During the mid-1970s, the Grateful Dead saga was unfolding like a Greek classic. The Sisyphean Wall Of Sound had nearly broken the band. From it spawned a Medusa head of countless side projects, all deliciously fruitful but woefully not the same as the whole. The chorus lay in wait, pondering the reemergence of their heroes, and wondering if "THE LAST ONE" had really been it...

But in early 1976, Apollonian light and healing would shine upon our intrepid wanderers once again. No more epic battles for the people with cops and lines and tightness, the Dead would return triumphant in smallness, playing intimate theaters and renting equipment along the way. No more ticket scams and greedy promoters, they'd give back with first ever mail-order ticket program, one that had a few kinks to work out but eventually served the fans well.

Musically, June 1976 signaled a Golden Age of harmony and prosperity for the Dead. It marked an Odysseusian-like return for Mickey Hart. Donna Jean was in lock-step with the sirens' call. Jerry and Bob delivered orphic delight with solo musings like "Mission In The Rain" (the only tour they ever played it on), "The Wheel," and "Cassidy," emboldened by group effort. There was fresh repertoire from Blues For Allah, breathing new life to the Dead's continually morphing sound - as Weir once said of the '76 tour, they wanted to play "a little bit of all of it." Old favorites were re-envisioned with cascading tempos and unique sequencing, making the crowd question if they'd ever heard these songs before. And there was comfort and joy in the familiarity of watching the band make it up as they went along. By all means, it was clear that the bacchanalia of live Dead would reign on.

And now the revelry from this epoch, evidenced by the near-studio quality sound captured on two-track live recordings by Betty Cantor-Jackson, lives on, bolstered by Jeffrey Norman's HDCD mastering. It's housed for posterity in a handsome box featuring original art work by Justin Helton. It’s documented in liners by Jesse Jarnow and photos by Grant Gouldon. And it’s ready for a spot on your shelf.

As part of our pre-order for this Dead.net exclusive boxed set, we'll be delivering downloads of each listening party - one for each show included in JUNE 1976 - to purchasers from now until the March 20th release. Order at any time before release and you'll receive all the listening parties to date.

    Fabulous Shows

I am a relatively new deadhead (5 years or so) and had never really focused on 1976 because in some ways it seemed like it was a warm up for the greatness of 1977. At first listen to the box set, I thought there were some great moments, but it really didn’t change my opinion (I admit likely because of my bias going in). However, I put the June 14 Beacon show in the regular rotation and found myself coming back to it regularly, so I decided to re-listen to the whole set and my goodness, what a great batch of shows this is. Every show is very well played and every night had greatness as well. Several of these shows are in the regular rotation now and even as a newbie, I can see how the band was progressing from these shows, to the early 77 shows (I love the Swing show), which then progress to the spring and fall 77 shows.

Testing with Lossless Audio Checker shows the June 1976 FLAC download in 24/192 format
    ( https://store.dead.net/music/digital/june-1976-flac-192-24-1.html )

and the Pacific Northwest '73-'74- The Complete Recordings FLAC download in 24/192
    ( https://store.dead.net/music/boxed-sets/pacific-northwest-73-74-the-com… ) to be "Upsampled."

I have notified Jeffrey Norman and Rhino. I sent Jeffrey the logs of the LAC test results showing 80% of the June 76 files being upsampled. While he was very nice in his response, he had no explanation for the finding. Rhino has not responded to any e-mails. It is important to note that the files on both test “Clean” after downsampling to 24/96, which, likely, means the files, were originally digitized at 24/96 or digitized at 24/192 and downsampled to 24/96 for mastering. Whatever the case Rhino needs to disclose this fact on their web site or change the files for sale to 24/96.

i just received my copy. it…

i just received my copy. it came in an outer box that had clearly been reused. some of the old labels were torn off, others were partially covered by newer labels. the tape was poorly replaced, but worst of all, the inner box had the cellophane torn and the box was scratched.

i’m so disappointed. for $150 i expect a better product.

these are the first CDs i’ve ordered from this site...if they all come like this, i don’t know that i’ll order again.

i’ve emailed the fulfillment company. hopefully i’ll hear back soon.

    Finally Caved

I ordered this recently, since there are less than 1K to go, and I have to say, I'm really pleased with the appearance of this set. It showed up quickly, having avoided the initial rush to get it, and it's a beautiful package. Sounds good so far. I know I'll get much enjoyment out of these tunes, of course.

For those who wondered about the booklet: this is not a defect. I'm in the publishing business, and I know that most paperbacks these days are what's called "perfect bound," which means the pages are glued in. Open the book completely, crease the spine, and you'll leave a mark; open and close it enough, and the pages will start to fall out.

This booklet is more like a very slim version of an old paperback, where the pages are held by string. That means you can open it up and flip through it many times for years to come, with no worries that the pages will fall out. It's both an aesthetic decision and a practical one. So it may look weird on the spine--it's not a paperback?--but it's a quality move. Very nice, and much appreciated on my end.

Looking forward to cranking up that Crazy Fingers!

Ozone and hydrogen peroxide therapy is snake oil quackery.

Prove to us now that it is not with references to peer-reviewed scientific journals that prove otherwise.

That reminds me of an old Monty Python episode: And now Hitler tells a joke. Does anyone remember that one?

Is MaryE up to bicycle delivery? If we leave it up to the warehouse or UPS, we are flucked.

...and yes, the origin was Monty Python, the greatest joke in the world skit. Hilarious, but in my book the third funniest joke in the world and Hitler was wrong.

Some things in life are bad
They really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best
and
Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle that's the thing
and
Always look on the bright side of life
(Come on)
Always look on the right side of life
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin
Give the audience a grin
Enjoy it, It's your last chance anyhow
So always look on the bright side of death
Before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and deaths a joke, it's true
You see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you
and
Always look on the bright side of life...

DeadVikes, I was thinking of watching The Omega Man myself earlier today - the 1971 film also based on the novel I Am Legend. The later film I Am Legend is cool as well, but you can't beat that 1971 vibe in the Omega Man. Maybe I'll read Earth Abides again. Or The Stand.

I was not expecting to read an Omega Man reference. I have to go back and watch that one. They referred to the night creatures as "TheFamily." Mansonesque? I guess it was.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I didn't mean to suggest that Jerry Lee Lewis actually wrote those songs that both he and the Dead covered. Jerry Lee isn't really known as a songwriter, and most of the songs he cut were written by someone else.

Incidentally, I mentioned waiting for a cd by Lloyd Price in my last post. It occurred to me later that one of his best records was "Stagger Lee", which tells a similar story to the one told in the Dead song, but is otherwise a completely different song. It seems many artists have recorded versions of this tale using different words, melodies and rhythms.

Jimmy, that's a favorite of mine for sure. In fact, I may fire that one up today for some background as I WFH the rest of the week due to....you guessed, it, covid19. Apparently an infected individual came into our office building (not my specific office however) and this prompted a shut down/deep clean. We'll see what Monday brings I suppose.

Bottom line: hunkered down with some GD on the 80-inch while I "check email". At some point past noon, TBD, the IPAs will begin to crack open I suppose.

Be well People!

Do you like anime? I found one of my favs on Hulu last night. Hellsing (the first one). Watched 5 episodes last night. I think the art work is incredible. The way the main character Alucard is drawn in red and black, wow. I love the way it's been dubbed with a Clint Eastwood type voice. If you never seen it I think it's worth a view.

Yes, you can drink beer while viewing :-)

Was way ahead of schedule and had some long overdue videotapes to return, so did a quick detour..... got caught in quarantine at a black market Blockbuster outside of Cumberland....thankfully I have my phone and earbuds with me....now what to play?

Ah, the Skipper is Casey Jones....then something tells me Giligan fucked up somehow? Perhaps he overloaded the firebox since he was all gacked up, witch caused a major power surge on the downslope instead of the up coming upslope like he was supposed to....it finally makes sense now!

EYES VIDEO: nice, but what the hells on the side of Bobbies face? Thought lipstick at first, ya know, New Years kisses etc, but now I’m not sure....hard to see on this iPad?

ABB/DAVEROCK: surprised no one mentioned the Warren/Woody years? Personally I like those as much as any era. Of course I’m biased as that was the lineup I saw most. Highly recommend album Back Where It All Began and the 2 live albums “1st Set”, and 2nd Set”...

As spoken by Todd Snider:

“When I was young I was told that the answer was blowing in the wind. So I listened to the wind. Do you know what the wind told me hippies? The wind didn’t tell me shit!”

Paraphrased to the best of my memory.
I think that it’s from the HWA live album “We’re all in this together”.

Smokin Viola Lee to get things started!

At the end, I think someone says, “I need some coke, nurse”?!?!

Then Jerry says, “there will be a slight pause while our rhythm guitar player takes off his shirt”

Oroborous...ABB - good to read your recommendations, as I have just ordered "2nd Set" ! I am also reminded that it may be time to give Bitches Brew another listen. And 1966...that would be a blast if we had an official release from this year.

I broke my Dead sabbatical by listening to some of 6/22/73 from the box earlier on. It has a beautiful sound, but the first cd is a bit laid back. The music seems to lack a bit of oomph, to me. Maybe because I have been overdosing on 1950s rock n' roll recently. Things pick up nicely on the second cds opening China-Rider though, and the Big River and Tennessee Jed are both sweet enough. I am sure the best is yet to come. I think I am gradually getting my Dead head back on.

....greeting and a grateful eveningbto All.
...who’s wants more acoustic Grateful Dead ?!
I’d love some , thank you kind Sir!
Big news coming down the railRoad tracks...

Just wondering if you listened to the original or extended release? Or (Dr. Evil pinky grin) the DELUXE version that included Tommy? The re-releases clean up the pops nicely, but I begrudge Jon Astley and Pete Townshend for 1) changing the blistering scream on My Generation to a lame Ohhhhh after they opening lyric "People try to put us down"; and 2) burying Pete's "substitute" vocal deep into the mix. To this day I've Incorporated the original version of substitute into my digital library of the deluxe version of rhe album.

Original Live at Leeds My Generation with blistering Daltet scream(it's literally in the first 20 seconds): https://youtu.be/EzK02LDkpIc

Remixed Live at Leeds My Generation which Jon Astley screwed the pooch on (same spot, right after People try to put us down:

https://youtu.be/PoHCjHtHrVo

********************
And now the Substitute blunder. Remix:

https://youtu.be/lc7RcgMfYng

At first listen it may not seem like Townsend is that low in the mix, because you can hear him... But compared to the next link where I posted l the original version , you hear one of the best call and response choruses, and Townsend's voice just shines. This one was difficult to find. I had to pull the full album vinyl rip video. Just fast forward to four minutes and 50 seconds. You of course get Keith Moon's joke about putting the cigarettes out and then they go into substitute. It's only 2 minutes and 10 seconds long. Listen loud. Listen on headphones if you can. Here you have the unneutered Townsend singing Substitute in his prime singin' voice:

https://youtu.be/KiWG11Ldk4Q

Stoltzfus-

If you haven't tried On the Corner you should give it a try. It takes Bitches Brew to the next level, if that is possible. The Complete On the Corner Sessions rank among my very favorite recordings. No matter how often I listen to it something new always emerges.

Stay healthy, All...

Love On The Corner and Bitches Brew, but my go to is Jack Johnson. Of course, it could be my obsession with John McLaughlin....
