Announcing July 1978: The Complete Recordings

We’re pleased to announce JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, five incredible unreleased shows and the first official release from the long-lost tapes, recently returned to the Grateful Dead’s vault. Follow the Dead on a sonic journey through a superb selection of settings, an often epic adventure that finds them winning over Willie and Waylon fans in Kansas City, conjuring charisma in Omaha, and elevating the Red Rocks beyond their already spiritual planes. With five distinct performances painting the masterpiece of 1978, Betty Cantor-Jackson's always-pristine soundboard recordings, and the "hall-of-fame pedigree" of the Dead's first-ever shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, this is one release that far exceeds excellence in music, sound quality, and rarity.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS includes Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO (7/1/78), St. Paul Civic Center, St. Paul, MN (7/3/78), Omaha Civic Auditorium, Omaha, NE (7/5/78), and Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison CO (7/7/78 and 7/8/78) - all of the performances in this collection are drawn from the band’s master soundboard recordings, each newly mastered by Jeffrey Norman. The set also features original artwork by esteemed cartoonist Paul Pope (D.C. and Marvel comics) and in-depth liner notes written by Nick Meriwether (Grateful Dead Archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz), as well as a producer’s note from producer David Lemieux.

Due May 13th, we anticipate that this extraordinary box will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks right here.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Picked one I attended. Thanks man.. Spring '87. What a difference a year made and what a recovery Jerry was making. Totally revived and refreshed. Gave us all hope and new energy. Hampton was my spring stomping ground, it was a bit of a drive from where I was living, but I seemed to be able to fit the pilgrimage into my school schedule year after year. Always an adventure. Thanks man..

great article Jim, it truly shows how innovative the GD have always been with their marketing tactics. Love the reference to the Wall Street Heads toward the end as well; nice to know that the kindness can permeate into every field and actually have it help drive some people's work ethic and values when perhaps we may have thought them to be non-existent as outsiders. amazing idea in this day and age. I too am going to wait, I don't like the business practice for making us pay for a box of shows 6 weeks before they ship, take the money out when you ship rhino, come on now, we want the music, but now it's almost like you want us to pay to have them made first, then ship them. Have not heard these shows, short shows, only 2 discs for the lost betty board shows, so why so short and then, the 2 in red rocks are 3 discs. Not a big 78 fan and I have heard that the Deal on the red rocks show is a scream fest between Bobby and Donna, not a big fan of the scream fests. So, I will wait and see, hopefully, I won't miss out.

I just placed my order for the 78 boxset. I whiffed a few times before on boxes so I am not going to miss this one. I was never really big on 78 but it seems the more I hear the more I want to consume. Sure it wasn't 71, 72, 76 or 77 but it sounds good to me! cheers (and 2 rules at the bar - no religion and no politics)

She even told the band they should come and get them before the auction was imposed, but they just weren't interested.

Hey.. jrf/HF, your shipping notice says "Label Created" in Crozet, VA?? Mine says "Horse Fed" in Crozet, Va. You must have selected the expedited shipping option. On that note, I have been noticing the standard shipping on this stuff is 7 - 10 days, but you have a few options for expedited shipping. The 4 day option is the same price as the standard 7 - 10 days. Has anyone else noticed that? For this box I clicked the 4 day option at the same price.. I doubt if its any different though.

In fact, it was only by chance that my buddy who possesses 30 Trips (I helped pay, he got the box) detected a cracked disc 3 for the '90 show in February, 3-4 months after the box arrived. We called a few times over Feb-April and Dr. Rhino finally got involved and mailed us the replacement last week. (God bless Dr. Rhino!) You are smart. However, I never listen casually to these releases. We stage an evening and devote full attention to listening (while vaping and sipping cold beer). So there's always a delay of sometimes weeks, because my GD bro and I like to listen together, then discuss. Rest assured that we'll be hitting at least one RR Show before May is done! Tracking works this time; sez I can expect Monday delivery. Cool!

JimBo I also had noticed the shipment option of which you speak and did that too - not that it matters now, since I usually either receive the CDs, then get the shipping notice, or as with DaP18, get the shipping notice and then wait til like a week after everyone else get theirs, then it arrives. Seemingly no rhyme or reason. Furthermore on my FedEx 'travel history' section for this one, it says shipping information sent to FedEx on Friday 5/6 (now nearly a week ago) yet there is zero other info in there....I cant possibly believe this has just been sitting for almost a week....unless perhaps this is on the same delivery schedule as Jim's, using passenger pigeons. Regardless, Sixtus is psyched for this one to land. What a month May is going to be.

agree with spacebro last nights movie was awesome. however i cant help but point out that all the tunes they played (saved for the first set brent-erruption) were from the 70's :-) it was a little disorienting though at the end when the feed switched to a dead & co highlight...reminded me i wasnt young anymore and sadly neither are they. at least i'm still here, and long live the strange that remain cannot wait for this 7/78

Really enjoyed show, and I also agree that it was kinda blazed for them to show Dead and Co afterwards. A lot of people in the theater left immediately, and most were gone once Mayer began singing. It was like D&C were trying to say to everybody, 'hey check us out we are much better than our lineup suggests'. I'm sure the D&C ad did its job, and converted some naysayers as it was a pretty good performance. But to me it just was too weird to immediately jump to the middle of a Slipknot from D&C after more than 2&1/2 hours of the actual GD.

See this is where I get a little spicey when I'm spending my hard earned. Yeah yeah I know everything will work out in the end and all that hippy stuff that I partially subscribe too but my estimated shipping date is in the past. May 6th and I received my notification today. I'd like to give a shout out to the person that once posted about the latest cd release SNAFU that "it was tradition". It might have been the delay in 30 Trips, or Hebron, or the Freddy Kruger-ing of everybody's Daves picks, but whatever it was that comment had me on the floor laughing. Happy Thursday. Beers to you!

I wonder about all the anxiety and consternation about shipping. Maybe try this: 1. Order regular shipping. 2. When and if you get a shipping notice, look at it quickly to make sure it is not warning you of a problem, then file away. Do not look at details. 3. Do not worry or think about 'when' it will arrive. You have lots of other music to listen to. 4. When it arrives, be surprised and happy you got it. 5. Repeat.

Then below, dated today, it says "shipping label printed." Jim: I have checked the 4 day at same price for several orders and seemed to get here pretty quick. But the ones that were mostly ordered were warehouse jobs, not a bulk shipment of 15,000.

....with shipping, I calculate it being $28 per show. Now, I may not want to hear the little brother to 7.8.78 on the day I get it, but on 11.10.18, it might be the scratch to my itch at the time. Lo and behold! There it is on my shelf. Plan ahead fellow fans. I personally embrace the recent deluge of Norman mastered treasures that head my way, make me check my phone every day for shipping updates, scratch my head as I balance the bank account, etc. Totally worth it. For example, I dusted off RT 4.3 tonight and went right to the 11.20.73 Denver philler right away. Hit the spot. Now, maybe DP 26 could have philled that void, but it wasn't in the cards. But if I wanted to scratch THAT itch, I've got that scratcher too. Prep for the days between my friends, and as always, stay kind....

Really? Its still cheap. Wait until it sells out. Its the same price per disc they always are. This ones so good.. I bet it sells out a week or two after peoples first listen (which could very possibly be tonight). I think this is very comparable to Spring '77 which is hard to get for more than triple the price.

I've put the July 78 box set in the shopping cart three times and not followed through. I can swallow the shipping cost but with sales tax it comes to almost $160. Why are they charging sales tax? It's not like the Dead have a retail store in my state. I went to the first of these shows and even though I missed the Red Rocks shows in this set I went to the ones a couple of months later at the end of August. The period is dear to my heart but the added costs make it just a little too rich.

Blame the state you live in not Dead.Net.. but most internet sales are taxed these days, Its essentially sales tax and regulated by the states. Its 5% in Maryland. That's just the way it is, its written into state law. As for cost.. if you have at least one good buddy, its free. Your other option is to buy the physical product, which is still cheap, for now.

I live in Scotland. Buying the CD's makes you guys moaning about shipping charges fade into the background. I'm still waiting for my Dave's Pick vol 18 which was posted 27/4/16! So, I thought, I'll just buy the download of the 1978 box set. It does say above that that option would be available today. However it isn't there! Amazon UK are doing the stand alone download for £9.99(approx $14.50) but I don't want to buy tat and then pay for it again when the whole 5 shows become available. Come on guys, what's the script?Love and metta Bill

Finally decided get this box, after the release date. Just got a shipping confirmation and the box is on its way "soon." When I ordered, I got a $5.00 discount on shipping, I wish it was more but what can you do but be grateful for a small discount. It was eaten up by Pennsylvania's 6% sales tax. (8.50% or something like that, if you live in the City/County of Philadelphia.Delivery sometime next week. For those who already received their box, is it about the same size as the May 1977 box from 2013?

Hahaha it cracks me up how people in the US can complain about the fact that an order will take 3 or 4 days to reach them. I received Dave's Picks 18 a couple of days ago. It took 15 days to get here which is about the fastest I have ever received an order from Dead.net. As regards taxes, people who complain about 5%, 6% or even 8.5% sales tax should try living here where sales tax is a eye-watering 21% - on everything. When the July '78 box reaches me, not only will I have paid $24.99 shipping, but I will also have to pay the 21% sales tax on top of that. Add to that import duty and potential processing costs and you can see why I laugh in the faces of those who complain about having to fork out an extra couple of dollars. I recently ordered a couple of CDs from Amazon in the US. The order value was $26.40. Add to that $8.97 International shipping, then here I had to pay sales tax (BTW) of 4.96 Euros (= $5.60) and 13 Euros (= $14.70) for processing - paying for some guy to work out the BTW and print the payment form. Total cost $55.67 for goods worth $26.40. I have come to accept that this is just the way it is in a world where everyone is a thief. No point in getting mad, and getting even is not an option!

looking on internet at things and stuff. did some research on Red Rocks. How I wish I had made an effort to see the GD there. first show was in 82 Ventura, and I heard people talking about going to Red Rocks, but I had no clue what that meant. Could have gone in 83, but college had started again. 84: duhhhhhhh. 2 dum to try. 85: again, school had started up. 86: Jerry coma 87: too wimpy wimpy wimpy to make an effort. that was the last chance. What a place to experience the GD. the warmer weather makes me jones like crazy for a GD concert. AHHHHHHHH!

I will be doing a road trip from Seattle to Missoula and back this weekend to pick up my son from college. First leg is tonight: Seattle to Spokane. 9/24/72 and 5/16/81 are on the agenda. Then from Spokane to Missoula Saturday: the Dave's Picks of 5/14/74. :))))))))))))))))))))))))))) My son is not a Deadhead, so I will listen to some other stuff on the way back. but for 18 hours, it's me and the GD, in the car and a hotel, travelling across some beautiful terrain.

Be fully prepared to wait until mid-week. I live 2 hours away from Crozet and my DaP went down to Charlotte, NC and up to NJ before coming back here to VA. Right now my '78 box sits in Martinsburg WV awaiting its return to VA. These releases always get a little tour action in before coming home. I can't say that I blame them :)

The spooky thing is that the download options appeared this afternoon (UK time) but have now disappeared. On the plus front the Red Rocks show was delivered by Amazon (it carries a "made in the eu" imprint hence the immediate delivery rather than waiting for it to be imported from the US) and first impressions are positive. Once the download option is back I shall certainly grab the high-res option as it is still much cheaper than the physical version once you factor in international postage and the whopping customs charges. With the latest Daves Picks also arriving today I have the weekend pretty sorted!

Perhaps in addition to focusing all this attention on grabbing the reels from the vault, we should also grab one or two of the mail man heads and liberate a few hundred copies from Crozet for same day delivery. I envision that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer got Newman (the mail carrier) to use his mail truck and take a shipment of bottles and cans to Michigan to get the 10 cent refund instead of the 5 cent refund you get in NY. Instead, we will grab a mail truck, throw a big steelie on the back, drive to the warehouse in Crozet, distract and fill it up with Box Sets and hook all our buddies up with same day service. What could possibly go wrong?

While I ponder whether I want to fork over the extra $14.25 in Illinois tax to buy this set I would caution all about the downloads. I don't know if they are all like the May 1977 set I bought but with that one each song has a short dropout at the end of the file so that it is impossible to listen to the shows continuously without a little dropout whenever the file advances. Some people may not mind but that's pretty jarring to my ears. I thought at first that the files had been corrupted so I asked dead.net customer service. They kindly and promptly investigated the issue and answered: "I apologize, it looks like this is how the product was produced, we are not aware of a issue that we can correct." So it seems that the download files are intentionally engineered to give what I consider a sub-optimum listening experience. All I can figure is that they do this to make it more difficult to produce bootleg copies but it is still a big disappointment. Like I said, I don't know if July 78 was produced the same way but caveat emptor. If anybody has downloaded it I'd appreciate hearing if the files in this set have the same problem.

Dave Lemieux chats a little about the making of this box set. Here he is, calm and cool and well spoken just like the excellent archivist that he really is. None of that highly distracted and sometimes annoying and embarrassing to some viewers. He really shines here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Thkv4Uzm8k4 It's the same video the420dandito posted earlier. THANK YOU DAVE LEMIEUX!
