This is the third (fourth) time around for this comment (dead.net crashed several time before i was able to save this verion) hopefully, it will go through this time. so...As I was Saying earlier, there is a huge misconception about the term "lossless" as it relates to music. It's not a "format" but a property of copying - either you keep everything (lossless), or you agree to lose some information (lossy). When I send out a wav cd version of music, it's the same as if i sent you the flac version and you converted it to wav yourelf , so the conversation should not be about flac or wav - in thte post cassette world, it doesn't matter. The other thing i wanted to say was that what folks do with the music after it leaves us is up tto them - my job is to initiate - not control what happens later I'm sure there was more i wanted to say, but after having the browsernator crashing three times & trying to re-think what I was trying to say, someone else may have ideas on what i was trying to say or not say. like maybe we need lots of little sailboats vs. a couple of titanics

I was going to start the summer 1981 vine (actually there are some more May shows that I can include also) but it looks like there are a lot of new vines be started up right now and I don't want to flood marye with too much at once. So maybe I'll wait a couple of days, unless of course it doesn't matter? Then I am almost ready to start a Fall 1981 Vine. So I will have a "More May and Summer 1981 Vine" coming really soon and a "Fall 1981 Vine" right on its heels! All in all it will be a pretty good representation of 1981 - One of the best years ever in my opinion! "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. For vines that are ready to go and you want people to start signing up, post over at the New Vines section. I believe Marye's intent is for only "new vines" to be posted there, and for all discussions to occur here.

This is the thread we should use to make it easier on Marye, so that when she goes to the new vines thread she doesn't have to wade through a bunch of posts to find the new vines to be posted. People are still posting comments over there, but not to the same extent, and hopefully soon everyone will know to come here to talk about vining, future vines, etc. Good to have you back, Lopezz!

    A technical request
I have had trouble reading the DVDs in a couple of the recent vines, in particular the SHN/FLAC 1973 and SHN/FLAC 1970 series. After doing some research, I have learned that my DVD drive cannot read DVDs that are burned in UDF format. There are competing DVD formats and the Mac OS has stayed with the old format (ISO, also known as ISO-9660) rather than fully adopting the newer standard (UDF), which Microsoft is behind (shock, amazement!). So DVDs burned in UDF format look blank to the DVD drive on my Mac but can be read by the DVD drive in my laptop from work, which is (of course) a PC. To get around the problem I've been using my work laptop to transfer the FLAC/SHN files to a USB drive, which my Mac can then read. The only alternative is to buy a $50 piece of software that enables the Mac DVD drive to read UDF format, and I am obviously trying to avoid that option. Okay, enough gobbledygook, here's the quick and easy solution, for those willing to accommodate me (and probably, any other Mac users in the Vineyard): when you burn the DVDs, use ISO format instead of UDF format. Everybody's DVD drives can read the ISO format, so it won't cause problems for either the Mac or PC users. From what I've read, the settings on DVD-burning software for the PC are easy to change to ISO format just before a burn. Many thanks, and now back to regular programming . . . ~~~~~~~ "They say Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice"

Did you know that some of the music we've been listening to for a loooong time and love dearly is in need of pitch correction? "Layla", "Europe '72" and "Kind of Blue". (Actually, "Kind of Blue" was pitch corrected in the early '90's. They had to use a back-up machine to record the first few numbers and it was running hot so they finally fixed them). But wouldn't it be cool if Sr. Miller were to work for the Dead in an official capacity? " Where does the time go? "

Is there interest in a best of JGB 76 vine? I'd do it in parts, probably 2 (have gone through half the shows and have enough for a part 1 so far). It would be SHN/FLAC and WAV, with me converting and burning 1 show and each of the first 3 people to sign up converting and burning a show each. I hope there is interest as there are some pretty hot shows.

all you folks out there with some large collections, do you think we could see some 1981? There really isn't much still circulating here in the yard, and I just came across a couple high-energy shows from the spring '81 tour. ( I would like to get them out there in the yard, but need to check the Vinedex.)Just a thought if anyone out there has some, I'm for sure one interested person, either for vine or trade.....

Well, since you asked, here are the early 81 shows, and sources, that I would LOVE to see vined: If you can pick only 8: 3/9 Miller SBD 3/10 rolfe.miller.95276 and the set2 SBD 3/20 vernon,9198 3/21 sbd.clugston.6666 3/23 weiskircher.32145 3/24 weiskircher-vernon.10308 5/1 sbd.hinko.29087 5/5 mow.ford.28356 If you can do 8 more: 3/5 either the Wise or GEMS AUD and the set2 SBD 3/6 either the Wise or GEMS AUD and the set2 SBD 3/12 rolfe.miller.95259 3/13 wagner.miller.90455 3/14 rolfe.miller.95288 5/2 sbd.miller.30152 5/4 milner.ford.90454 5/17 either the Munder or mow.ford AUD These are all shows that I do not have. I selected the sources after taking a quick listen to various sources on archive. 81 isn't the best year for SBDs (I thought some of the AUDs definitely sounded better) but I went with the Miller SBD when available. Thanks guys if you have these shows and vine them, even if they aren't my preferred source (it was cursory research so I could be wrong, here and there at least) :)

From your list I have: 3/9 sbd.miller 3/13 all.aud.rolfe and a sbd for set 2 3/20 GEMS.sbd 5/1 sbd.miller And Maustin - I have started a few 81 vines (like 3 maybe?) in the past. Do you know if they are stalled or not? I guess I can do some searching and check on their status. I also have a bunch of stuff from the fall. Sounds good, jsfc. The 5/1 Miller is a remaster of the SBD I listed (I linked through deadlists, which doesn't list the Miller source for that show, rather than search on archive, that's why I missed that one). I thought the Vernon AUD sounded better for 3/20 but the SBD is fine too. I have 17 SHN/FLAC '81 shows, plus a few more from Oct that I haven't gotten to yet (probably from jsfc). Considering that I still have in my queue to listen to those fall 81 shows, 20 shows just acquired from unclejon (mostly 83 and 85), 15 more JGB 76 shows, all the 81 JGB on jsfc's vine, about 10 '90 shows from rmb, and, oh, probably another 40 shows (68, 70, 71), I cannot possibly recommend that we pool our resources and do a huge everything from 81 vine. Or can I?

The following vines stalled with carolina boy-3-28-81 cole field house both died this spring the following vines died with deadhead33- pomo's 197 vine (after the 5th person) fall downunder vine both died in sept. I agree with dstache, I would really love to see this complete year, but I would settle for whatever people are willing to share....thanks and let me know what I can do to help the cause

I will send out the private PM note Wednesday morning. If for some reason, I missed including you, PM me to find out what's going on. Again, I will only be contacting the core vineyard group here. Haha, lots of luck involved. I thought the Dark Star was from '69 (the "crank" or washboard noise or whatever that is, plus the length of the song) then looked on deadlists for Dark Stars from that year that were the same, or close, length. Today's Althea was tougher because it wasn't clear, to me at least, what year it was from. I initially thought 80 or 81, but then added 79 and 82 too. Should have stuck with my initial instinct. Then, deadlists does not always list the length of each song during that time period. 3/14/81 is one of the shows the length of songs is not listed. So, really tough. I did figure it out but took longer today. And I didn't try to enter of course (very happy to have won once). Still waiting for the confirmation email, though. 3/14/81 does not circulate on SBD, and the Althea sounds great and the show is rated highly on archive, so it would make a GREAT release! Of course, that '69 show would be GREAT too!!!!

I will be adding to Dan's list too. I am in middle of late 78 and enjoyed a nice AUD fo 11/13 so I will include it. I don't want to give too much of this era though. I tried again today, for fun, not to win for myself (I MAY have been trying to help one of our friends here). I had it down to 4 shows, 7/19/74, 5/13/73, 10/2/72 and 10/9/72, but it took an hour to get to that point, and I would have gone with 10/2/72, which I now think is incorrect (5/13/73 seems the better answer). I'll do better, I promise!

Something wierd is going on. I know the site was down for some maintenance yesterday, and I had an awful time even accessing this site at times. Today when I went to log in, there are user names appearing in my log-in box. I have seen "raymart84santos" and "chrisjegg3" appearing in my log-in user name box. Above it, it says "Sorry, unrecognized username or password." In fact the there is this message.. "You previously logged in to Dead.net and checked the "Remember me" box. At that time, a login cookie was set on your browser that it uses identify you each time you return. However, the login cookie that your browser just provided doesn't match the one it previously set." The ONLY way to log in and bypass this is to click the middle tab at the top "Log in" which clears this error out and then you can log on. I wonder if the site has been hacked. Also, it took me about 4 attempts to log in for it to work.
