I agree Stuman. Vista sucks. Lets hope Windows 7 will be better now that we have all paid to debug Vista for them. It may be worth avoiding the built in burner and instead use a separate (and free) burning programme such as Burn4Free

First thing , no offence to vist users but umm vista sucks . thats just my opinion of course. From time to time discs burned with vista are not compatible with xp systmes . so here is what my wife has to do everytime she burns a disc for me . " First go to my computer - click on open it will say "burn a disc" disc title she has to leave blank - just leave the date there or it will not burn correctly - there is a "show formating options" with an arrow button , click on it then click -mastered- then drag and drop - then click burn to disc. " Now i dunno if all vista systmes are like this but thats how my wife has to do it . I hope this helps .. Take care and I hope everyone has a super nice day !! Stu ..

Ok, I'll ring in on the debate...
Like many here I remember the days of analog and the introduction to digital. I will say after being immersed in digital since the mid 80's and up until about a year ago, I've made the swtich back to analog format. What I mean is I prefer analog for many reasons. Of course, I don't have all these shows on cassette , reels and LP anymore; I have my share of CD's, DATs, DVDs and HD's, but I now employ a complete analog system. I use a Dynaco ST-70 tube amp and a Dynaco PAS-2 tube preamp. I also use my Revox A-77 reel to reel, Thorens TD-125 mk II turntable with the Shure SME 3009 R2 tone arm, and I've got a Yamaha KX-630 tape deck. I've also got a Sony DAT ZA5ES. I'm using a assortment of speakers from Bose 301 series II mid 80's, Altec late 70's bookshelfs, and finally getting some Klipsch La Scalla's from mid 80's. I use a regular commericial Sony CD player but use a "cheap" but effective digital to analog converter that uses a Burr Brown PCM-1716 chip. I use the digital out from the CD player into the DA converter...so there is only one conversion to analog. What I'm saying is this: old debate of digital is compressed anyway in comparison to a nice master reel, well pressed LP. Of course, digital get's better when the sample rate is higher and the resolution increases. However, I still will contend after years of using digital professionally as a studio engineer and as a musician has it's advantages greatly, but I still rather fancy the sound of analog better. As for the archive , it's simply that a resource library of digital material. One thing for sure is that digital is THE way for mass producing and distributing music. However, just last year the greatest increase in sales was in vinyl records that are being pressed by re-issues of older recordings or new releases by artists who relish analog formats. by the way, you can still get the digital SBD stuff via stream if you really want to work at it you get a digital s/pdif output from your computer via the USB - take that feed and go digital into a either another HD or DAT - then you can input that into some editing software splice the gaps, it won't be bit for bit, but it will be marginal digital quality... For GD shows you can only do this for Audience recordings. Soundboards may only be streamed. Go for example to http://www.archive.org/details/gd1975-06-17.aud.unknown.87560.flac16 Scroll down the page to the heading Individual Files. You will see a whole table of files and formats. The first column is headed FLAC. Click on each file to DL it. Tedious but it works. If you DL the Down'em all plug in for Firefox you can DL all the FLACs in one go and save a lot of bother. Other Artists let you DL FLACs of Soundboards, including David Gans http://www.archive.org/details/DG20030420.flac16

Hey we have to have somthing to talk about , lol .. And I agree with the rest of what you said CB. You said we can download flac from the archives site ? that one is still a mystery to me . maybe I`m doing something wrong there . And yes we should purchase some offical releases when we can , and I do that when my credit card allows me to do so ..

Perhaps it is better not to think of The Archive as a trading site, but as a permanent online library. It is like a massive stored music collection that belongs to everyone. So downloading a file as an MP3 from the Archive is like making an MP3 from your own losslessly stored music collection. So long as the FLAC/SHN files remain permanently on the Archive in unaltered state, then anyone can always go back there and guarantee to get the best possible version. It is a matter of honesty and trust that people do not upload files to the Archive that have a misrepresented lineage. And there are people out there who will soon detect an MP3 generation in a file by looking at the frequency range. By withdrawing permission for making Soundboards downloadable from the Archive the Dead helped create all this muddle over formats etc. If we all knew that the best quality shows were permanently stored and available 24/7 on our behalf in the best available (ideally lossless) format, then many of these discussions would not be taking place and the trading and torrenting sites we use might not exist in their current forms. But what then would we all have to talk about? Of course the Dead had reasons for doing what they did. There is the issue of intellectual property of their works (important to any artist) and, naturally, money (Blair Jackson has reported here that the Archive virtually killed off sales of the later Dicks Picks releases). So now it is a bit harder and more confusing to get all the shows we want as easily as we want, but it is not really that much hassle. And we should not forget just what an act of tolerance and generosity it is that this site tolerates open trading of shows that are not officially released. One way of saying thanks is to try to buy at least some of the official releases. It would be interesting to know how the sales of the these are holding up, given that fact that, despite the Archive restrictions, most of the shows are still quite easy to obtain.

    WAV has loss too
I recentley been listening to a show in flac format via Foobar 2K. I then converted that show to WAV so i could burn it to disc , well it sounds way different to me ..the high`s and lows are cut down and it dos`nt have that punch you in the face feel to it anymore . I`m glad i save everything in flac mode .. Now I have been working in the mechanical services industry all my life ie, cars, trucks, small engines ,motor cycles, so I have a pretty good ear for sound . I can hear a bolt rattling loose on my Harley when i`m going down the road at 80 mph. plus I did own a small electronics repair shop for a little bit ( that was more just a hobby actually ) so I`m familliar with osciloscopes and how sound waves look and sound like .I built speach prossesors for cb radios that compressed the highs to make cb raidios sound like they had more power then they actually did , by increasing the sound modulation.. I`m suprised I can hear like that at my age , lol .. So with the help of CB and Rick I discovered the foobar programand nothing sounds as good as shn/flac , not wav not mp3 not any of the popular formats.. Now getting back to the LL web site , if it is not permited to seed from a mp3 converted to flac then why is there a link to the archives site for a some of those shows ? I mean anyone can create a flac file . I have a tape to pc converting program so i can archive my personal tapes to my pc then burn to disc. now with that progran and that tape deck I can record any streaming audio then send it back through my antique EQ then back into my pc make needed changes , create the text document , use traders little helper to create the md5 checksum and then create the flac files . And the end product is somthing that sounds better then the original audio .. I know there was somthing else i wanted to say but i can`t remember it now .. Anyway , I hope everyone has a most excelent day !!

    No, wav files are lossless
But they are not compressed. And you can copy an mp3 from one folder to another and not lose any information, It's just in editing software. Of course when the mp3 was originaly made it lost the info on the high and low end of the song to make it smaller. But you can copy an mp3 to another computer or disc as an mp3 and it remains the same file. If you want to see some generation loss try this. Convert some mp3's to wav and burn cd with them. Then take that cd and convert the wav files back to mp3 and compare to the original mp3s.

There are 464 profiles/users at deadnet at this very moment. Holy crap. The average (mean) way back a few weeks ago was like 10 to 20. I checked a few profiles, and all the one's I checked had been activated exactly 1 week ago +/- a few hours or a day. What in the world? Are they all here for the freebies? I have had more trouble accessing pages and logging in today. Is it a bandwith issue? We here at the super secret vineyard need to prepare for a population boom once folks start figuring out what we are up to. This could be mass chaos...;-) Look what happend to Dodge City in the late 1800s and urban sprawl today. :-)

I'm gonna do a 2-part JGB 76 vine (with the help of the first few people to sign up, for WAV), but I will wait until December, both because I am working a lot over the next couple weeks and because I'm certain Marye is very busy with the contest. Hold on for a little longer and it will be here. I don't think it is a great year, and there are some duds (early in the year the music is played TOOOO SLOWWWW), but there are plenty of VERY GOOD shows. The ones I will vine are worth getting excited about.

Any Photos? This instrument has been an ongoing mystery to me since I purchased it 12 years ago. The great mando mystery. Any ideas would be helpfull. Thanx

Why does a SHN/FLAC source sometimes have an xxxxx ending (such as 81.01.01.sbd.miller.xxxxx)? Is xxxxx used when a number has not yet assigned? Did the person I received this show from download it as soon as it became available (or someone he got it from did)? Is the sbd.miller.xxxxx the EXACT same as the subsequent sbd.miller.11111? I tend to think that a number has not yet been assigned but the seeder wanted to get the source out there so they uploaded it without a number, and there are no changes in the xxxxx version and the subsequent numbered version. Thanks!

Longrifle was asking me about re-seeding Phil's Free Sounboards Vines. I checked and all 3 parts were last seen with Ursa about 7 months ago. The issue with re-seeding these is that in total there are 12 DVD's with well over 40GB of music. That's kind of a tall order for a re-seed. Could anyone help me and better yet has anyone heard from Ursa? "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

JackStraw, I'm a Who fan and have worked for a few years now to try and find the best Who shows and would be willing to vine the Who if there is enough interest. Pete Townshend's talent often goes under appreciated I think. And who (!) can't help but love the manic drumming style of Keith? Even my 12 year old daughter loves Keith! Entwhistle too was a standout on bass - take a close listen sometime. And, Daltrey's vocals are classic - Talkin' bout my g-g-g-generation...! The other day I was watching clips of Monterey Pop and the Isle of Wight - the Who really were at the top of their game. "Who"se interested? Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck... My 12 year old gave it a 8/10. It seemed a bit slow in parts as they were careful to follow the book. There was an embellishment or they could've done without. Went to see Furthur Sat night at Madison Square Garden. Only 31 years after seeing the boys there for the first time. It's certainly not the same, but I had a really terrific night. Stood near Bill Walton, great energy from the crowd, killer setlist, tight playing, Phil dropping bombs all night.... Funny story: Two girls were sitting next to me. They were young enough to my daughter. They were bitchin about the music all night. Suddenly the band plays the opening chords to Dark Star and i say "Well, you cant still be disappointed, they are going into Dark Star." They say Dark Star sucks and LEAVE!!! What a waste of 19th row tickets on two idiots! Of course, after Dark Star they missed St. Stephen, TOO. The 11, Death Don't have no Mercy, Franklin's!!!!!! What a set. I'm sure all of us who got cranky about the 1987 newbies are cracking up at the familiar tale. And yet I suspect a bunch of those folks who were completely clueless until the band played Touch of Grey are still with us! And the ones that aren't, too bad for them! From what I hear from those who were around in the earlier days, this is somewhat ongoing. I'm sure I made the more knowledgeable groan from time to time. It'll be interesting to see which of these first-timers stick around, and why. But yeah, this is especially aggravating when people who really do love the band have been shut out!

...all the years combine... Many people have seen this list developing in these pages over the past month and I thought that I'd take a minute to let everyone know that I'm Dan and that this list was developed out of my request on another forum here for some shows, since the circumstances of my life forced me to lose the recordings that I had and currently prevent me from acquiring any new ones via computer.I'll spare you the details, though I'm not ashamed of them(I'd relate them to anyone interested via PM), it's just not the point of this post. The point here is to publicly acknowledge and thank the kind spirit and generosity of the members here who heard my call and answered it, without condition or reservation of any kind. That's the spirit of the continuing thread of those who really hear the music, the "unbroken chain", as it were. The addresses on the packages that have arrived continue to reflect that indeed "we are everywhere". As I continue to receive shows from people, the importance of the intention of the people sending the music is as important as the music itself. So, at this time of thanksgiving, I give thanks for being part of the dead community for the last 38 years and thanks especially for all the members who have taken so much time to reach out to me in the last month or so. All your efforts have truly touched my heart. Thanks, Dan

Is there anyone here still signing up for vines that only does WAV and does not do SHN/FLAC? It seems to me that most of the WAVers have either dropped out of the Vineyard or converted. I don't want to bother wasting time burning WAV discs if they aren't needed. If WAVers are still here and signing up for vines, please post and I will be more than happy to continue including WAV cd's with most of my vines.

what happened to Birdsong1969NJ? I know he has been vining for awhile and i noticed that there are some newer vines that got sent to him and have been immobile since. I don't think he would have killed any considering he was active couple months back after not being around for couple months cause i sent him a vine.

once you go "flac," you never go back. I copy the flac dvds for archive storage and then burn CDRs off and on as time permits. I have not heard from birdsongNJ.

Signing up for many vines at once. First of all welcome to the vineyard! Second, from experience, it is really easy to get overwhelmed when 2-3 vines a day start hitting your mail box. Just a very friendly heads up! We have gone to great lengths to re-seed all the vines that have been lost in the recent months and it would be extremely sad to lose all these again. Also please remember that communication is our best tool here!! If issues arise just post so that we know the vines are still alive and where they are. Thanks and enjoy all the music!! Welcome to the Vineyard, a truly wonderful place. I echo JSFC's sentiments, but would add that it might be wise to send a pm before forwarding a vine. This helps to ensure that the next person is still active and checking his/her messages. Unfortunately, some people come to the site, sign up for a number of vines, and then disappear from the site with a load of vines never to be heard from again. Peace, "That path is for, your steps alone."

1 of the new guys here - actually first logged on to this site a couple years ago - just for the info at first. Been getting the dead.net emails for quite some time - but had to register to download the November goodies (thought I had already registered in the past). Well aware of the work that so many have put in and very appreciative! Thanks for the welcome. Wanted to pace myself - but the first few I signed up for seemed to be a month or more away - plus its kinda like the kid in the candy store, right. rest assured that I will be one of the responsible parties - and will post updates as has been asked of me. Thanks to all -zep. (just an online nickname based on my email addy)
