck, I was only going to shelve it for the next 50 years (according to actuarial tables), but it's become the center of focus for child - if only for a short bit - who exhibits more enthusiasm than I'll ever muster after unboxing. Still, it's easily the most aesthetically pleasing musical release from top-to-bottom that I've ever seen. Couple disks heading back, but that's been par for the course since the beginning, and I've never had a problem with speedy replacement. **This really isn't saying much in-and-of-itself: in Appalachia, if you've got something then it's implied that you will try to help others, and the most dignified way to do is offering work that you might otherwise undertake yourself. You'd be surprised the difference even a little makes here at altitude. :)

Having never visited, attending any performance at that historically significant venue for the (my) first time would have been cause for a bucketlist deduction, but this was clearly special. Though tired, I returned home to discover that 2018's stellar - and costly - box set run would continue with the wish-list-topping (now that Szell is out) release of BOTT material for Dylan's 14th Bootleg installment. Because the amazon.uk page appears to address a Japanese import edition, I shouldn't imagine that the price quoted for this (purportedly) 6-disc release will be as exorbitant for the conventional Euro & US versions./K https://www.amazon.co.uk/More-Blood-Tracks-Bob-Dylan/dp/B07GVXL5DQ/ref=… Shout out to the old Eleven - I miss you guys! :)

It's that time of the year, been listening to the spring 1990 shows. What a great running start the Dead had with 3/14-3/16, their first night 3/14 may even be the show I listen to the most often. Then 3/15 followed and was/is one of the more interesting/unique shows of the tour, definitely worth releasing on its own as it was. Now today is 3/16 which has one of my favorite first sets, great Bird Song and Blow away ending. Listening to the 2nd set now, Scarlet> Estimated > Ship Of Fools> ManSmart > Reggae/Calypso Jam!

Those photos are consistently the coolest, best unpublished (at least to my general knowledge) I've seen and really enjoy them. Today's listen, don't laugh, "Sweetzerland Manifesto" recently released Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps7qg7FtlDQ It's more adventurous stylistically than the commercial thing, and very well produced and killer for anyone into rock guitar. I'm done, peace. \m/

There are a few interesting jams here along with the group playing some Crosby material. Crosby was supposed to play with the Dead on March 25, 1975, which is the reason for the rehearsal.

March 17, 1968http://www.gratefuldeadoftheday.com/03-17-1968 Carousel Ballroom San Francisco, California This is a fantastic show that, unfortunately, is not on Archive as it had not been in circulation before the Dead pulled it out of the Vault as volume six of their Download Series. There is some great music here, and I recommend giving it a listen if you get the chance. The Download Series Vol. 6 album is available in FLAC and ALAC on nugs.net for $14.99. 3/17/68 Carousel Ballroom - San Francisco, CA While working on the "Fillmore West 1969-The Complete Recordings" box set, we searched every nook and cranny of the vault for interesting contextual items for the release, as well as for material to include on the bonus CD offered with the box set and the 3-CD compilation. The greatest find amongst our many discoveries was this gem of a show, 3/17/68 at the Carousel Ballroom (the Carousel, of course, later became the Fillmore West). If you like Anthem of the Sun and Dick's Picks Vol. 22 (Lake Tahoe 1968), you will positively LOVE this new release. The sound quality is remarkable for its age, with a nice full mix; it has a song list that is exceptional even for this era of preposterously stunning song lists; and the performances match up with, and at times surpass, the much-lauded Tahoe '68 release. Tracks Turn On Your Lovelight (Scott / Malone) That's It For The Other One: Cryptical Envelopment > (Garcia) The Other One > (Weir / Kreutzmann) Cryptical Envelopment (Garcia) New Potato Caboose > (Lesh / Peterson) China Cat Sunflower > (Garcia / Hunter) The Eleven > (Lesh / Hunter) Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) > (Grateful Dead) Feedback Grateful Dead) Musicians Jerry Garcia - lead guitar, vocals Mickey Hart - drums Bill Kreutzmann - drums Phil Lesh - electric bass, vocals Ron "Pigpen" McKernan - organ, harmonica, vocals Bob Weir - rhythm guitar, vocals Credits Recording - Dan Healy Mastering - Jeffrey Norman Notes 3/17/68 Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, CA [Dark Star > Born Cross-Eyed] (first set) Turn On Your Lovelight is the last song from set 1 of the 3/17/68 show. The majority of the songs from set 1 could not be salvaged due to technical problems that were partly due to "sound experiments" conducted on the master tapes during the production of Anthem Of The Sun. That's It For The Other One through to Feedback is the complete second set. http://nugs.net/browse/music/5040/Grateful-Dead-mp3-flac-download-3-17-…

The Grateful Dead played approximately 120 shows in 1968. Of those, only 42 shows (either whole or in part) circulate from the year. With two-thirds of the shows from 1968 lost, it is a melancholy task to list them all, but I thought I’d give it a try: this list will cover the shows and parts of shows we don’t have. Tapes that are incomplete and missing pieces of shows are listed. A few audience tapes survive from 1968; those are only listed here when they’re incomplete. I’ve also noted the few uncirculated tapes that are known to still be in the Vault. The Hartbeats shows and a couple other known Garcia jam sessions are included. Lost songs recalled from deadbase or other sources are listed [in brackets], and useful recollections of the shows are quoted when available. https://deadessays.blogspot.com/2014/09/missing-1968-shows.html

Dead of the Day: March 18, 1967http://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/03-18-1967 Winterland Arena San Francisco, California This night is a quintessential, elemental piece of raw, primal Dead that just cannot be missed. The show opens with a fast and off-kilter Me and My Uncle, only the third one ever played. By the time the band gets into the next tune, though, they have found their feet and begin to really bust it. Throughout the night, the band switches from a pop sound on songs like Next Time You See Me to downright blues on Smokestack Lightnin’ to rock and roll with the likes of Dancin’ in the Streets, which includes a blow-your-socks-off early Dead jam on the backside. There is also more than enough psychedelic sound coming through at different times, pointing in the direction they would be heading down over the next couple years. By the second half of the show, the Dead are absolutely firing. Golden Road is fast and furious. Cream Puff War is transcendent, moving off into some truly mind-altering space. Same Thing comes in as over-the-top Pig blues but then morphs into a trippy, sweet jam with only a hint of the blues remaining. And the Dead just keep driving through to the end or, at least, the cut in Death Don’t Have No Mercy. The whole show makes you appreciate just how powerful the Dead were, even at this early stage.

Thanks all for the '68 info. Hope some more '68 is released down the road. For now, I did find and get the 3/17/68 and 4/17/69 Grateful Dead Downloads. Also dusted off my Two From the Vault CDs and gave them a spin. Truly, that New Potato Caboose is off the charts - as some of you had noted below - total Phil fest, and some of the craziest jamming I've ever heard - psychedelia coming right out of the speakers for sure - can't even imagine what that would have been like to witness back in '68 - still sounds ahead of its time.

Just got the vinyl reissue of Jerry's 1st LP: disappointment! Did a side by side comparison with the original, the "newly remastered from original master tapes", is really no improvement; big difference is huge, distracting bass boost. Anybody knows who remastered it? Anyone else bought it??Was gonna' get Reflections and Cats Under the Stars, but I will stick to the originals.

Digging the excellent "schoolgirl" from the 8/23 > 8/24/68 Shrine Auditorium release (Two From the Vault) and playing along with my just immediately acquired PRS natural semi-hollow. The previous owner upgraded all the electronics, installed Seymour Duncan Alnico II humbuckers in black with matching custom pickguard. I'm stoked... been salivating over the PRS John Mayer Super Eagle model but for a hobbyist/sometime band-jammer forking out the requisite ten grand is not a responsible move. Plus, I beat my guitars up so any notion of reselling is out the window. Just noodling along in middle-pickup bliss, with John Mayer bell-like tone ringing out for days off that center (dual) pickup selection... and finishing off the Jameson from yesterday's celebration. \m/

I have recently ordered DP8 and the Shrine 1967 shows on vinyl, and although neither have arrived yet, I have started looking at what else is available on vinyl. It looks like the only one that is available, that I haven't got on cd, is the Hampton 4th May 1979 show, which looks as though it was a RSD release a few years ago. I have read a few reviews of this show, and they seem a bit mixed. I wondered what people here thought of it. I have got, and rate very highly, the fall-December 1979 shows that have been officially released, and I wondered if this May show was of the same high calibre. If it is-then its definitely one to get, but if not...

From jambase: On October 22, 1967 San Francisco’s Winterland Arena hosted a “Marijuana Defense Benefit” featuring three of the area’s top bands. The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother & The Holding Company all performed at a concert that wound up ending an era for the Dead and beginning a new one. Heads author Jesse Jarnow often provides micro-reviews of Grateful Dead shows, and the recordings of said performances, on Twitter. Jarnow dug into the Dead’s set at the Winterland and shared interesting insight into what went down at Winterland. He notes that the band’s October 22, 1967 performance is the “last document of the Dead as a quintet before Mickey Hart joins as second drummer.” Mickey had famously sat-in with the Grateful Dead at Bill Kreutzmann’s behest on September 30, 1967. While some Deadheads think Hart joined the band immediately, Jarnow’s research has found photos and audio of the Dead continuing on for a short spell as a one-drummer band including the set at the Marijuana Defense Benefit. The Grateful Dead’s set on October 22, 1967 ends with “That’s It For The Other One.” As Jarnow notes, the recording is the first known tape of the celebrated Primal Dead song suite. This early version had different lyrics than what the Dead would go on to record for their sophomore studio album, Anthem Of The Sun shortly thereafter. Jerry Garcia is in fine form throughout the set but especially towards the end of “That’s It For The Other One.” Other highlights include a “Turn On Your Lovelight” workout, Garcia’s solo on the “Morning Dew” opener and “New Potato Caboose,” the lone song played that wouldn’t survive the ’60s in the repertoire.

Time to get a new sofa, it seems. Vguy, I will be in LV in early July (my wife's idea, not mine.) Will I die in the heat? Or should I just swim in the pool all day (with a body suit to prevent sunburn)? I remember 6/25/94...HOTTEST EVER TEMP FOR ME. 116. and the GD show was...subpar, let's say. of course, the next day, after I left LV, they played a "show of the year" caliber show. I was incredibly glad to get back to the Seattle area, with 65 degrees.

Does anyone know when this stanza crept into Fire On The Mountain? I've always known it from The Closing of Winterland version (my first), but I don't hear it on any of the May '77s. Google doesn't know. "Almost ablaze still you don't feel the heat. It takes all you got just to stay on the beat. You say it's a livin', we all gotta eat. But you're here alone, there's no one to compete. If mercy's a business, I wish it for you. More than just ashes when your dreams come true."

I've read that the first time they played that verse was at Giants Stadium on 9/2/78. The Red Rocks show, the one before that where it was played, did not include the second verse. They did include the verse when they played it in Egypt two weeks later.

I always assumed they added the mercy verse based on getting it right for the Shakedown Street album. Sept 78 is the first I have heard it. I always thought it really finished the song in a great way. The music was always great, but that verse made the whole song just that much better. As to ABQ in July, I will be there. When I relocated here I accepted I would never see Dead and Co in State (but hoped that maybe Bobby would play Santa Fe Opera again sometime). Really happy when I saw they would be at Isleta (and got the code for the early purchase tickets). Without the drive up to Boulder, my wife will even join me for this one. Last year convinced a buddy to fly out here and we road tripped it to Boulder. The second night was excellent. Also will trek up to Red Rocks to see Phil in May. The Jerry 75th there last year was a treat.

Not to be persnickety but the FOTM lyrics are not "if mercy is a business, I wish it for you", they are "if Mercy's in business, I wish it for you." May seem small but it chnages the meaning completely. I always thought it was a comment on the dualities of the music business when you become successful enough at a business to have clout/income but comes at the cost of potentially losing tru musical/personal freedom. Those sentiments always came up with the Dead as they got bigger into the 80's especially with Jerry having to carry the weight of the organization. I remember at one point people close to him said he hated being 'that' guy. The one whose shoulders the yoke always fell on, I always got the impression Jerry knew he benefited from the success but certainly found no mercy.
