Announcing July 1978: The Complete Recordings

We’re pleased to announce JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, five incredible unreleased shows and the first official release from the long-lost tapes, recently returned to the Grateful Dead’s vault. Follow the Dead on a sonic journey through a superb selection of settings, an often epic adventure that finds them winning over Willie and Waylon fans in Kansas City, conjuring charisma in Omaha, and elevating the Red Rocks beyond their already spiritual planes. With five distinct performances painting the masterpiece of 1978, Betty Cantor-Jackson's always-pristine soundboard recordings, and the "hall-of-fame pedigree" of the Dead's first-ever shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, this is one release that far exceeds excellence in music, sound quality, and rarity.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS includes Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO (7/1/78), St. Paul Civic Center, St. Paul, MN (7/3/78), Omaha Civic Auditorium, Omaha, NE (7/5/78), and Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison CO (7/7/78 and 7/8/78) - all of the performances in this collection are drawn from the band’s master soundboard recordings, each newly mastered by Jeffrey Norman. The set also features original artwork by esteemed cartoonist Paul Pope (D.C. and Marvel comics) and in-depth liner notes written by Nick Meriwether (Grateful Dead Archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz), as well as a producer’s note from producer David Lemieux.

Due May 13th, we anticipate that this extraordinary box will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks right here.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Oroboros, Didn't you give your statue to Jerry in Omaha? http://www.dead.net/show/july-5-1978 The shows that are essentially new to me are KC and St. Paul. I read about the Omaha show on Dead.net and picked up the audience copy. The soundboard will be a very welcome upgrade. I wonder how they did patch-wise with 7/8. The matrix will be very hard to top in my book, it fills in the missing places on the soundboard. It also incorporates the audience into the recording. The first track with the tuning and fooling around looks like it is missing here. http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1978/7/8-4/getting-everything-just-ex… Is 7/7 mono or not? I seem to have missed discussion of that. Finally, the Wharf Rat on the listening party sounds great! Thanks Dead.net! Hooray!

I never thought I'd see this released, since word was there were
not boards from Omaha and the first night of Red Rocks was mono-only. Tremendous that boards have surfaced. It reminds me of my old chestnut of a story, AND since I didn't get to write the liner notes, here is a preview for those few that haven't heard it. That summer of 1978, when the Dead did actually did circle back to Nebraska......... They played the Omaha Civic Auditorium, where the Dead played once before in 1973.. We got there and the venue was half full (about 4,000) but everyone was chomping at the bit in anticipation to hear them live. I took my Nak 550 into the venue and there was no hassle getting the deck in this time, but remember these were the days before ‘tapers sections’. And each venue or even staff may present a different challenge. But not here, thank goodness. Out in the hallway, the Hell’s Angels wandered about sporting full colors and big grins. They may have been transporting ‘party favors’ and decided to take in a show. Or maybe the Angels were just road tripping with the band (although I didn't see them at the next few shows). My buddy even brought his 68 year old mother to the show. She sat up in the stands “It is just too loud down there!” Anyway, I headed down to the floor with my Nak 550 to set up in front of the soundboard. When I started to get my gear set up and saw this guy beside me with a great rig. Luckily this kind stranger (I have since discovered he was famous taper Bob Wagner) then let me patch out of the back of his deck, which was wonderful as he had a great 8 ft. tall mike stand set-up. He had a Sony deck and mics, but with that high stand his mic’s were well above the crowd noise. We were about 15 to 20 feet in FOB. So Garcia treated us to a blistering Sugaree opener, the kind that drove the crowd wild. His leads mounted into a wave that crests, recedes, regroups, and comes back rolling in with such power and delight that adds a synergistic effect to our frenzied response as his rolling/soaring guitar work lift and subside with the band. Then Beat In on Down the Line, TLEO and now it was Bob’s turn in the spotlight with a Look’s like Rain. About halfway through the song, I suddenly noticed something shimmering in the air between the band and me. I thought “what a fantastic light show! Or have I have shifted into fifth gear just a little early that I scheduled?” I staggered towards that disturbance in front of me to investigate. People were dancing wildly in the middle of the floor as a waterfall played over them. It was about 25 feet in circumference. I put my hand in, water…hand out, no rain..I am standing in front of an indoor waterfall. what to do? I jumped into pouring rain that was INSIDE the middle of the auditorium! Then I stepped back and was out of it. I shook my head and then lunged back into the deluge and danced through Looks Like Rain & then during Direwolf as well and a delightful All Over now. (Complete with Donna in perfect pitch!) Then Candyman and Lazy>Supplication before Bobby informed us “We’re going to take a short break”. I staggered back to reload a new tape and then I did look for some validation of my experience. And I asked my friends if I was not in fact ‘soaking wet’ as I patted my soaked shirt. They grinned knowingly and affirmed that, yes, in fact I was “all wet”. And then this unique show continued, (nice indoor water-feature, boys !) with a killer second set complete with a transportive Estimated> Eyes> drums> Wharf Rat> Truckin> Iko Iko> Around. And then after a lengthy absence from the stage the boys returned to play us ‘Promised Land” as an encore. As I left the auditorium I noticed the water standing on the ground outside, a summer storm? Was this a case of a leaky roof or didn't the Dead just conjure up the forces of nature as they were so prone to do? But back to the important stuff, what were the Dead going to do next? Would Phil rev up his reverse gravity machine and pummel us with Phil-bombs at the next show? Would they levitate the crowd, and have us all dance while floating in the 'cool Colorado range'? I HAD to follow them to those Red Rocks shows in 1978. So a road-trip to Colorado it was. This was the Dead’s first Red Rocks jaunt (and my first as well, although my girlfriend (now wife) had seen Joni Mitchell there previously and raved about the venue) so my anticipation was so ‘high’. (In many ways.) So I packed my taping and camping gear and off we went. When we walked up to the Rocks entrance, the Feyline security crew (or were they the John Scher guys?) were stopping people and inspecting any 'carry in' bags. A security behemoth that I will call “BigBoy’ stopped me at the entrance to look through my Boy Scout backpack. He hefted my NAK 550 out of the pack and held it aloft with one beefy paw, exclaiming “Hey, you can’t take this in!” I gave him my best perplexed look and said “What? It’s just a tape player.” (first lie) Then the giant BigBoy instructs me to “take that back to your car”. I retorted “I can’t, I hitchhiked to the show” (second lie). Beefy Bruiser BigBoy points to my ticket and says “the ticket says no recorders on it, you can't take it in” and I tell him “look, I don’t have any microphones” (third lie) and hold up my arms to be searched (of course my comrades had the mics with them). Then I sighed loudly and popped open the back of the Nak deck and let eight D cell batteries drop onto the ground. “Look, I dumped out the batteries, it can't record”. (lie number four) BigBoy stood there with his arms crossed in front of me, but I could see a small crack in his resolve. So I pulled that thread “Look, I hitchhiked all the way here from Nebraska to see this show, would you hold onto this deck for me? It cost me $600 (which in ’78 was a lot of dough) but if you just hold it for me, and then I will find you after the show. You look like an honest guy.” (fifth lie, this guy didn't look trustworthy). I push the Nak towards him, and this deck is huge and weighs a ton, (a goddamn boat anchor). I really played my trump card here and was trying to hold my ‘gameface’, Suddenly all the heads waiting in line behind (and all my friends) erupt with yells at the BigBoy to 'hurry up' and started chanting “let us in”. BigBoy gives his mullet a shake and then he points into the venue and looks at me and exclaims “Go on, get out of here” and I dive headlong into my first Red Rocks show with a grin a mile wide(high)! Followed by Mary with my mics and my buddies with my fresh batteries (re: lie number four) and my blank tapes. The batteries that I dumped out for BigBoy were already ‘dead’ (pun intended). I again ran into that ‘kind stranger’ (Dr. Bob Wagner, FOB right side)) to plug out of his Sony again. Those two shows were stupefying, and the band obviously enjoyed playing there. Bobby's deer joke, and I remember Phil leading the boys through “Cold Rain & Snow” with his bass punching that tune into a triumphant ‘strut’ that evening.I recall Jerry broke a string during the Scarlet>Fire, which really didn't slow the pace of that perfect evening. On into Dancin' >NFA > Black Peter > Around & Around and then a dual encore of US Blues & Johnny B Goode. The next night was much the same. Each night we would watch the clouds chase each other in the sky as the band serenaded us. Until it became dark and then we looked out ‘over’ the Dead to see the distant lights of Denver sparking in the background. Second night second half, we were treated to a tremendous Estimated > Other One> Eyes of the World > drums> Wharf Rat > Franklin's Tower > Sugar Mag. The crowd was especially raucous as Wharf Rat wound to that tender quiet point and Phil (or was it Bobby) gave a "shhhhh" to quiet us in preparation for the wonderful 'launching' platform/crescendo that night. Those evenings the Dead's aural wonders were matched with the Red Rocks astounding visuals as we were perched in between those massive stony slabs jutting into the sky (and the Dead had a good view as well looking back at us from the stage). As the Dead those two evenings took us all on an astounding journey of Americana, myth, rock and roll, country, space, jam, fable, fun, roller coaster, and turn on a dime delights, it all 'rolled into one'. And then as the Dead finished us all off with “Werewolves of London” we were all crooning back to the dead with our own howl of “Aoooooo”. And Garcia was grinning ear to ear as he bid us all a “good night”. Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.

Dave buzzed in the video? Perhaps. Certainly he was excited enough to play some "air piano" at 9:04. I love these vids. Great release (duh), three "new" soundboards and two long time favorites at an affordable price--that's just exactly perfect. I don't think I've listened to these Red Rocks shows since the old cassette days so it will almost be like hearing them new again. Oroboros--good to hear from you and thanks for the stories. They're worth repeating, especially now; in fact you've got me pretty excited to hear that Omaha show.

...there will be a second box of roughly this size later in this year!Bet it will be '80s too! I don't bet this next part, but I can dream: June '85 East Coast run (6/27-7/2, 5 shows)? Much like this leads to the 7/8/78 "cornerstone" show, the '85 run would feature a "cornerstone" show, 6/30/85. Also, boxes of this size are a decent opportunity to distribute more copies of the 30T CDs. As long as the 30T shows are part of a box, they can re-released on CD! (just not "individually", NEVER "individually"!)Since those shows are already mastered, etc, using them could actually reduce production costs for GDM. I.E., a 6/85 box could include the 30T show 6/24/85... Change is in the air...

It does seem that if Plangent process is involved, then the Betty reels themselves were restored- and maybe a batch of the missing Betty's have found their way home. Green Chili Valverde- came through in the clutch and exploded those fire peppers in a moment of pure jalapeño triumph. What a glorious day for the Squadron of Breathing Dragons and troops of the Ghost Pepper Regiment. We now raise our banner- "Egg Roll Away The Dew!"

Had dinner with Rob last month when DSO was in town, dropped the word on these shows. Don't know how there can be any complaints of releasing these shows, I never even had heard the first 3, I don’t have many audiences from 78' and Red Rocks ranks with my all time favorite shows. Just the passion and joy that was present in Garcia, which kind of carried over from the Spring, just having too much fun. I'm very excited, now if we can get New Haven, Boston, Cornell & Buffalo, that would be another Great May 77' Part duo, Box Set.

Hey.. jrf/HF, your shipping notice says "Label Created" in Crozet, VA?? Mine says "Horse Fed" in Crozet, Va. You must have selected the expedited shipping option. On that note, I have been noticing the standard shipping on this stuff is 7 - 10 days, but you have a few options for expedited shipping. The 4 day option is the same price as the standard 7 - 10 days. Has anyone else noticed that? For this box I clicked the 4 day option at the same price.. I doubt if its any different though.

In fact, it was only by chance that my buddy who possesses 30 Trips (I helped pay, he got the box) detected a cracked disc 3 for the '90 show in February, 3-4 months after the box arrived. We called a few times over Feb-April and Dr. Rhino finally got involved and mailed us the replacement last week. (God bless Dr. Rhino!) You are smart. However, I never listen casually to these releases. We stage an evening and devote full attention to listening (while vaping and sipping cold beer). So there's always a delay of sometimes weeks, because my GD bro and I like to listen together, then discuss. Rest assured that we'll be hitting at least one RR Show before May is done! Tracking works this time; sez I can expect Monday delivery. Cool!

JimBo I also had noticed the shipment option of which you speak and did that too - not that it matters now, since I usually either receive the CDs, then get the shipping notice, or as with DaP18, get the shipping notice and then wait til like a week after everyone else get theirs, then it arrives. Seemingly no rhyme or reason. Furthermore on my FedEx 'travel history' section for this one, it says shipping information sent to FedEx on Friday 5/6 (now nearly a week ago) yet there is zero other info in there....I cant possibly believe this has just been sitting for almost a week....unless perhaps this is on the same delivery schedule as Jim's, using passenger pigeons. Regardless, Sixtus is psyched for this one to land. What a month May is going to be.

agree with spacebro last nights movie was awesome. however i cant help but point out that all the tunes they played (saved for the first set brent-erruption) were from the 70's :-) it was a little disorienting though at the end when the feed switched to a dead & co highlight...reminded me i wasnt young anymore and sadly neither are they. at least i'm still here, and long live the strange that remain cannot wait for this 7/78

Really enjoyed show, and I also agree that it was kinda blazed for them to show Dead and Co afterwards. A lot of people in the theater left immediately, and most were gone once Mayer began singing. It was like D&C were trying to say to everybody, 'hey check us out we are much better than our lineup suggests'. I'm sure the D&C ad did its job, and converted some naysayers as it was a pretty good performance. But to me it just was too weird to immediately jump to the middle of a Slipknot from D&C after more than 2&1/2 hours of the actual GD.

See this is where I get a little spicey when I'm spending my hard earned. Yeah yeah I know everything will work out in the end and all that hippy stuff that I partially subscribe too but my estimated shipping date is in the past. May 6th and I received my notification today. I'd like to give a shout out to the person that once posted about the latest cd release SNAFU that "it was tradition". It might have been the delay in 30 Trips, or Hebron, or the Freddy Kruger-ing of everybody's Daves picks, but whatever it was that comment had me on the floor laughing. Happy Thursday. Beers to you!

I wonder about all the anxiety and consternation about shipping. Maybe try this: 1. Order regular shipping. 2. When and if you get a shipping notice, look at it quickly to make sure it is not warning you of a problem, then file away. Do not look at details. 3. Do not worry or think about 'when' it will arrive. You have lots of other music to listen to. 4. When it arrives, be surprised and happy you got it. 5. Repeat.

Then below, dated today, it says "shipping label printed." Jim: I have checked the 4 day at same price for several orders and seemed to get here pretty quick. But the ones that were mostly ordered were warehouse jobs, not a bulk shipment of 15,000.

....with shipping, I calculate it being $28 per show. Now, I may not want to hear the little brother to 7.8.78 on the day I get it, but on 11.10.18, it might be the scratch to my itch at the time. Lo and behold! There it is on my shelf. Plan ahead fellow fans. I personally embrace the recent deluge of Norman mastered treasures that head my way, make me check my phone every day for shipping updates, scratch my head as I balance the bank account, etc. Totally worth it. For example, I dusted off RT 4.3 tonight and went right to the 11.20.73 Denver philler right away. Hit the spot. Now, maybe DP 26 could have philled that void, but it wasn't in the cards. But if I wanted to scratch THAT itch, I've got that scratcher too. Prep for the days between my friends, and as always, stay kind....

Really? Its still cheap. Wait until it sells out. Its the same price per disc they always are. This ones so good.. I bet it sells out a week or two after peoples first listen (which could very possibly be tonight). I think this is very comparable to Spring '77 which is hard to get for more than triple the price.

I've put the July 78 box set in the shopping cart three times and not followed through. I can swallow the shipping cost but with sales tax it comes to almost $160. Why are they charging sales tax? It's not like the Dead have a retail store in my state. I went to the first of these shows and even though I missed the Red Rocks shows in this set I went to the ones a couple of months later at the end of August. The period is dear to my heart but the added costs make it just a little too rich.

Blame the state you live in not Dead.Net.. but most internet sales are taxed these days, Its essentially sales tax and regulated by the states. Its 5% in Maryland. That's just the way it is, its written into state law. As for cost.. if you have at least one good buddy, its free. Your other option is to buy the physical product, which is still cheap, for now.

I live in Scotland. Buying the CD's makes you guys moaning about shipping charges fade into the background. I'm still waiting for my Dave's Pick vol 18 which was posted 27/4/16! So, I thought, I'll just buy the download of the 1978 box set. It does say above that that option would be available today. However it isn't there! Amazon UK are doing the stand alone download for £9.99(approx $14.50) but I don't want to buy tat and then pay for it again when the whole 5 shows become available. Come on guys, what's the script?Love and metta Bill

Finally decided get this box, after the release date. Just got a shipping confirmation and the box is on its way "soon." When I ordered, I got a $5.00 discount on shipping, I wish it was more but what can you do but be grateful for a small discount. It was eaten up by Pennsylvania's 6% sales tax. (8.50% or something like that, if you live in the City/County of Philadelphia.Delivery sometime next week. For those who already received their box, is it about the same size as the May 1977 box from 2013?

Hahaha it cracks me up how people in the US can complain about the fact that an order will take 3 or 4 days to reach them. I received Dave's Picks 18 a couple of days ago. It took 15 days to get here which is about the fastest I have ever received an order from Dead.net. As regards taxes, people who complain about 5%, 6% or even 8.5% sales tax should try living here where sales tax is a eye-watering 21% - on everything. When the July '78 box reaches me, not only will I have paid $24.99 shipping, but I will also have to pay the 21% sales tax on top of that. Add to that import duty and potential processing costs and you can see why I laugh in the faces of those who complain about having to fork out an extra couple of dollars. I recently ordered a couple of CDs from Amazon in the US. The order value was $26.40. Add to that $8.97 International shipping, then here I had to pay sales tax (BTW) of 4.96 Euros (= $5.60) and 13 Euros (= $14.70) for processing - paying for some guy to work out the BTW and print the payment form. Total cost $55.67 for goods worth $26.40. I have come to accept that this is just the way it is in a world where everyone is a thief. No point in getting mad, and getting even is not an option!

looking on internet at things and stuff. did some research on Red Rocks. How I wish I had made an effort to see the GD there. first show was in 82 Ventura, and I heard people talking about going to Red Rocks, but I had no clue what that meant. Could have gone in 83, but college had started again. 84: duhhhhhhh. 2 dum to try. 85: again, school had started up. 86: Jerry coma 87: too wimpy wimpy wimpy to make an effort. that was the last chance. What a place to experience the GD. the warmer weather makes me jones like crazy for a GD concert. AHHHHHHHH!

dead setter, the tracking for my shipment also has the anticipated ship date as 5/6/16 eventhough the email notification from dead.net was sent yesterday the 12th. No change at all to the shipping information on the FedEx site. FedEx is the worst shipping outfit I've ever dealt with. They should just call it quits.

I will be doing a road trip from Seattle to Missoula and back this weekend to pick up my son from college. First leg is tonight: Seattle to Spokane. 9/24/72 and 5/16/81 are on the agenda. Then from Spokane to Missoula Saturday: the Dave's Picks of 5/14/74. :))))))))))))))))))))))))))) My son is not a Deadhead, so I will listen to some other stuff on the way back. but for 18 hours, it's me and the GD, in the car and a hotel, travelling across some beautiful terrain.

Got my shipping notification yesterday! The notice said it should arrive by Wed. 5/18, but I live in central NC, so I am betting it will be here on Monday, along with my discounted Vault box and blu-ray SSDD! I live a little over 4 hours from Crozet, Va., which still doesn't explain why I received my shipping notification for and my 30 Trips box on the same day last fall!?!

better make sure you take your heart medicine before that 5/14/74 Dark Star. Sounds like an atonal and scary drive. I think Springfield is a good compliment to this show for what its worth. Yea..I feel for you guys across the pond. Sorry.. import duties and delays sound like a real drag.

I dont think I have paid attention in the past but are the arrival dates somewhat random or based on the coast you live on or are they accurate like UPS? Its FedEx and I ask because I live an hour from crozel VA (source) but it says iy wont arri e until mid next week. Should i ignore the arrival date?

00088 arrived in New Hampshire! I've bought every limited edition they have put out (I opted for the USB drive instead of Boxilla)and this is the lowest number I've ever seen. Very nice job on the packaging. The book looks good on first skim. Looking forward to running through these this weekend.

Be fully prepared to wait until mid-week. I live 2 hours away from Crozet and my DaP went down to Charlotte, NC and up to NJ before coming back here to VA. Right now my '78 box sits in Martinsburg WV awaiting its return to VA. These releases always get a little tour action in before coming home. I can't say that I blame them :)

So dumb. I live 20 min from Crozet (in Charlottesville) and mine is in WV, as well. I understand logistics companies have their metrics, but if this would have gone out USPS First Class, it would arrive tomorrow and he Dead store may have saved some cash. Shew, I could have driven and picked it up, for that matter.

The spooky thing is that the download options appeared this afternoon (UK time) but have now disappeared. On the plus front the Red Rocks show was delivered by Amazon (it carries a "made in the eu" imprint hence the immediate delivery rather than waiting for it to be imported from the US) and first impressions are positive. Once the download option is back I shall certainly grab the high-res option as it is still much cheaper than the physical version once you factor in international postage and the whopping customs charges. With the latest Daves Picks also arriving today I have the weekend pretty sorted!

To those of you who have received this beauty, is it about the size of the May '77 box set? Rock on

Perhaps in addition to focusing all this attention on grabbing the reels from the vault, we should also grab one or two of the mail man heads and liberate a few hundred copies from Crozet for same day delivery. I envision that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer got Newman (the mail carrier) to use his mail truck and take a shipment of bottles and cans to Michigan to get the 10 cent refund instead of the 5 cent refund you get in NY. Instead, we will grab a mail truck, throw a big steelie on the back, drive to the warehouse in Crozet, distract and fill it up with Box Sets and hook all our buddies up with same day service. What could possibly go wrong?

While I ponder whether I want to fork over the extra $14.25 in Illinois tax to buy this set I would caution all about the downloads. I don't know if they are all like the May 1977 set I bought but with that one each song has a short dropout at the end of the file so that it is impossible to listen to the shows continuously without a little dropout whenever the file advances. Some people may not mind but that's pretty jarring to my ears. I thought at first that the files had been corrupted so I asked dead.net customer service. They kindly and promptly investigated the issue and answered: "I apologize, it looks like this is how the product was produced, we are not aware of a issue that we can correct." So it seems that the download files are intentionally engineered to give what I consider a sub-optimum listening experience. All I can figure is that they do this to make it more difficult to produce bootleg copies but it is still a big disappointment. Like I said, I don't know if July 78 was produced the same way but caveat emptor. If anybody has downloaded it I'd appreciate hearing if the files in this set have the same problem.

Dave Lemieux chats a little about the making of this box set. Here he is, calm and cool and well spoken just like the excellent archivist that he really is. None of that highly distracted and sometimes annoying and embarrassing to some viewers. He really shines here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Thkv4Uzm8k4 It's the same video the420dandito posted earlier. THANK YOU DAVE LEMIEUX!
