Thanks for the explanation from us less technically knowledgeable souls. Does the same thing happen each time you save or copy a .wav file? From what I can gather from this topic, the answer would be no. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. A few weeks ago I tried converting an mp3 to wav just to see what would happen and the file ended up being a cda file when it was all said and done. cda files are the format you get if you buy a CD from the store. So I thought that was weird. I don't care that much as I would never convert mp3 to wav or flac anyways but I just wanted to understand it better... "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. flac vs mp3
A lot of you probably do not use audio editing software, but Mp3's are pretty much useless in that area. When I open a 50mb flac format song in Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition, it uncompresses to almost a gigabyte. Thats just one 10min song. I use this to get rid of tape hiss, or try and smooth over a tape flip. When I save the flac file in flac format it does not lose any information. I can open it and save it as often as I like and the information remains. Mp3's on the other hand will lose a little information every time I save them. For example, If the song were a painting: Compressing it in flac format would be like rolling it up and putting it in a tube. It would look the same the next time you open it. Compressing it in Mp3 format would be like folding it up and putting it in your pocket. Each time you opened it and put it away the folds and creases would get worse. A tale tell sign of an Mp3 in this condition is when no matter how loud you turn the voice and lead guitar sound muffeled. If you like Mp3's, cool. I use them in my Zen player and my wifes ipod. I dont see anything wrong with a Mp3 vine either. I sent That Nice Hippy Guy a Sublime concert in Mp3 format. It sounded pretty good! But please dont encode Mp3 back to flac. They will get mistaken for the real thing if the recipients of the file do not have the software to distinguish between the two. Thanks( I guess thats my 2 cents)

That's exactly what I do too. With a few CDs sprinkled in for good measure. I haven't found a way to flawlessly listen to my ipod in the car yet so that's where CDs are nice. but has anyone tested it? Just take take two cds, both with the same jam...one in mp3 format, one lossless (don't label which is which)...mix em up....and of course listen on the same speakers to control the experiment......after the fact write your guess as to which is which and see if u can tell a difference....I have not done this test myself but my theory is there would be no discernable difference between the two. That being said, I keep my shows in Lossless format on my external hard drive for archiving and compress to mp3 for personal use. "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Well, you have heard of lossless; MP3 is loss. If you convert the same audio file to wav and MP3, the MP3 file is smaller, and the bit rate is smaller too. Does it really matter? No. Does an MP3 sound good? Yes. But purists do not like MP3 because it does have subtle audio differences. Think of an MP3 as a second or third generation tape.

What exactly gets "lost" when converting to MP3?? I'm with some of you guys - I think MP3's on an ipod sound awesome. I haven't been able to figure out what I'm "missing" with an MP3?? Yeah man, I dig mp3 too...I generally convert all of my lossless to mp3 (and keep the shnflac on an external hard drive) Mp3's are smokin.... I can groove for hours on end with no break of the vibe....put in a fatty mp3 disc and call it a day!!! I love it!!! (plus I cannot tell a difference on my car stereo or home stereo for that matter...with most shows)BUT....I still keep my Lossless archive for future listening/conversions when mp3's are obsolete....shnflac or lossless allows your collection to last the test of time....and we all need something 'built to last' "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. I too remember the not so distant days of trading tapes. mp3 at a decent bit rate puts me right where I need to be. Even when listening on headphones at high volume, every instrument is clear and crispy. I'll leave the archiving to the archivists, I want to listen. the 120gb of live Dead on my iPod keeps me groovin' down the road His job is to shed light, not to master...

Good morning everybody. I got the urgent message in my inbox to get over here. I have a lot of reading and catching up to do. I will say this, with all the new vines being proposed, I feel like I am drowning. There is SO MUCH stuff to keep track of. Thanks for all your efforts. I wish I had more to contribute.

I will always be up for seeding some Talking Heads! I still have these shows and some great new stuff too. The old vine was intended for the cd crowd. Now that there are more people trading in flac I will pick the two best shows to burn on cds and have the rest in flac.

Looks like mdecicco1 is holding up a few of the 1973 vines (and for months, not just a week ro two). I advise against sending him anything else until he gets those vines moving again. If I have to reseed one of the three vines, that is fine, but I am not going to seed all three. A little help will be needed from other viners to reseed if mdecicco1 has disappeared.

Next vine will consist of 4 of the unvined shows from January 1978. Rick sent me the month and I am in the process of converting and listening to the shows I didn't already have (plus I will convert and listen to a show I had already, and LOVE, one of my all time fav shows, 1/31). 1/10 and 1/11, both very good shows, will be included. The 4th show will remain a secret until the vine is unleashed. Let me tell you, I was BLOWN away by it. If you are into, or at least don't mind, straight up rock n roll Grateful Dead, you will be blown away too. The Best of '79 series will continue. I finished listening to the spring shows and have 2 that I think are worthy of inclusion in this illustrious series. I am taking a little break from 79 and will wait until I listen to the summer shows before vining the next part. Give me a month or so for the next part. Rick also sent me the '80 acoustic sets from Radio City. If anyone has the acoustic sets from the Warfield or Louisiana, let me know and we can vine the whole shebang.

The acoustic radio city vine sounds awesome. I have the acoustic warfield sets from 10/2 and 10/11 which I belive I got from vines on here. I'd love to have the electric sets from those shows also, so let me know if you can get ahold of them. Thanks for all you do here! There are a lot of different vines here and they are usually in North America (and they are not in Eurovines topic). It takes too long to wait them in Europe and to send them overseas and back again and again... It would be better to re-seed vines for European Deadheads separate from North America. Lets think how to do it. Maybe first person from Europe must re-seed it or there must be the other way to do it.

there were indeed a bunch of eurovines and indeed quite a few vines in the US have been started from Europe, but I think most folks in Europe get their Dead from the well known places where it can be found online and so don't vine so much. Kind folks in the USA do send vines to Europe if you ask. Some will make new copies for reseeding here (you can then offer it on the Eurovines forum). Or if a vine seems to have reached the end of the line in the US, then the time to send it over the water and back is not really an issue and so you could sign up. So I suggest you PM the holders of the vines you like and ask them if they can help. More than one has helped me in this way. If you are desperate for any particular shows from the 60s and 70s you can PM me too.... you are in Belarus if I remember correctly . I am sure that folks would be happy to help out a Deadhead over there. I am often in Ukraine and Russia but have not yet visited Belarus..if I do I will bring you a stack of DVDs! .( I am writing from the Sykvitkar in the Komi Republic in Russia right now!)

I am still here. The vine traffic has slowed down. Is there something in the water here at deadnet? Mind you, I'm just minding my own business and not bothering anyone or looking for trouble. :0) In the last 2 days, I have received hate mail regarding my political philosophies and love letters. Hope everyone has a great holiday season. "I do believe in spooks, I do believe in spooks, I do, I do, I do, I do, I do"--Lion Wizard of Oz

It probably was not really "hate mail." :-) It was just like I have no business being here at deadnet since my philosophies go against everything the Dead stands (stood) for. :-) "I do believe in spooks, I do believe in spooks, I do, I do, I do, I do, I do"--Lion Wizard of Oz

I hate to bring this up again but be on the lookout for mail in your PM box from gloryph. He/she does not accept private PMs (how convenient) but only wants to communicate by e-mail (now that's a red flag). They just joined (another red flag), and the message sent to me appears to be a generic "love letter" message. I googled this, and low and behold quite a few folks have received gloryph's exact same message on other unrelated forums (flashing red lights). I suspect that gloryph has targeted other folks here at deadnet. I am not sure what the motive is (friendship...etc) but after discovering this, I decided to put out an all points bulletin. EDAD

I didn't know where to post this, but since the vineyard is like my home away from home, I figured this was as good a place as any. I just thought that was cool. "That path is for, your steps alone."

If you ever listen to a game he works on tv, he is constantly dropping allusions to the Dead and to specific songs.... A few weeks ago on the occasion of John Wooden's 99th birthday, (the legendary coach of the UCLA Bruins), he called Wooden a "Saint of Circumstance" among other references. From this basketball fan's perspective however.... I think sometimes a little Dead-air would do him good! The man rambles! Finally.... met him outside the Spectrum one night.... he was getting out of a Lincoln and sneaking into a side door about 30 minutes prior to the show.... stopped briefly and chatted.... was a nice experience. Thanks. Raymond

Well, maybe a positive sign. For all you "Facebooker's" out there you might get this more then others. I sent a Mark G. Stanfield in Louisville, KY a "Friend request" 6-8 months ago. He never accepted it, but in looking at my "live feed" (sorta like the Twitter aspect of Facebook) he posted "Mark G. Stanfield joined the group An Arbitrary Number of People Demanding That Some Sort Of Action Be Taken. I don't know why he showed up on my live feed, but it sounds like it could be him.
