DAVE’S PICKS VOL.3 FEATURES SHOWS FROM KEITH’S FIRST TOUR!

This product is officially SOLD OUT. Stay tuned for news on Dave's Picks Volume 4.

In all the years that archival Grateful Dead recordings have been coming out, there have been just three from the red-hot fall of 1971, Keith Godchaux’s landmark first tour with the band. Those would be Dick’s Picks Vol. 2, a rippin’ single-disc release of the second set of the group’s Halloween show at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Download Series Vol. 3 from the 10/26 Rochester show and Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 2 from November 15, 1971 in Austin, Texas. Now there is a fourth: Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 features the complete October 22, 1971 concert from the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on two discs, with a third disc culled from the previous night’s scorcher at the same venue.

Keith came into the band in mid-September ’71, at a time when Pigpen was desperately ill and the band was hungering for something new to help fill out their sound. A sparkling pianist, Keith was a complete unknown at the time, yet, miraculously it seemed, fit in with the Dead immediately. The live “Skull & Roses” double-album (recorded in the winter-spring of ’71) had just come out, and the band was still enjoying a surge of unprecedented popularity since Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty were released the previous year. They were on a roll!

Never ones to rest on their laurels, however, the band continued their torrid pace of introducing new songs: “Sugaree” and “Brown-Eyed Women” first appeared in the summer of ’71, and that fall, when the band with Keith hit the road, starting out in Minneapolis (10/19) and then moving on to Chicago (10/21-22), they had a whole bunch of other freshly minted tunes waiting to be born—“Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Comes A Time” and “One More Saturday Night,” all of which appear on this set.

The sparkle and verve that Keith brought to the band is immediately apparent, as he tears through rockers and bouncy mid-tempo numbers with the confidence of someone who had been playing this music forever. If the quiet keyboardist was nervous or unsure of himself on this first jaunt, it certainly wasn’t apparent. And you can feel the electricity in the rest of the band, as Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill absorb and play off of the amazingly inventive musings of their new recruit. Of course Pigpen’s absence was deeply felt (and the band acknowledged it at every stop), but Keith’s entrance was so seamless and the energy he injected into the music so impressive, the group didn’t appear to lose any of the momentum they had been building tour after tour.

The songs are a blend of old, still-recent (from Workingman’s Dead on) and brand-new. One forgets that crowd-pleasers such as “Bertha,” “Deal” and “Playing in the Band” had come into the repertoire only eight months earlier, and “Truckin’” and “Sugar Magnolia” were just over a year old. Even a bunch of the cover tunes were relatively recent additions—“Big Railroad Blues,” “Me & Bobby McGee” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Keith handles all of those (and earlier chestnuts like “Cold Rain and Snow” and “Beat It On Down the Line”) with his characteristic aplomb, but perhaps most impressive is how he fares on the Dead’s big jamming numbers. On Disc Two, you’ll hear his thoughtful and inventive contributions to a truly stellar, 29-minute version of “That’s It for the Other One.” And on Disc Three (from 10/21), listen to him as he navigates through a spectacular “Dark Star,” which is split by a spirited romp through “Sitting on Top of the World.” The encore of 10/21 also features the first of only three “old school” (pre-hiatus) versions of “St. Stephen” Keith played on.

Most of the 12,000 limited edition copies of Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 are already spoken for by subscribers to the series, but there are a still a few thousand available through Dead.net only. These will definitely sell out—and fast—so if you want make sure you get your copy, order today! As always, the 3-CD set has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman from the original vault reels, and the eco-friendly Digipak includes a booklet with an essay about the show and, in this case, some very cool photos of the interior of Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. All this talk of 1983 sent me back to Dick's Picks 6 - hadn't listened to that in, gulp, a few years. Started right with the first set and man, that whole show (10-14-83) is amazing. Would have been a nice box with 10-15 and 10-17. But hey, I'd take a separate release of 10-15-83 for DaP 4 as a nice companion to DP6.

I am sorry for those of you who haven't gotten this yet... I was out of town for the first two weeks of August, returned to find it waiting. I feel almost guilty, therefore, about sharing this: If you ever feel the need to convince someone that Jerry was a great singer, play this version of Comes a Time (if you ever get it, d'oh!). Some of the most inventive and gorgeous singing I've every heard from Jerry or ANYONE for that matter. Keith sparkles throughout. At about 11:30 minutes into Dark Star, listen to the way Keith starts a lovely cascade of notes, followed only a fraction of a second later by Jerry. Just one of those Grateful Dead / Quantum Entanglement moments. As someone pointed out, there is some tape hiss, and thank god, because it really is a warm and lovely recording - I too am glad the hiss remains. Anyway, thumbs up Dave and Crew. Don't know what's going on with the shipping, but this is one happy camper in Massachusetts.

still not arrived here in France but we are quite used to waiting here in Europe. It's wonderful to read so many glowing reviews, thanks for the posts... quite a contrast to the howls of protest about 'yet another 70's release' when this was announced. Well done M. Lemieux...I know I am going to love it

It have to say - I have never waited so long for one of the subscription releases (Road Trips of Dave's Picks). The mail just came and another week gone by sans DP3. There is no way the mail takes this long - so either there is a problem or someone goofed up. So, whatever the issue is, just let us know so we can adjust our expectations. Just a simple "We didn't get this mailing just exactly perfect . . . unless there are more technical spiders to deal with, expect to receive DP3 by xx/xx/2012" email would be fine. Or better yet, a quick video by Dave. Or even better, hand delivered by Phil. But seriously, I think most of the Heads are a fairly amiable bunch, so we'll be forgiving even if they were sent US mail via Timbuktu. Just let us know.

...seeing as how so many us haven't recieved our copy of DavP3, what's happening? Did they all ship and all get lost in the mail? Are they hung-up at the shipping warehouse? Is there an issue with the manufacturing where they were recalled? If they all are lost, damaged or destroyed in shipping, will they be remanufacturing a new batch? My copies of the first two Dave's Picks arrived promptly with no issues, so I'm curious as to what the hold-up is with this one.

I have noticed that in the last couple of months, shipping times from the US to Europe have varied greatly. Last month I placed two orders within days of each other from the same US online retailer. The second of the two orders arrived in two weeks which is typical. The first of the orders took 5 weeks to arrive which is not normal by any stretch of the imagination. I read somewhere that USPS have big problems at the moment. For DP3 I received a shipping notice stating that my order shipped on July 30 (like some others here) though in the past I have frequently received my order before receiving the shipping notice. Normally I would have expected the order to arrive a few days ago but I have not seen anything yet. It is too early for me to start panicking, given recent delivery times, but I am beginning to wonder. I would be extremely surprised to find that most of the DP orders have not yet been shipped out, so I suspect the problem lies with USPS. Time will tell.

Man, this is terrible. I really feel bad for everyone still waiting. Did they contract some idiots to mail these out or were they not ready to ship. Seems to me that an official explanation from Rhino/Dead.net is long over due. The customer service folks are only blowing smoke. This has put a black cloud over this release. As a European, the USPS tracking number for my DP3 order is: "NOT APPLICABLE FOR POS". No need try try and track my order with that! This is, in my experience, quite normal for USPS packages outside the US. For those still anxiously biting nails within the US - do you have usable tracking numbers for your orders? If so, what happens when you try to track your order? It would seem reasonable to assume that by now Rhino/Dead.net is aware that there is a problem and if that problem lies with USPS, one could reasonably expect that they have contacted USPS to politely ask WTF is going on. It is also possible, of course, that the problem lies with Rhino/Dead.net themselves. In either case, it surely would not be too difficult to post an explanation of what the problem is or what it appears to be. Needless to say, my precious package has not yet arrived in the Netherlands.

Don't forget that Dave's Picks 3 was in the process of being sent out at exactly the same time that the Spring 1990 box set was announced, which introduced a new exclusive vendor in response to the problems that occurred with last year's Europe '72 set. Perhaps somebody with the regular vendor has vindictively had them all rerouted to him to be sold on eBay. If there is a better explanation, we should have heard it by now.

Finally called Dead.net today, 3 weeks after I received notification that my order shipped. My order, a subscription, was "escalated" and assigned a case number. The rep seemed to think that at some point it would decided that the item was lost or stolen and then probably reshipped, but didn't know when that would be and didn't seem to realize it was a limited edition item. They probably are told nothing at that level. It's so frustrating. Three weeks is not normal, certainly. Sure would be nice to have some word from those "in the know." Just have to be patient and wait, I guess. And I thought my shipping and order problems were over when I finally received my Europe 72 box!

...also in Michigan. Hopefully it arrives by Tuesday August 21st, which is tomorrow. Perhaps as an incentive for being a good customer who is inconvenienced by the past due shipping, they could throw in a copy of the "Band Beyond Description bonus CD or a Grateful Dead store credit towards the next purchase!!!

This is all speculation, mostly due to the puzzling nature how some haven't received their Dave's Picks treasure yet. I remember reading how some orders were shipped with a duplicate disc number two (and no disc three). Perhaps upon recognizing this mistake, no furthur orders were shipped, and an additional pressing of the third disc was needed. This would at least explain why there's such a delay. Again, this is all a theory, maybe from watching too many Oliver Stone movies.

If it is a case of wrong discs and the sets have been recalled, thats a substantial f-up from the manufacturer. If it's a shipping issue, thats a substantial f-up from the postal service. Either way, somebody is f-ing up. I've always had positive shopping experiences here so this is definitely an extraordinary circumstance. I appreciate the efforts by the staff on this sight who are trying to get to the bottom of this. Most likely, when the Spring '90 box arrives, my copy of DaVP3 will be shelved by for a good long while anyways, as I reminisce and relive the first official full show release that I actually attended. I don't expect nor do I want a cash credit. I'd rather have music thank you...

2000 copies missing. Rolling Stone reported that DaP3 cracked the Top 40 albums sold the week of its release, 10,000 copies sold. Yes, 10,000, not 12,000. If it's in RS, it must be true. And if it's true, there are 2000 copies missing...

I ordered the subscription, and then another independent copy for a buddy. I have received one of them almost immediately. The thing is, I'm not sure which one, the invoice didn't have an order number, geez, that's lousy. I assume my subscription copy is the one that hasn't arrived based on what others are saying.
