With five distinct performances painting the masterpiece of 1978, Betty Cantor-Jackson's always-pristine soundboard recordings, and the "hall-of-fame pedigree" of the Dead's first-ever shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, this is one release that far exceeds excellence in music, sound quality, and rarity.
Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS includes Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO (7/1/78), St. Paul Civic Center, St. Paul, MN (7/3/78), Omaha Civic Auditorium, Omaha, NE (7/5/78), and Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison CO (7/7/78 and 7/8/78) - all of the performances in this collection are drawn from the band’s master soundboard recordings, each newly mastered by Jeffrey Norman. The set also features original artwork by esteemed cartoonist Paul Pope (D.C. and Marvel comics) and in-depth liner notes written by Nick Meriwether (Grateful Dead Archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz), as well as a producer’s note from producer David Lemieux.

Funny, the 7/5 LazyL>Supp. was the one track on that show that seemed to NOT impress me much on first listen. Supplication starts energetically, but kinda turns into a hot mess as Phil's signature lines sometimes don't seem to to fit what the rest of the boys are doing... It almost feels like Supplication is played too fast for that particular song... rushed and frantic by the end - like they're tripping over themselves to get to the finish (they DID end the set after this one so maybe they were in a HURRY to get backstage for some reason...........)
But maybe it didn't grab me (yet) because my fav LL>Supp is the patient 5/22/77 version with Jerry playing deliberate, fat chords with that crystalline tone - I freaking love that version... when Jerry hits the fat chunky chords going into the final vocal on Supp... I'll give it a few more listens to this 7/5 version - see if I warm up to it.
But the 7/5 show overall sounds amazing to me. What an amazing box this is. Thanks Betty. Thanks Dave.
1978
Two of my more favorite releases are from 78 .... DP 18 and the DaP that came out last year from 78 (forget the #). With DP 18 being in my top 3 of all time. So, I was happy to sign up for this box.
However this was the yr I thought I'd scale back my dead purchases ... I have so much dead music it's crazy. Well I can't stop buying these releases .... Is there a support group to help wean me off? My wife can't understand it (but she is a good egg about it).
Side story. I work in burbs. Had to go into Boston for work twice this week. Both days I missed train home by a few seconds and had to take a later train. Man I will never cure that vice of always leaving too late to go somewhere....it's irritating. My poor family have to deal with it too ( and my dead habit).

#5496 has landed here in Woodbury, CT. The container was crushed a bit and so is the box itself and a few of the sleeves inside. The discs look like they're intact though. I feel kinda bad complaining about this since the CD's seem ok. Does anyone have Dr. Rhino's email address?

The sides were crushed... the numer on top is intact but one of the sides of that lid is crushed in. The first 3 shows are fine - the slip cases for the 2 Red Rocks shows are the ones that were damaged.

Wow - this month we got the bookends for 1977 - DaP18 from 1976 and July 1978 boxset. Definitely two different vibes, like the Ying and the Yang of Grateful Dead music.
Loved the mellowness of Orpheum run and the almost slow melodic placement of notes drifting and ebbing thru time.
Contrast that with the powerhouse run of July 78, wow. We are truly lucky fans!
Speaking of music releases, does anyone have any of the 1/2 speed vinyl (45 RPM) of Peter Gabriel's first four solo albums? Was curious if they sounded as good as indicated.
Another new release coming up is the Zappa Road Tapes releases. Is it Gail doing a money grab or is it good material? They've included the caveat like the Dick's Picks, but suspect they might not take the time like Dick, Dave, Jefferey Norman or even Frank took fixing what they could...
One final question, anyone get the Live in Toronto King Crimson release? Having three drummers with full kits up front with the rest of the band was something to see, was just curious if it translated well to CD...
One final tidbit - got a ride from the Airport after my Vegas trip from a friend of my wife who does Uber on the side. I was playing DaP5 for her since she knew I was a deadhead and she liked it. She said she had spotify. I told her she should check out full shows to get the full tapestry vs just the studio albums. Suggested checking out Dick's Picks and Dave's Picks and she was a little horrified because she thought I was saying to check out Dick Pics instead of Dick's Picks - I'm claiming the fifth (or is that 750ml) - it was the day after too much tequila with Vguy72 and I think I was still slurring my words ;) Funny thing that english language...

These shows.. a month and a half short of 38 years. Red Rocks, in particular.. the rest are sort of bonus discs in a way. I didn't bother pulling down the audience tapes, so they are new to me.
Funny story Bob, so the next time your wife sees this friend of yours, she is going to ask about the Dick's Picks you were trying to turn her on to.

Gail passed in October 2015 so I'm pretty sure she isn't grabbing any money from Road Trips 3. I have Road Trips 1&2 and they're pretty Frankin' good. Road Trips 3 is from 1970, a pretty under represented year for official Zappa concert releases.

The box landed in the borderland (US/Mexican)! All I can say is, "Holy Mother of ___" this is awesome!! Listening to the first show now. It sounds ... well, I'll let you make up your own mind!! Thanks a million for those who were involved in this project!!

jrf, you can have mine.. I'm done with it for now. I put it back in the box and sent the horse and driver off that delivered mine, tout de suite.. The horse is well fed, the rider rested and I gave them both a drop of Owsley's finest.

I'm into the second disc of the first show. I have to say, this is about what I expected.. but my expectations were high.
I agree with the previous comment that I am bit psyched about this than 30 trips. Just the right size, price and the quality, including the physical box and sleeves. Practically perfect.

To start, Third: takimoto. Boston burbs, Welcome. perhaps we are neighbors! I hail from slightly West, but inside 95. Barely. However, and interestingly, your other attributes sound eerily reminiscent of my own existence, which I find both humorous and humorous. And convincing. The Family is a tough thing, but we All feel it could just be so easy If Only They Listened! Having good Heads locally MUST be a good thing. I share in your endeavor to spread these truths, All of them.Also, your mention of DP18 set off an alarm in my mind as to its awesomeness as it also sits on a proverbial shelf as a Powerhouse To Be Reckoned With. And Yes, that was a lot of CAPS.
Second (and First, implied): "I'm moving to Australia." - Bobby, 7/8/78. That Estimated. So Nice.
Of course, I couldn't resist, and jumped distinctively to this show; but from the start. And yes it Rocks. And sounds magnificently FIERCE. They were on A Mission.

I was looking for a catchy phrase in old English.. but Shakespeare was never my thing.. so I threw in some French hoping no one would notice.
I think it was Dantian's horse idea, cracked me up so I am getting some mileage with it. Whoever said their box was on Spring Tour has a nice touch too..
I bet we would have been fine without the tracking, and no on the wiser that our boxes were going all over the country.. Dicks Picks never came with tracking, did they?

Don't like the packaging (unhappily familiar with the artist already and sleeves sized wrong for my CD shelves) but that's all going in a closet anyway.
Love the size/cost of the box. Whatever the details of the packaging, 3-5 shows at $80-150 with a decent booklet but no price-inflating "extras" is THE box set format for me!

Box Set Numbers.....
I am wondering what/how the numbers are assigned to each purchase order. I order the box sets, on the first day and is usually very early morning on East Coast. Yet, I always manage to get a really high serial number each time.
My last name, does start with a "W".....
Has anyone else, whose last name is, towards the end of the alphabet, notice the same thing? Or those who have last names with A, B, C, etc notice, if they tend to get lower numbers?
The box set numbers...
are not assigned in any fashion. They probably just print off the shipping labels and hand strips to several people who grab a stack of boxes off the appropriate pallet and slap 'em on. Each box set number is, however, unique.

What a beautiful package and I love the artwork, it feels more "GD" to me than Spring 1977, or either of the 1990 boxes.The problem is the size of the package and it won't fit on either my CD or DVD shelves so it'll go back in the nice shipping carton and be in the storage room by the end of the day, next to the Spring 1977 and 1990 boxes in their shipping boxes.
It ripped without issue and will be made into set long flac suites today so it can be loaded to my walkman and jukebox HD for weekend listening.
Beautiful set but how about some standardized sizing in the packaging. A mere 0.75 inch shorter in width and it would fit on any DVD shelf.
If you slice the shrinkwrap on the bottom seam you can slide the bottom out of the shrinkwrap and get to the CDs and booklet without taking the shrinkwrap off the top cover.
Love The Artwork
The box art is very Dead-like. I like it better than both of the Winterland box sets, as well as the May 1977 box set art. As far as the art style, I like it better than the 2015 Dave's Picks artist, but not quite as much as Tony Millionaire from Dave's Picks 9, 10, 11, & 12. I think I like the design better too. I can actually leave the CDs stored in their cases without ripping the case from extracting the CDs too often. There also is not the issue with scratching the CDs by removing / replacing them inside the cases. All in all, I think they did a great job. I would love to see Roger Dean do the next one....can you imagine his take on the Dead?

In my approaching old age, after every other part of my body has declined and/or failed, I'm hoping that my ears will still function adequately enough for me to continue to enjoy all of these sonic riches with which we've been blessed.
Sort of a 401k for the mind...

I am impressed, however I may be right up there with about that many viewings of TFA. Glad you took your lady along for the ride too. Admittedly, I lost it the first time I saw the movie esp the scene in which your wife references "Ben is a jerk." An understatement. He devastated a good portion of my childhood in one fell swoop! But we will hold out for sweet revenge in Ep VIII...One Can Hope.
But, admittedly, no better way to wait for some good ole GD IMHO. I hope Rox Box arrives for you very soon!

so far, so good
Received yesterday, love the packaging-- including the shipping box. Best shipping box I have ever received. Even the Mrs. liked it. Listened to Arrowhead last night and that is one fine, fine short-ish show played for mostly country fans. That set must have blown some minds. The Terrapin through JBG just rips. Cannot wait to get to the rest.
I have off tomorrow and Friday as the family is moving to a new house. I will be jamming this box hard while packing and moving. Perfect timing really. Stereo is always the last thing packed and this will be the perfect soundtrack for the move.
Last comment-- love that the liner notes include a review for the Omaha show, which confirms Oroboros' account of it raining inside the arena. I am looking forward to hearing that show.

Ha, that Dik Pics is hilarious.
Actually after Gayle Zappa died her son Ahmet is in charge of the estate. He has since banned brother Dweezil as touring "ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA". That's only been going on for 10 years but Dweezil (who is one hot sh*t guitarist) can no longer call it that. I can't seem to wrap my head around that.
I bought the Crimson release Live at the Orpheum which was highlights of a recent show. Very, very, did I mention it's a very heavy sound? the exact opposite of our recent GD Orpheum release. Once in a while I need my senses to be assaulted. A seven headed beast of a lineup for sure. I'm deciding about getting the new one, I believe that is a full show.

Takimoto- Sign me up as well for the support group, but I'll probably be late as well in showing up. I also suffer from tardiness despite the 3 minutes ahead on my watch setting.
Love Jerry- Brilliant call on the Roger Dean idea. There must be enough funds at Rhino to throw his way. Those spacey landscapes are favorites of mine. Last years Yes 72 box was perfect. Without a doubt the GD logos & artwork over the years are the industry standard. It only adds to this collecting obsession to be blown away by cool GD artwork. The Emek boxes were perfect for me & even the about face kill the cartoon artwork of the May 77 box has really grown on me. The E 72 individual shows were spot on with the 5/18 (Happy Anniversary Munich show) & the 4/29 Hamburg being my favorites. Sorry but last years Dave's are my least favorites by far.

Number 00054 loped home yesterday. The WeTransfer scans that deadenergyguide shared yesterday are great for smaller devices, but if anyone would like to see higher-res, color-corrected versions, let me know where to email them at jgs@archstglassinc.com. I have already sent the jpgs to all of you who already requested them. HOWEVER, I have been on the road and may have missed somebody – if you haven't received your scans yet, please let me know.
(I know they're all theoretically identical little clones, but after always getting editions in the last half, if not the very tail end of releases, it was cool to get a double-digit copy. Now onward to the music. . .)

with a colorful shipping container, carefully opened up to reveal a very well designed and very colorful box. I carefully unsealed that and find five just as colorful containers that really could pass for DVD keep-boxes.I flip thru the book and find that's well illustrated with photos, drawings, reproductions of some of the paperwork from these shows. I have already read David Lemieux's "Anything But Safe And Sane" which I like. First up is 7/1/78 Arrowhead, Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic, disc 1. It's a wonderful surprise and a good reason why I went with the box instead of just 7/8/78's 2.2 disc set. This box set package is more happily colorful than 2013's May 1977 box, but the total playing time on this is noticeably shorter than May 1977. I hope this box is nominated for a Grammy and wins it for best packaging.Just reading Lemieux's notes, we really have to give thanks to Rob Eaton, who along with others of Rhino's staffer were able to retrieve the original master recordings.

Bummer about the continuing Zappa family squabble - isn't there enough to go around? Saw ZPZ a few times, once with Bozzio as guest drummer. Saw the Dweez a couple of months back with the Experience Hendrix 2016 tour. He was good, but not flashy like Zack or Kenny Wayne.
I like to check out Project Object too for my Zappa coverband fix.
Going to get that CR full show release, will let you know how it sounds... I hope they mic'd it right to hear the three drummers distinctively and nothing gets muddled together...
