We're headed back to that peak with the newly returned tapes from Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, Binghamton, 11/6/77. The Grateful Dead's last touring show of 1977 finds them going for broke, taking chances on fan favorites like "Jack Straw," "Friend Of The Devil," and "The Music Never Stopped," carving out righteous grooves on a one-of-kind "Scarlet>Fire" and a tremendous "Truckin'." An ultra high energy show, with a first set that rivals the second? Not unheard of, but definitely rare. Hear for yourself...

DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 25 features liner notes by Rob Bleetstein, photos by Bob Minkin, and original art by our 2018 Dave's Picks Artist-In-Residence Tim McDonagh. As always, it has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually numbered copies*.

I'm only taking one show in Rosemont to facilitate a leisurely slog west, to include a one-night cabin rental in Grand Teton before spending another night in SLC (never visited either!). Near-universal wifi and a mobile workstation have revolutionized my quality of life more than quilted toilet paper, hot water heaters, and Trader Joe's Cookie Butter (though none are indispensable at this point). I've got trail running routes mapped along the way in addition to having identified a couple Y's where I can day pass into lap swimming. Happy.

Technology fosters a certain audiologic pedantry that discounts the practical difficulties of archival transfers. Still, while a bit of the 2-track blues is understandable, Plangent alchemy has affected significant sonic upgrades to existing sources. Portland 74 is a well-known quantity to most, but the Truckin' Jam is a luminescent passage that defies contempt for even acute familiarity. While my favourite GDTRFBs tend to grind like roughly upshifted semi gears in transition from the preceding track, this strong rendition ascends from NFA with deliberate fluidity; also, Keith's bubbly, assertive, sometimes catalystic play makes many first-set standards remarkable. The daughter of the woman who cleans house for me**, age 10, was so entranced by the PNW outer & small wood boxes - suggesting it would make for good jewelry storage - that I gifted it immediately; heck, I was only going to shelve it for the next 50 years (according to actuarial tables), but it's become the center of focus for child - if only for a short bit - who exhibits more enthusiasm than I'll ever muster after unboxing. Still, it's easily the most aesthetically pleasing musical release from top-to-bottom that I've ever seen. Couple disks heading back, but that's been par for the course since the beginning, and I've never had a problem with speedy replacement. **This really isn't saying much in-and-of-itself: in Appalachia, if you've got something then it's implied that you will try to help others, and the most dignified way to do is offering work that you might otherwise undertake yourself. You'd be surprised the difference even a little makes here at altitude. :)

While it's not surprising that tix to the P&F Headcount Benefit Friday at the Apollo tumbled down several echelons of the firm's socioeconomic caste without claim, I still consider their availability a great fortune. Having never visited, attending any performance at that historically significant venue for the (my) first time would have been cause for a bucketlist deduction, but this was clearly special. Though tired, I returned home to discover that 2018's stellar - and costly - box set run would continue with the wish-list-topping (now that Szell is out) release of BOTT material for Dylan's 14th Bootleg installment. Because the amazon.uk page appears to address a Japanese import edition, I shouldn't imagine that the price quoted for this (purportedly) 6-disc release will be as exorbitant for the conventional Euro & US versions./K https://www.amazon.co.uk/More-Blood-Tracks-Bob-Dylan/dp/B07GVXL5DQ/ref=… Shout out to the old Eleven - I miss you guys! :)

"pieface" wrote somewhere else on a Grateful Dead *fan-site*: This show wrapped up the fall East Coast tour of '77 and also concluded three straight nights of stellar shows -- Colgate on Friday (picked as a must have show by the New York Times), Rochester on Saturday (a Dick's Pick) and then Binghamton. It is an incredible show and the best Truckin' I ever saw, but it has its flaws. They lose energy in the Scarlet-Fire transition and the Fire is subpar. The Not Fade Away also loses energy. First set was outstanding, and Bobby opened the second set by saying, "It being Sunday, we're gonna do a little tune of spiritual derivation" before launching into Samson and Delilah. When Jerry was killing it at the end of Wharf Rat, Bobby walked over and whispered to Phil, then signaled the drummers and Keith and Jerry to bring about the return to St. Stephen followed by Truckin'. I've never experienced such collective exhilaration as when they burst into Truckin'. Everywhere you looked, people were dancing in unison, even silhouettes in the exits backlit by the lights in the concessions area. The atmosphere was like the last night of Fare Thee Well -- an arena or stadium crammed with people so happy to just be there. -pieface

All are 3 shows except as noted. 1: Ark Box (4/21-23 1969) 2: Boston Tea Party Box (12/29-31 1969) 3: Fox Box (10/17-19 1972) 4: Chapaign Box (2/21-22 1973) 2 shows - Dick hinted at this one 5: Summer '73 box (5/26, 6/9, 6/10 1973) 6: Summer '73 box #2 (9/7-8 1973) 2 shows - Dick hinted at this one too 7: Boston '76 box (6/9-12 1976) 4 shows 8: Winterland 1977 #2 (3/18-3/20 1977) 9: Summer 1980 (6/19-21 1980) 10: Greek '82 (5/21-23 1982) - I love this run. That's 10 already. Could also add a 1979 and more 80's, wherever the show/recording quality permits, but I'll defer to Spacebro, RV3, 80's Fan (and other 80's fans) to suggest those boxes since they know that era better than I. (Whoops I said "era"... Whoops I said "era" again... Whoops that's 3!) Of course 89-91 are well recorded and many good, consistent runs, so you could invent 6 more in that window and get it up to 20. That's 10 years of boxes... I believe these are all in the vault? What am I overlooking?

....but, I admit, I was rubbing my chin pondering to order the LP version. Then I realized I haven't purchased a record in years. I realize that 180 gram vinyl is awesome as compared to all my 70's-80's records I already own, but I also realize that doing so would end up starting a new habit that would drain my bank account rather quickly. I don't need another one of those. I know me. 21st Century vinyl is expensive....

Big day in the Old Chief's house- today is the day for the first listen of DP 8 vinyl. The wife and kids are gone til tomorrow, so it'll be a day of getting right and getting in an uninterrupted listen to one of my favorite shows. I was a little hesitant at buying this at first- vinyl these days ain't cheap, I know I'll be glad I pulled the trigger on that one. I have the '67 Shrine show on vinyl as well, and I love it. It's still widely available, and if you're into that primal show and you have the funds- I highly recommend it just for Viola Lee Blues if nothing else- and the art for that one is awesome. The only criticism of that release is that they advertised it as limited edition/numbered, but there is no number on the actual product itself- I think it might have been on the plastic wrap if at all. Not a big deal as I'm not planning on selling it but worth mentioning. The RSD release looks amazing, and as long as t-ball doesn't get in the way that morning, I'm hoping to grab that as well. (My bank account will be crying, but I'll be happy- and what's money anyway?) Have a great day all! Happy Listening!

Acid Mothers Temple cut an album with Gong main man Daevid Allen once-although I have never heard it. All the Gong albums made prior to 1975 are essential, though.

Something to enjoy while waiting for jerry pre-order https://themidnightcafe.org/2018/03/10/lossless-bootleg-bonanza-jerry-g… Jerry Garcia Early Garcia Compilation Download: FLAC/MP3 61-07-xx Listed on my tape as Boar’s Head Coffee House, San Carlos, CA Jerry Garcia, Robert Hunter, Rodney Albin, Peter Albin, Marshall Leicester, David Nelson. 01. Banjo Instrumental 02. Poor Ellen Smith 03. Wildwood Flower 04. Brown’s Ferry Blues 05. Jesse James 06. Late Last Night When Willie Came Home 07. All The Good Times Are Past And Gone 08. Darling Corey Deadlists Notes: Jerry Garcia, acoustic guitar; Marshall Leicester, banjo; Robert Hunter, bass?. This performance took place at the Boar’s Head Coffeehouse, located in the upstairs loft of the Carlos Bookstall. Droncit notes: I don’t know what to conclude about the discrepancy in personnel between the two listings. I hear a mandolin on several songs. Especially evident on Brown’s Ferry Blues. There’s an autoharp on Wildwood Flower and ATGTAPAG. Bass is not very prominent but can be heard on most songs if you listen carefully. Poor Ellen has at least 4 instruments: Bass, Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar; others sound as if there are more than three instruments as well. Wildwood Boys 63-02-23 Top of The Tangent Palo Alto, CA Jarry Garcia – guitar, banjo, vocals David Nelson – guitar, mandolin Robert Hunter – guitar Norm Van Mastricht – bass, guitar 1. Rollin’ In My Sweet Babys Arms 2. Jerry’s Breakdown 3. Standing In Need Of Prayer 4. Muleskinner Blues 5. Saturday Night Shuffle 6. Pike County Breakdown 7. Little Sparrow (Come All Ye Fair and Tender Maidens) 8. We Shall Not Be Moved Droncit Notes: Little Sparrow appears to be inspired by the Country Gentlemen’s (1959) version, which they called Little Sparrow, and the Wildwood Boys introduce it as such. My tape had about one minute missing of this song. I used SHNID 4501 as a patch for that part. You will notice it at about 30 seconds into the song, for about one minute. Patch is bassier. There was evidence of cross-fade edits at the beginning of Standing in Need of Prayer, Pike County Breakdown, and Little Sparrow, so there could be material missing, could be spots where the tape was re-ordered, or it could be where the tape was stopped and restarted and the tape recorder rested. I have left it in the order I had it (same order as SHNID 4501), although some of the evidence suggests it may be a re-ordering of songs. Standing in Need of Prayer may be from a different set as the rest, or these may be an amalgamation of material from that night. SINOP has an odd introduction where it is first described as time for a sacred number, and, less than a minute later, Garcia says ‘once again we have a sacred number for you.’ Combined with the cross-fades and other cuts, makes me think this is just a combination of songs from that night in roughly the order they were played. Jerry & Sara Garcia The Tangent Palo Alto, CA 63-05-04 This is not from my cassette. The source for this is SHNID 17914. I reworked it while I was working on the other material. I just corrected the speed. 1. Deep Elem Blues 2. Will the Weaver 3. I Truly Understand 4. All the Good Times are Past and Gone 5. Long Black Veil 6. The Man Who Wrote “Home Sweet Home” Never Was a Married Man 7. Keno the Rent Man 8. Foggy Mountain Top Droncit notes: Deep Elem sounds like Bass, Autoharp and Mandolin or else Guitar, Autoharp and Mandolin. If that’s right, then personnel is not quite accurate. Black Mountain Boys 64-03-06 Palo Alto, CA Top of the Tangent Jerry Garcia – Banjo Eric Thompson – Guitar David Nelson – Mandolin Jim Beamis (Robert Hunter) – Bass 01 Salt Creek 02 Katie Kline 03 Homestead on the Farm (patched) 04 Bare Foot Nellie 05 She’s More to Be Pitied than Scolded 06 They Can Lock Up Me Up For Loving You 07 Somebody Touched Me 08 Who’ll Sing for Me 09 Darling Aller //Lee 10 Set Break Instrumental (“back in 15 minutes”) General notes from the original uploader: Except where noted (i.e., material from other sources), I used a modified Nakamichi BX1 converted for flat transfer for the player; transferred to my Tascam DR-07mkII at 24 bit/96kHz using a flat preamp. Correct EQ applied through Diamond Cut Forensics 9 (alpha). Tracks normalized to -.5 dB. Converted to 16 bit/ 44.1kHz using 32bit interpolation. I obtained the cassettes in the mid-1990s. There were many speed issues across the tapes (the speed problems are also evident in the other sources). Most of these speed problems involved linear and curvilinear speed changes (i.e., the speed was off by different amounts throughout the recording). I corrected these to steady speed (within tolerance for the time of recording). All speeds were corrected with DC8Forensics. I didn’t use any noise reduction on any of it, so some is hissy. There were edits in many places, so these may not be in the order performed, and some songs may be from a different night or different set. I intended to have 62-11-10 as part of this compilation, but my copy is missing some material that is listed on etree. If you have it and are willing to share, please email me at droncit@yahoo.com. I can fix the speed changes, etc. Droncit notes: My tape did not have Homestead on the Farm so it is patched in from shnid 17914. Patch begins at the end of track 2 when they inroduce the song. Noticeable hiss increase. Back to my tape immediately after the clapping ends for HOTF, so intro to Barefoot Nellie and the rest of the show is from my tape.

Have the homestead all to myself as well. Wife's at the mall (which will take her hours), and my son's at rehearsal most of the day. Set the sound system to just the right decibel, put on Dark Star from 8/27/72, and opened the window so the rain falling outside adds that extra bit of ambience...

I have been mainly wading about between 1969 and 1974 this year-especially 1969 and 1972. So I decided to branch out a bit this morning into the post retirement years. And I chose 5/5/77. It immediately struck me what a smooth and excellent sound it has. Nothing is played too fast-or too slow-everything seems to lope along evenly. I have only played the first set so far. Two of the best songs in this set are ones that were much played in 1972-Sugaree and Looks Like Rain. But both versions here are utterly transformed from what I have become used to. The Sugaree is amazing-the highlight of the set-with beautiful long guitar solos from Jerry. Looks Like Rain isn't a favourite of mine-although I do like the 1972 versions with Jerry on pedal steel guitar. But this version is good too. It has lost some of its country flavour, but it is superbly sung-Donna's voice sounds just right, and again it has a top drawer guitar solo. Its interesting though, that the best song of the set ( and possibly the show) is the second one played. Maybe that was a characteristic of the band in 1977- the last Dave Picks was the same -that they peaked earlier than in earlier years.

So this band played at a local restaurant in January and blew my mind. I've been back every Thursday since, and even recorded a few shows. I'll post a Youtube playlist for them below. I highly recommend Boston area folks check these guys out live, and out-of-towners can check the videos - the audio in the recordings is top-notch. The "B3 Kings" is a mostly-instrumental band that doesn't do any Dead tunes - soul/R&B covers and some originals. Format is JUST like Saunders/Garcia "Live at Keystone" (though they do no Saunders/Garcia songs either) with lead guitar and hammond organ trading solos. Guitarist has a wonderful melodic, finesse-y style like Jerry (though none of these guys are Deadheads) and organ player is on a Hammond B3 with full Leslie. The personnel shifts slightly week to week, but ALL these guys are either Berklee professors, Berklee alums, and/or play in nationally touring bands (J. Geils, Ryan Montbleau, etc - they've all been on the SNL stage at some point). The level of musicianship is amazing. They play every Tuesday at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge 10-1am, and Thursdays in Needham at Three Squares restaurant 7-10pm. I go often so if you think you're going, let me know and we'll connect for a brewski. Three Squares is tiny and is usually pretty empty on Thursdays (sleepy suburbs and no one no knows they're' there!). Imagine walking into the Keystone in '73 and sitting down right in front of the band - that's what this feels like to me..... Several of you have the house to yourselves, to blast the Dead while your wives are out shopping with the kids. Yesterday was my wife's shopping day, and she left the kids with me. She came home with a new handbag and a relaxed disposition, as she had hit the salon for a massage and pedicure. Here we are, Sunday, wife is home cleaning, and I'm roped into replacing the bathroom faucet - which she broke cleaning. Listened to DaP 17 last night. Bobby passes on a message to the crowd to stop lighting off fireworks, cause the fire Marshall don't dig it. This show was at Selland Arena - who shoots off fireworks indoors?

May the house soon be ours. I like the idea Skulltrip had (blasting Dark Star with the windows open and the rain coming down). That Selland show is pretty good. Sound quality is one of the best for WoS releases. Jerry seems to be having a night. I think I heard some slide on Row Jimmy that was really fantastic. Also some atypical (and welcome) distortion on some solos (Scarlet Begonias, Jam, One More Saturday Night). And Keith is up in the mix, much better than the DaP 16 / 1973 show that preceded this one in the series.

(perusing my music collection. I have what I need right here). "I'm good. Here's a couple of things I want you to get for me." Wife. "NATHAN! Wanna go to the store?" Son. "OK." Me. "Have fun!" Wife. "Enjoy your Jerry time." (wink) Me. "I love you." Wife. "I love you too." Mission accomplished.....and that how things work.

My getaway from the world is in my car listening to the good old Grateful Dead, Garcia, Weir, etc., and driving along most of the time at a quite loud level. Clean and sober while behind the wheel ALL the time. I'm much more happier and the music is far more intense and the traffic snarls and jams are just like so-what, who cares, nothing to get me angry or frustrated. "Life's Good with the Grateful Dead." Love, Peace and Happiness. Please give us the Fillmore East February 1970 complete recordings box, sometime very soon.

....music definitely trumps asshole drivers. Instead of yelling at them, I just shake my head in disbelief, grinning all the while....

A recent listen on the I-295 in Zoo Joisey (New Jersey) in metro Philly.I really don't care too much for rap *music* but I do respect some of it. Sometime in early 2004, an unreleased Jay-Z recording surfaced where Jay-Z raps over some mostly live Grateful Dead. It's his then-recent "Black Album" he uses. "Jay-Z's Dead" (2004) 01. Spintro - King Solomon's Marbles 02. Encore - Friend of the Devil 03. 99 Problems - Scarlet Begonias 04. Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Fire On The Mountain 05. December 4th - Dark Star 06. What More Can I Say - Shakedown Street 07. My 1st Song - New Minglewood Blues 08. Lucifer - Help On The Way 09. Change Clothes - Slipknot! 10. Interlude - Franklin's Tower 11. Allure - St. Stephen 12. Justify My Thug - Throwing Stones 13. Moment of Clarity - The Music Never Stopped 14. Threat - High Time. Unusual, to say the least. I'm not too sure what shows these songs are from because it's hard to tell with the way the Dead's music has been manipulated. It's rarely played.

When I'm in it I'm fine with the Dead on. To work is about 35 min and home is about 40-50 depending on the day. I'm also fine in Traffic with Traffic on, esp. Low Spark or John Barleycorn. Traffic Live has it's moments. Those 40 min + of Dead in the car are nirvana. I have about 100 Dead cd's just burned into paper slipcases in a shoe box that rides shotgun. All randomly ordered, of course. Show after show. Pure listening bliss... Like now, in my office at home. The kids are up playing in the new bunk bed I put together yesterday (three beers, three hours, Dave's Picks on the whole time). My family lets me get away with playing the Dead here pretty much from when I wake up in the morning until bedtime. Every day. I don't think they even hear it anymore, though sometimes I'll notice one of them grooving. Once in awhile, someone will holler out a non-Dead request. Of course, knowing how good I have it I'll indulge them. This could be anything from Fun Lovin' Criminals to Ray Charles to - gasp! - Journey, but I'll play along for a song or two. Everyone loves The Who and the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and no one listens to rap. I get more of a Jerry tone out of my middle pickup or, on a dual-humbucker guitar, the middle position (both pickups). Just opened up a box from Sweetwater the other day with an Electro Harmonix "Q-tron." Within this box lies the fabled Jerry-tone that sounds like a wah dripping off every note... like on "Estimated Prophet" and tons of late-period work. It's addictive as hell. Recommended for the electric guitarist into the Dead. You'll just stand there endlessly plinking notes, getting your inner Jerry on while the family looks at you like you're crazy. Going outside to play basketball now. Must pause Dave's Picks 2. Happy Sunday everyone. \m/
