DAVE’S PICKS VOL.3 FEATURES SHOWS FROM KEITH’S FIRST TOUR!

This product is officially SOLD OUT. Stay tuned for news on Dave's Picks Volume 4.

In all the years that archival Grateful Dead recordings have been coming out, there have been just three from the red-hot fall of 1971, Keith Godchaux’s landmark first tour with the band. Those would be Dick’s Picks Vol. 2, a rippin’ single-disc release of the second set of the group’s Halloween show at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Download Series Vol. 3 from the 10/26 Rochester show and Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 2 from November 15, 1971 in Austin, Texas. Now there is a fourth: Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 features the complete October 22, 1971 concert from the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on two discs, with a third disc culled from the previous night’s scorcher at the same venue.

Keith came into the band in mid-September ’71, at a time when Pigpen was desperately ill and the band was hungering for something new to help fill out their sound. A sparkling pianist, Keith was a complete unknown at the time, yet, miraculously it seemed, fit in with the Dead immediately. The live “Skull & Roses” double-album (recorded in the winter-spring of ’71) had just come out, and the band was still enjoying a surge of unprecedented popularity since Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty were released the previous year. They were on a roll!

Never ones to rest on their laurels, however, the band continued their torrid pace of introducing new songs: “Sugaree” and “Brown-Eyed Women” first appeared in the summer of ’71, and that fall, when the band with Keith hit the road, starting out in Minneapolis (10/19) and then moving on to Chicago (10/21-22), they had a whole bunch of other freshly minted tunes waiting to be born—“Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Comes A Time” and “One More Saturday Night,” all of which appear on this set.

The sparkle and verve that Keith brought to the band is immediately apparent, as he tears through rockers and bouncy mid-tempo numbers with the confidence of someone who had been playing this music forever. If the quiet keyboardist was nervous or unsure of himself on this first jaunt, it certainly wasn’t apparent. And you can feel the electricity in the rest of the band, as Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill absorb and play off of the amazingly inventive musings of their new recruit. Of course Pigpen’s absence was deeply felt (and the band acknowledged it at every stop), but Keith’s entrance was so seamless and the energy he injected into the music so impressive, the group didn’t appear to lose any of the momentum they had been building tour after tour.

The songs are a blend of old, still-recent (from Workingman’s Dead on) and brand-new. One forgets that crowd-pleasers such as “Bertha,” “Deal” and “Playing in the Band” had come into the repertoire only eight months earlier, and “Truckin’” and “Sugar Magnolia” were just over a year old. Even a bunch of the cover tunes were relatively recent additions—“Big Railroad Blues,” “Me & Bobby McGee” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Keith handles all of those (and earlier chestnuts like “Cold Rain and Snow” and “Beat It On Down the Line”) with his characteristic aplomb, but perhaps most impressive is how he fares on the Dead’s big jamming numbers. On Disc Two, you’ll hear his thoughtful and inventive contributions to a truly stellar, 29-minute version of “That’s It for the Other One.” And on Disc Three (from 10/21), listen to him as he navigates through a spectacular “Dark Star,” which is split by a spirited romp through “Sitting on Top of the World.” The encore of 10/21 also features the first of only three “old school” (pre-hiatus) versions of “St. Stephen” Keith played on.

Most of the 12,000 limited edition copies of Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 are already spoken for by subscribers to the series, but there are a still a few thousand available through Dead.net only. These will definitely sell out—and fast—so if you want make sure you get your copy, order today! As always, the 3-CD set has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman from the original vault reels, and the eco-friendly Digipak includes a booklet with an essay about the show and, in this case, some very cool photos of the interior of Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. I am happy to report that DaP 3 found its new home in the south of the Netherlands. Funny how, when it finally arrives, after all the agony, it STILL does not dissapoint. Great sound, great performance, great 'composite setlist'...

    Just another moan
I'm not especially angry that things haven't turned up - this seems like a genuine 'one of those things' incident and folks seem to be doing their best to put it right. But the wider issues around overseas shipping costs really do need investigating. It really is hard to pull the trigger on music costing this much. We see the free shipping promotions domestic customers get, then compare with what we're being charged for our own orders, then realise that there'll often be a customs charge on top of this, then Royal Mail will charge us for telling us that there's a customs charge... seriously all this adds up. There must be a tipping point where people say 'no more'. If my other half realised what I'm spending on music that I could have acquired for free via Miller/etc versions, well there'd be trouble! This music's a big deal to a lot of us. We pay over the odds for it because we love it, but I don't think we can be taken for granted.

....still waiting for mine in NC. I made my first call to CS after about 3 weeks because I wanted to get a case number, which I did and spoke to a nice girl who informed me that they were aware of the problem and were "investigating" what happened. OK, fair enough. Another week went by and nothing - so I called again and got an unbelievably snide, sarcastic and uncaring CS rep who did everything he could to antagonize me, and unfortunately succeeded in doing so, while laughing about it. I called back and was REALLY hot and got the girl I spoke to the week before who THEN told me that when the "investigation was complete" and they had determined the "scope of the problem" that they would be initiating a replacement run of DP3, and that I should receive it around MID-OCTOBER. This I did not want to hear....rather than go into the blow-by-blow she gave me Dr. Rhino's number and suggested I call him. Which I did, leaving a message. He actually did call me back about 5 days later around 2 weeks ago and was very apologetic about everything and listened to my rants about Rhino, how they used to be a great organization but it just wasn't the same company anymore, etc. etc. I did tell him that it was a damn shame that he had people working for them that actually took pleasure in baiting loyal customers who needed their help, and that guy really should look for something else to do - there are many of us out here who DO care and have been out of work for a LONG time, with YEARS of sales experience who would never dream of treating customers that way. Anyway, that's another story. He did offer to refund my money, while still offering to ship DPs 3&4. I thanked him for that but declined to take him up on it, even though being one of the long-term unemployed, I could really use the cash, but I appreciated his honesty and willingness to make the call, one of many I'm sure he dreaded having to make. I wasn't happy at all with the "replacement run" idea as I'm a collector (but not a seller) and he did promise to put me on a list and if any of the original run sets came back he would do his best to get one of those out to me. I really did appreciate his call and it did a lot to calm me down. I've been a customer and a fan of Rhino for over 20 years and have bought many of their Rhino Handmade releases and the few times I had a problem they were promptly resolved. So I'll continue to wait, and hope that soon I'll be one of the "lucky ones" (huh? For getting what I ordered and paid for almost 9 months ago and was supposedly shipped (but with no tracking number) over a month ago?) who post that they've received their much-anticipated and long-awaited DP3....sorry for the length of this post and thanks for indulging me. I needed to do it for cathartic reasons.....

Look on the bright side....if (as I have) you have not freceived the original DaP3, you should (in theory anyway) receive what is promised to be a specailly prressed 'very limited numbered edition of Dave's Picks: Volume 3.' For a collector, this limited repressing will be far far rarer than the ordinary numbered DaP3. If you are very bad, you will not tell Dr Rhino if your original order arrives, and so you will then have BOTH the limited edition and the limited limited edition. Yay.

I'm in the UK and no DP3 yet or the Spring set - but I would not be expecting that until the end of the month at least. I had my DP shipping note at the beginning of August so getting beyond 6 weeks now which is very slow based on previous experiences. I would say up until this time 10 years plus ordering from here has had no problems at all so its does not seem to be a regular thing! I agree with many that the shipping charges to the UK do seem to be out of line with other international shipping charges from other sites, and they certainly need further investigation. I agree with richie17 that the final kicker is the UK Royal Mail.....getting charged £8 to pay a VAT charge that is often less than that stinks!

cosmicbadger...i'm very curious to how they will number this select print of dave's picks 3...i still have not got my dave's picks 3 in chicago and i really hope they don't just print out a few hundred copies and ship them out without numbering them at all. i really doubt they would do that though... on a separate note...i received Spring 1990 about a week ago...wow! it's beautiful and the music sounds wonderful. i'm very very happy with the purchase

.... no DP 3 yet. I am in the October list of course... However two strange things, one good the other bad, occurred with the Spring box: 1. The shipping was made by the DEUTSCHE POST resulting to a inter-EU shipment without ANY customs/duties whatsoever. The german post labels were glued on the USA ones... 2. The nice unsealed custom designed shipping box was fully labeled by the shipping labels that cannot be removed without damaging it. Best to all Alex

Finally received my Pick 3. Ahhh....Of course, now the first thing I do is check the discs and the music for defects. Ouch. Just wondering if anybody could tell me if the slight click/skip/glitch(?) at about 4:20 from the transition from Jerry's solo to the chorus is in the original tape and hence everyone's copy or just mine? Thanks in advance, Deadnoggins.

Like others I still haven't recieved DP3 or Spring 1990, and have not had a reply from Dr Rhino despite e-mailing back on the 23rd August and several times since - but thanks to all your comments at least i get an idea of what is happening. I also wholheartledly and agree with the deterioration in Rhino's toghetherness and with the other UK deadheads about the shipping costs to the UK and our Royal Mail rip-off (writing to my MP on that one only got a condescending reply from thr Royal Mail) - It seems to take an age for GD items yet private purchases arrrive in less than a week from the US and are often cheaper. mmmmm How about a box from 1968/9 next. Although I have ordered 1990 - the only year I managed to see the Dead - I struggle with that era. But hey ho if we wre all the same it would be boring.

Many of us who reported non receipt of DaP3 have yesterday received a futher email notification of the reissue of this for us, and a request for address confirmation. So if you are still missing DaP3 or have reported it missing and not heard anything, I suggest you get in touch with Dr Rhino quickly so they know how many to press.

I'm also waiting for the 1990 spring box too that was shipped on august 22. I'm from Rome, Italy and am very frustrated about all this shipping mess

DP3 took 6 weeks to reach me in the Netherlands. My last Amazon order took 5 weeks to make the same trip. Usually orders from both here and Amazon take 2 weeks. Something is badly wrong with the postal system lately. Not only have I received my DP3 (recently) but I have now also had the chance to listen to it and can finally post something worthwhile on here i.e. something about the music as opposed to shipping problems etc. On all counts this is a winner. The recording quality and the mastering are as good as anything I have heard from the vault. Also the setlist covers a wide range of Dead music. The playing is exemplary - it is hard to believe how quickly Keith fitted in and how his piano-playing altered the band's sound. This is essential GD in my opinion. Now I just have to receive my copy of "Spring '90" (which is currently long overdue) and hope that it is at least half as good as DP3

Well it looks like a batch of DP3s have arrived in the UK - mine turned up this morning. Interestingly, although the post sticker only gave the month with the day section strangely blank (09/ /12) the customs form (CN22) did have a hand-written date of 9/7/12 (that's September 7th for us in the UK) so it looks like the fault for the delays lies with the despatcher rather than the various postal services. Now where is that S90?

Well another week goes by and yet another e mail today asking me to confirm receipt of DP3 (or lack of). It's a negative unfortunately & still no sign of the Spring '90 box either. It would just be nice to be able to talk about the music! In answer to those wondering why these are limited editions & only available from here (or Ebay), I suspect that if the boxes were available through normal retail outlets, then very few people would now continue to purchase through this site. Apologies that this is another (justified) rant.

Here in the UK - Stockport, Cheshire, to be precise DP3 AND S90 have arrived on the same day! DP3 was posted out from Redwood CA on the 7th September. S90, for which I paid nearly $40 worth of customs fees was posted out to me via Germany, but I don't know when. Thank god for that. Let's hope that future mailings will be considerably less fraught than this, not to mention considerably cheaper. Hang in there....

I am amongst those who are still waiting for both releases discussed here. I am not too worried, ultimately they will find their way into my collection. These kinds of waiting periods have been known to happen. Sometimes the shipping took unexpected long days, sometimes the shipments were held up by customs. What worries me is the complete lack of (felt) professionalism when it comes to the email answers I receive. I write an email saying that DP 3 has not yet arrived and that I still wait for Spring 90 as well. Then I receive automated answers that I can make no use of. Next thing I see is a confirmation that Spring 90 will be sent again, only to see a cancellation of my (original) order the next day. Maybe the whole affair would be more relaxed, if real people wrote the emails... don't know if this is an option worth considering. As I said, I am not worried and even if the orders were cancelled and items unavailable, it is not the end of the world. I want the security and trust that I will not be charged for items I will not receive.... .. and yes, I would have enough trust to order here again and hope that the music that I love ill find its way across the pond...

On the 2nd of August I received a mail that the DP 3 was shipped out on the 30th of July, "please allow 10 to 12 days for delivery". Thanks for the help, Marye! I received DaP3 on September 11. I mentioned it in this thread, but that may not count. Since that time I have received two emails saying somtheing along the lines of: "We notice that manya people that initially did not receive DaP3 have received this item over the past few days. Please confirm (or deny) that you received DaP 3." Being the honest guy that I am, both times I confirmed I received it. I'm more or less convinced, based on recent experiences, that I may receive a second DaP3... Simonrob and others, did you receive similar emails? Also, Simonrob, I may have missed it, but are those your liner notes in one of the E72 releases (forgot which?)

I also received two e-mails asking whether or not I had received my copy of DP3. The first one arrived just after I had got my DP3 so I was also able to reply in the affirmative to both mails. As to whether a second copy will arrive in October I have no idea, but based on experiences here, only a fool would rule out the possibility. Indeed, the liner notes to the Bickershaw Europe '72 show were penned by me. From reading the notes, I hope you got a bit of a feeling of what it was like to be there. It is possible that my copy of "Spring '90" arrived today. When I got home from work there was a card from the postman indicating that he had tried to deliver a package but no details were given as to what it is or where it came from.

Now, according to the standard schedule, we should be looking at the shipment of Dave's Picks Vol. 4 in about 5-6 weeks. Dave must have already selected the show by now. I wonder what it will be? My guess is an '81-83 era show. Thoughts?

I agree with you. Based on some comment Blair Jackson made I expect 1982. 1982 came up in some thread (his blog, or a response on a forum) and he said something to the effect of "but more on that in the near future". Although the year is somewhat underrepresented, my preference would generally be 1966-1977, for some time to come excluding 1972 and 1977 (and to a lesser extent 1973 and 1974) as a lot has been released from those years recently. For what it's worth; always nice to speculate!

I emailed David Lemieux and he confirmed that the DaP 4 was picked and ready to go, just waiting on Rhino to release the information. He didn't offer any hints about what show was chosen, though. Still nice to get a quick email response!

First, just need to mention I'm still loving DaP 3. Really a new favorite... But that doesn't stop me from also loving the "what's next?" game as much as the next person :-) 1982 would strike me as unlikely since there was just an '82 release last year in the last volume of Road Trips (really good release, and one of the best Terrapins period). It would be fine with me though.... but if it's going to be an 80's release I've a hankerin for something from '84 (or the also weirdly underrated '81). And yes, I dare say it, a Road Trips-style compilation from several shows in one of those years would be dandy with me... On a related note, how about an Essen '81 (CD/DVD) release in stores :) And someday, Lindley Meadows '75, not my favorite show, or the most jammy, or the best, but probably the show I go back to the most it just hits me in all the right places...(also probably deserving of broader release than Dave's Picks?) all you do is troll what i write, so you can follow up with a snappy comment. do you monitor my account manually, or get updates whenever i post? how big of a loser must you be to continue to bait me into an argument three months after the last one ended? especially, since my final post was deleted by an admin, and you got the last word. there is so much to do on the internet yet you concern yourself with me. i'm sure whatever they release you will give it two thumbs up, five stars, and a perfect 10, because thats who you are. i can honestly say, i was more impressed with "road trips" than i am with "dave's picks" thus far. volume 2 was decent, but the others were average shows taken from great periods. i hope the new release contains pigpen or brent. that's not going to change. i definitely don't want a keith show. i'd almost rather have a vince show, but not really. if you want to talk about music feel free to engage me, but i have a feeling your taste is way too limited for us to hold a meaningful conversation.

If the shoe fits (and it does)... kick yourself with it. As far as breadth of musical tastes goes -- PF, we've seen you brag on yours: it certainly didn't merit your swagger!

yet you chose to focus on the one thing i said that was critical. the limited edition numbers didn't represent when orders were placed, contrary to what customer service representatives had said on multiple occasions. i brought it up in the forum, i wasn't the only one who felt a bit slighted, but it was the only thing you focused on. as for my taste in music; i listen to every genre, and i own the vast majority of what are widely considered the most definitive albums of each genre, and that fact holds true no matter what music website or publication you consult. you can say my taste isn't as good as i think, but you still won't share what you listen to for others to criticize. in one post i listed a few hundred different artists whose works i own. many of which the majority of the people on this site haven't heard, so i have a hard time believing your evaluation is honest.

All this talk of 1983 sent me back to Dick's Picks 6 - hadn't listened to that in, gulp, a few years. Started right with the first set and man, that whole show (10-14-83) is amazing. Would have been a nice box with 10-15 and 10-17. But hey, I'd take a separate release of 10-15-83 for DaP 4 as a nice companion to DP6.

An '84 show would be a cool! It's a completely unrepresented year, besides one track from the So Many Roads set and one bonus track on the re-issue of In The Dark. If it's a Pigpen era show thats picked, I always welcome those with open arms and ears, especially '68-'70. I have to admit that I would almost prefer a Vince (with or without Bruce) show over another Keith & Donna release at this juncture, unless it's finally 8/27/72. Since recieving my copy of the Spring '90 box, I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to anything else by the Dead, including most of DaP4. The '90 box is just way too awesome! An '84 show might be enough to peel me away from the box for a minute.
