"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

    USB issue...
I am sure that Rhino wanted all of us to get our USB box a month ago. I, personally, am glad that they did not send it out and then have to go through all the "hassle(s)" of getting it fixed after the box arrived. Things happen when people are involved with making anything. How many times did The Dead's equipment fail during a concert? I remember a Jerry Garcia show, in Albany, New York, when something malfunctioned and Jerry "talked" to the audience for a while.Once fixed...the show continued. It was a great show. I am sure that is getting their share of sh*t from people all over the world about this issue. If mine arrives on Christmas Eve it will be a blessing. I can shut off all the holiday music and listen to a few shows. Looking forward to the Albany show. I was there and enjoyed it very much. Mr. Pete--------> aging hippie

I really feel for those of you waiting on the USB orders. If they have extra boxes that were produced to compensate for damaged ones they should offer to send that to you instead. I know most of you would prefer the USB since that is what you ordered in the first place but at this point it would be nice to at least have the option of receiving a physical box, it was the same price after all. Just my two cents and I really feel badly for you, I know how awful I would be feeling about this if it were me.

Since I haven't been on this site for a month (or longer) I was wondering how the physical box set was received (USB purchasers need not apply - I think it's terrible how you've been treated with no information regarding your purchase - so much for future USB sales) So howzabout the physical box - I've been diving in head first on a daily basis. Your thoughts?

My guess is that they "polished" the usb drives with magnets. About as plausible as any of the non information they have given us. A file issue is about the least plausible of all the explanations. Once you have the master recording tracked it is as simple as running a batch process with the desired file output type. First batch create files in 24/96 flac, second batch in 20/44 wave for the cd releases and then a final time in 320kps mp3. We know they have the cd files as they have all received their boxillas. We know they have the mp3 versions because of the streaming. Having the usb drive arrive defective or just looking like a piece of garbage is more likely. Alas with no communication we will never know.

i also assume its a file issue. no doubt we all would want that to be exactly perfect so please fix it. and please just be upfront with your adult buying public. this whole thing is starting to feel like a run of the mill kickstarter campaign. but if the "serious" issue is something to do with the dopey lightning bolt casing, jeesh, please just put the tunes on a quality thumb drive and send it out. i could care less about it looking like a toy. i think most who plunked down for digital only care about the tunes (especially since there is zero being offered beyond the tunes despite the whopping price tag). and if you are taking requests, at a minimum, the book that accompanied the physical box should be provided to the usb gang. a digital file of the book is nice but not exactly a keepsake to remember it all by.

    "serious" issue with USB
I got a reply from CS last night saying they found "serious" issues in the production of the USB that have to be fixed. So that almost has to mean that either the drives were faulty (or enough were they had to re-run everything) or maybe the files were corrupted somehow (maybe something to do with the 24/96). I guess it could have been something wrong with the plastic lightning bolt as well but you'd think if it were a physical thing or drive issue they would have let us download by now and then sent the drive on when they work out that end. I'm tempted to think it was a file issue that caused the entire project to be done over from scratch. I was pleased I didn't get a robot reply of "hang in there" or "we're polishing up the final product for mint condition" bs. Also no ETA at all so I'm siding with those who think this will go on for a LONG time. If they had some eta they could feel good about we would hear it.... right?

Ha, no not a rhino mole. I had a really good experience this week with the customer service group dealing with an issue on DaP14. So I was being open minded about the 30 Trips debacle.

Wow wow wow wow.7 min into Dancin'...just...incredible. A salve while waiting for the 24kt Gold USB necklace to arrive...this show rivals Harpur College and is deserving of entering the 'Legendary Status' Dead Pantheon.

This offering from 30 Trips is a classic Bruce/Vinnie show! The whole fall 1990 tour really. For a band who just hired two new players this tour has some mighty fine moments. New York to the UK and more! Good stuff!
