"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

They ship Fare Thee Well on Friday so we will be lucky to see a ship date before Christmas. Anyone know anyone in the music press? Since they can’t be bothered to give us any useful information maybe a little outside pressure might help speed up the process?

It is pretty shocking we are still waiting for the USB. And no real updates other than the "repacking and making just exactly perfect", which of course is silly. You don't repack something that has never been packed. I am sure at some point after I get the thing, the last two months of frustration will be in the past and I will enjoy the music. Just a sour way to star - well - assuming it ever arrives. As to Harpur, I always loved Harpur, especially when all I had were tapes and wow was it a special one. Though with all the official stuff we have gotten over the years and IA, I find I don't call anything "the best" anymore. So much amazing high quality stuff. But it is still one of those special shows - just a lot more of them for me now.

Kind of starting to feel like a "select" group isn't it? It's just flat out amazing it could take this long to get some digital files into my hands. They could have supplied a download link or sent the files on out in a plain old thumb drive (like I would care). Hell, I'd settle for a email that explained why I was still waiting but I can't get any more info than "hang in there" and "your pain is our pain". I guess at this point it doesn't really matter anymore. Whatever fun or joy I might have gotten out of the thing has turned to frustration and anger. I'm only checking up on it at this point out of principal. I paid a lot of cash so I want my goods.

When given a choice between a Dead reincarnation or some other jam band, I will go with the reincarnation. That's what I mean by "best show in town".Not that I'm going on tour. I like my couch and my collection of live Dead recordings. But it's fun to get together with other Dead Heads every now and then. Other band audiences are generally lame.

OMG, you made me LOL with the super tight shorts comment! "Post-Jerry Dead is still the best show in town." I have to disagree here. I haven't heard anything post-Jerry that I like, let alone would call the best. The best post-Jerry stuff I've heard is Kreutzman's album - 7 Walkers. I really dislike the stuff where one guitarist or another is imitating Jerry. And I just don't like Weir enough to bother. Great rhythm guitarist with Jerry, but other wise, meh.

The reason why Weir's vocals changed in 87-88 was those super tight shorts that were crushing his nuts. :) Anyway, he sounded good (or good enough) last night at D&Co. Had a good time, would go again. They put a good band together. Mayer definitely did his homework. Lots of happy people there, veterans, rookies, and new recruits. The maroon colored double decker bus from NH ("We know the way.....") was there too. Haven't seen that bus since 1995. I was surprised that it was still running. The band seemed happy too. Hope they keep playing into 2016 and beyond. Post-Jerry Dead is still the best show in town.

This offering from 30 Trips is a classic Bruce/Vinnie show! The whole fall 1990 tour really. For a band who just hired two new players this tour has some mighty fine moments. New York to the UK and more! Good stuff!
