The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Been on a Dead & Co. listening binge for a day now. Damn, when I'm in the right frame of mind to accept it it's such beautiful stuff... Chimenti and Oteil are virtuosos who never show off, because that would be beneath them. Bob has aged wonderfully, his voice deepened both in range and character. I love him. He carries forward the torch, Jerry's little brother. The drummers, crazy fucks, will probably be the last to die of all the original guys. Like Keith Richards and cockroaches, some things just cannot be killed. John was such the right guy to carry this forward. He has put his whole soul into it and he knows how blessed he is - this is his redemption. He sings better than ever and has such a reverence for this music, yet he's becoming more comfortable stretching out, finding himself in these songs. Love his Friend of the Devil and Brown-Eyed Women. And, of course, his kick-ass guitar playing. When he's on and wailing he holds his own across the board. I love that PRS Super Eagle, it's my dream guitar. Warning: shameless plug forthcoming. https://prsguitars.com/supereagle2/ \m/

Dude, where is my car. Never had that problem leaving a show. Although now I have that experience when I leave a convenience store and the car is right there. I was busy and did not get to post on the anniversary of 1987-03-22, Hampton. I previously posted several times about that show. Once I posted about pulling into the parking lot and parking way out, closer to the entrance than the Shakedown. I was rolling one when a Virginia state police pulled up behind us. Quickly stuff the bag in my pants and got out. State police looked at me and shook his head. I knew it was because we were from so far away. Look down, and the dang baggie is hanging out of my pocket. Anyone that knows Virginia knows that officer was way more gracious than normal, way more. I also posted once about how when we got back to the hotel at about 2am or so, the Exorcist was starting so we watched that while we were way beyond dosed. Once I posted about the amount of energy in the building that night. It was Jerry alive and back on the East coast again. Just crowd in full on joy and energy that even got more crazy the next night. But where is my car nah. How about where is my hotel. We normally stayed at the Strawberry Banks when in Hampton or right down street from the coliseum at the Days Inn I think. This night for one night we had a room further north than the Strawberry Banks. We left knowing where we were. But coming back, we got lost. Lost in a circle. We knew the hotel was right there. We would get off of the interstate could not find and then go back down the interstate, turn around and try again. We made this 5-7 mile circle 5 or 6 times before we finally found the hotel. It was right where we left it. Thing is, there was a hill there and when we got off of the interstate we werent driving far enough to top the hill and see the hotel. Now this is what is weird, we were so relieved to find the hotel, the Exorcist was a piece of cake. Ahhh good times, well except the panic of being in that circle...

....how about finding the keys to the car? I think i've told this story before, but its pretty funny. Me and three other friends drove up to see the Monterey shows in '88. After the shows, we were packing up the tents, etc, getting ready to walk back to where we parked the car in the lot. Couldn't find the keys. Panic ensued. Spent a couple hours scouring the camping area and personal belongings to no avail. We asked each other when the last time anyone saw them. Shrugged shoulders all around. Security starting moving towards up to tell us we had to leave. Major panic attack. My buddy the sheepishly held them out in his hand. "Where where they!?!" "In my back pocket." ....

The circulating copies of the Betty from the storage locker all had the beginning of Jack Straw cut.The assumption is that it’s cut on the master Betty (although someone could have introduced that cut to keep their copy of the Betty the only good one). A year ago or more on the GSTL board some comments were posted regarding this cut and how it would be handled for the official release. It would be great if the Betty didn’t actually have the cut. I guess the only way to tell is to compare an AUD recording to the GSTL copy.

Isnt Buckingham coming back next year? I thought he said something like he was not prepared or capable to tour right now, but not for ever. Hope that shines light that they are planning more big things as they have gotten older, probably less partying, and nothing left to do but smile and work. Anyone ever heard the live Buckingham Nicks album from 1974, Birmingham? I heard it on bootleg wow 34 years ago maybe. May have to order it, it is quite good. https://manassas31retrocd.com/products/buckingham-nicks-live-in-alabama… Didnt even know you could just buy it now. They were extremely popular in Bham at the time, seems like they sold out the Boutwell Auditorium.

When the news first broke, I heard the source of the calamity was scheduling.. that they had this window to do the tour and he wasn't committing to those dates. So considering the stakes and the scratch involved.. they decided to tour without him. Who knows for sure, I bet it is more complex and I bet there is emotional content as well.. But your story overlaps with what I heard through the grapevine. All we know for sure is that he is out for now. Anyway.. I broke down and bought one (for now) ticket for Dead & Company.. Blossom, one of the finer summer swinging sheds. Try as I might.. I couldn't miss this summer completely.

Jim, I am sure you are correct. Somehow my dumba$$ always forgets the extreme emotional component of that band. I still do not know how they could go through so much. I guess really hard drugs do numb the pain. Anybody got some?

I wrote a couple years back that one of my interests that relates to music is "the gathering place of the crowd." Have also had a couple of side chats about it. That means I enjoy researching and reading and looking at old pics or footage of various theaters, arenas, coliseums, stadiums, etc. Blossom is one theater that I have researched several times. Always fascinated by its design; this started after the 85 show.

dmcvt; wow, not sure I’ve seen Link Wray before, rocking, thanks! Elvis: another great clip, pretty sure that’s Mr. Tutt, looks like em anyway. Probably my favorite Jerry Drummer.. Burning & Looting; Burn baby burn, Disco inferno, burn the mother down! NK box connection; ok, shhhhh, have from a deep but reliable source that yes Dave was actually how we got those three lads back from lil Kim....details still murky but there was some kind of exchange and something about lil Kim needs Dave to get him up to speed on the tunes etc, so he can bring the train over and go on summer D&C tour! I guess he got turned on to the festival express vid and it blew his mind.......so he’s wants to try for his own train tour... Better watch your speed!!! The question is, how will this effect the release schedule? Thin; that was not a negative comment, that was critical empirical evaluation, ahem, weeeellll yessss. As far as the rope, just as long as it’s quick and painless. I here there’s an awesome jam going on over there.... It’s BaaaaAaacccccoooon!: 7 pieces, as in the next box will have 7 pig tunes????? How about a pig box, complete with the demos of what’s available from that album he was working on... Scandal; lastly, anyone seen that bit in RS about the upcoming dead book (Fare Thee Well) that sounds like someone is going to shit talk and well, talk about stuff some of us have unfortunately already sorta knew...... Understand he only got to interview Mick and Bobby, just hope it’s somewhat factual and not just a big cash in. It would be a shame if Camelot was tarnished just for silver....

That's exactly what I said. The The Other One from Concertgebouw on 5/10/72 is zambezi good. The Dark Star from Rotterdam 5/11/72 is zamboni good. I think Dave's rant when E72 came out was that he was considering several mini box sets, The Netherlands being one of them. Part of me thinks that is the natural way they should have been released.. a Paris Box, an Amsterdam Box, a London Box, an England Box, etc.. but I'm content they decided to just main line us the whole tour in one giant box.. I think it was Chis Grand who used to post here a bit that first spoke of the elegance of the 5/10 Other One. I agree and couldn't have said it better myself. It's a masterpiece.

I think it was Sixtus that sent me the free stream link to the first D&C Mexico show on Cinco De Maya. I watched it (2/15) .. then went back and played just the Playing in the Band opener and hit pause and went to bed. It was still working tonight. nugs.tv/free I bet they keep it up until they live stream it tomorrow night. And apparently tomorrow and Saturday they are pay streaming rebroadcasts of 2/15 and 2/17. You can get a package deal for both shows. If I were to steer or recommend.. get both shows and watch them. It will be worth the price just to watch Oteil sing Comes a Time (second night). The rest is superfluous, a bonus. They did a nice video homage to John Perry Barlow on the first night (who had recently passed at the time). Here are the setlists.. If you have a nice, accommodating system, give it a try. Oh.. and Jeff rocks. 2/15/2018 Barceló, Riviera Maya, Mexico Set 1: Playing in the Band Me and My Uncle He's Gone Cassidy Brown-Eyed Women Bertha Good Lovin' La bamba Set 2: Scarlet Begonias Fire on the Mountain Althea Estimated Prophet Eyes of the World Drums Space Looks Like Rain I Need a Miracle Casey Jones Encore: The Weight 2/17/2018 Barceló, Riviera Maya, Mexico Set 1: Shakedown Street Cold Rain and Snow Loser Jack Straw Easy Wind Tennessee Jed Sugaree Ripple Set 2: Viola Lee Blues China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Comes a Time Deal Drums Space Standing on the Moon The Wheel Sugar Magnolia Encore: One More Saturday Night

The Red Wings bus broke down on the way to the playoffs. Everybody needs to rebuild at some point. Red Wings made the playoffs 25 years in a row and won 4 Cups during that time. The Vguy Knights have won 0 Cups. Don’t get too cocky with your beginners luck. Although, the whole city of Vegas is based on luck..... Also, yelling ‘Knights’ during the word ‘night’ of the national anthem was invented a few decades ago in Atlanta for the minor league Knights there. Copycats.....

Yup. The Red Wings are my team and they have been spotted on various golf courses throughout the greater Detroit metropolitan area recently. However, as a newcomer to the sport, I will convey some of the established bylaws of hockey. 1. When your team fails to make the playoffs, you are allowed to adopt another team. Provided that the selection is made prior to the start of the playoffs and that said team is not an arch rival. Or pittsburgh. 2. Hockey geography dictates that the only truly acceptable teams in the NHL reside in Canadaland, east of the Mississippi river and north of the Mason Dixson line. The lone exception being the penguins, which despite the league's effort to promote them, are universally hated outside of their own city. Any teams falling outside of these boundries will be tolerated, but never fully accepted as a true NHL team. 3. No team in their first year will ever be allowed to win the Stanley Cup. Too much too fast, as someone once said.

Okay I'm a day behind can, but hippie chick, to answer your question about Keith on Bertha, no I've never heard of him sitting out on songs, nor playing the organ in 1972. He did play a little bit of organ in late 71 after he joined. I believe there are some tracks on Dave's Picks Volume 3, Earthquake in the Phil Zone. What I found while working on my Ph.D in Europe 72, is that Keith was not always Audible in the mix. On some shows he's very much present, in other shows you wonder if he's even in the band. It's a tragedy, I know. It was long rumored that Jeffrey Norman was rushed to engineer this box set. Sure enough, a couple of years ago, the great mr. Norman himself came to this very message board to discuss some comments that have been made about what many thought was a significant Improvement in the sound quality of the Dave's Picks releases. He thanked everyone for their feedback, and it was in that Exchange that somebody one man in particular, asked him about whether he would want to have a do-over with the master tapes of Europe 72. Mr Norman said yes he would love to. I took that to mean that he acknowledges some inadequacies. It is also very obvious to me that the liner notes 4 the April 24th show deliberately talk up Keith God shows contribution to this particular show. And the history of course, is that this show was engineered and released years before the year of 72 box set, and that's the mix that they used. So, what I clean from all this is that he had plenty of time to get Rockin the rhein just exactly perfect, Keith is high in the mix, and this is the mix that they used for Europe 72 box set at least 4 the part of the show that includes Dark Star and sugar magnolia I've compared those side by side and with the exception of slightly different placements of the track markers, there's no difference in the audio. I know of one man who did a little more analysis and determined that part of that show was remixed for Europe 72. But my point is, and I apologize that I'm taking such a long time to get to it, but I'm driving right now, is that they know that Keith is low in a lot of these mixes, so they talked up the show where he was best represented add an audio level, which is April 24th. That is plenty of Babel from me. Good day sir! Or I'm sorry ma'am. The hair under the arms distracted me a moment. Not that it's a bad thing. You wear it well:D One pleasant anomaly about this May 10th show at 420 Amsterdam Street, is that there is extra reverb, which sounds good. Not so much on the vocals but definitely on the guitars.

Ha, I remember that hockey/dead shirt too! I think my favorite one however was the Space Your Face shirt (think I even still have it somewhere)...which I'd post if I remembered how to do it... Speaking of Hockey, I'm a flyers fan so not much to root for right now. I'm probably going to root for Vegas though since it's a pretty cool story. Has any first year team ever gotten this far in their first year? Anyone even close? I think the Marlins won the World Series in their 4th year of existence but can't remember anyone else doing it that fast

I won't bore you (or everyone else) with a repost of my lengthy comment on the Sabres. I grew up a Sabres fan and was there for all the playoff games during the ill-fated run to the cup in 1999. Ultimately, I was forced to change allegiance due to utter incompetence and mismanagement in the front office. I just like the Red Wings style of play. Plus they have one of the coolest jerseys in all of sports, along with the Blackhawks. But, Chicago has that punk Patrick Kane, so I can't root for them.

Pull all you want. Doesn't bother me a bit. Not as much of a Bills fan as I am (was) a Sabres fan. Nevertheless, it's been a tough go for that city. Even Cleveland feels sorry for them. The best thing that ever happened to that town was 5/9/77. What does BILLS stand for anyway? Boy I Love Losing Superbowls I also never understood why so many people in impoverished countries were Bills fans. Then I was told that all of the pre-printed hats and shirts that read "Buffalo Bills Superbowl Champions" were donated to charity. Can't sell them here.

I totally love Post-Brent as well. I have a problem, though. I enjoy most work from say 65 through, oh, 95 or so. Can't get enough of all the different bands they were. If you get tired of one era for the moment, shift gears to a different year or decade all together. Different band, different execution, same kick ass rock and roll. They definitely went downhill after Brent but that isn't to say there aren't some fucking solid shows afterwards. I LOVE the Europe '90 tour more than is healthy. Don't let the haters get you down. Not all of us of course but there are some whiny ass dead heads who can't just let others enjoy what they enjoy.

Just last night I noticed that the complete 9/20/91 Second Set is in my iTunes library. 1/4 of my library is Dead (11.2 days of it), but only have a few complete sets on there. 2/13/70 and 5/8/77 Second Sets are there, but not many others. And thus, big props to 9/20/91!There is 4.5 hours from the Boston 9/91 shows in my library, a good indication that I think a box set of Boston 9/91 would be outta sight! My other favorite post-Brent box idea is a Albany Knick box: 1 show from each year 90-95 (no visit in 94). This would include a Brent show, a unified S90TOO quality version of 3/24/90, but would otherwise be all post-Brent. of course there is the box o' 90s Dark Stars idea...
