During the mid-1970s, the Grateful Dead saga was unfolding like a Greek classic. The Sisyphean Wall Of Sound had nearly broken the band. From it spawned a Medusa head of countless side projects, all deliciously fruitful but woefully not the same as the whole. The chorus lay in wait, pondering the reemergence of their heroes, and wondering if "THE LAST ONE" had really been it...

But in early 1976, Apollonian light and healing would shine upon our intrepid wanderers once again. No more epic battles for the people with cops and lines and tightness, the Dead would return triumphant in smallness, playing intimate theaters and renting equipment along the way. No more ticket scams and greedy promoters, they'd give back with first ever mail-order ticket program, one that had a few kinks to work out but eventually served the fans well.

Musically, June 1976 signaled a Golden Age of harmony and prosperity for the Dead. It marked an Odysseusian-like return for Mickey Hart. Donna Jean was in lock-step with the sirens' call. Jerry and Bob delivered orphic delight with solo musings like "Mission In The Rain" (the only tour they ever played it on), "The Wheel," and "Cassidy," emboldened by group effort. There was fresh repertoire from Blues For Allah, breathing new life to the Dead's continually morphing sound - as Weir once said of the '76 tour, they wanted to play "a little bit of all of it." Old favorites were re-envisioned with cascading tempos and unique sequencing, making the crowd question if they'd ever heard these songs before. And there was comfort and joy in the familiarity of watching the band make it up as they went along. By all means, it was clear that the bacchanalia of live Dead would reign on.

And now the revelry from this epoch, evidenced by the near-studio quality sound captured on two-track live recordings by Betty Cantor-Jackson, lives on, bolstered by Jeffrey Norman's HDCD mastering. It's housed for posterity in a handsome box featuring original art work by Justin Helton. It’s documented in liners by Jesse Jarnow and photos by Grant Gouldon. And it’s ready for a spot on your shelf.

As part of our pre-order for this Dead.net exclusive boxed set, we'll be delivering downloads of each listening party - one for each show included in JUNE 1976 - to purchasers from now until the March 20th release. Order at any time before release and you'll receive all the listening parties to date.

With all of this free time on hand, I’m going to do something others have done. Europe 72 on the anniversary dates. Someone else mentioned that it took them 2 1/2 years to get through the first listen. It took me a year and a half. Now I have time.

Hard to believe that it’s coming up on 25 years since Garcia passed. I’m a bit surprised that not more has been made of it. A special release perhaps?

71 is the deal. Doc was on top of this long ago. Flat out rock and roll. A Capitol release would be very welcome.

As for the person who asked why many of us shun the later years.

Great version of Easy Wind! It would be nice if this whole video of Calibration could be cleaned up and released. The Dead at their best.

Charlie3, the ones that come to mind - my fav from the Closing of Winterland bonus disc. I don't even want to tell you what I traded to get this CD into my collection back in my completist days, when my credit card had no balance :D

Anyway that has one from I think New Year's Eve 1970 into '71. Or was it 71 in the 72... I get the years confused on that disc because they're all New Year's shows. Dave's Picks Thelma, DP 16, Fillmore East Road Trips 3.3 all have Easy Wind. Hmmm could that be it?

I wonder why they didn't play this one more. I would have traded it for a couple of the shorter tracks he did on the Europe 72 tour. Next time you see me & Hurts Me Too.

Hi Doc, good to hear you weigh in on 1971 - any discussion on that subject matter without your input seems kind of in vain. Vein. Veign. Vaughn. Stevie Ray Vaughn. WHO IS Stevie Ray Vaughn. That's my final answer.

I would be less interested in Port Chester and Fillmore East Spring 71 if they had not been recorded on multitrack. It's that tease for pristine sound that really elevates them on my list. If I think about it, the 30 Trips show from 3/18/71 is IMHO the best sounding two track from 1971 pre-Keith (of the official releases). Come to think of it, I wonder if any 1971 Pre-Keith shows came back with that acquisition of tapes from the lost storage locker. Hmmmm. Chin scratcher.

    Yo, rockers!!!!

I must admit that I'm both amused and amazed at all the 1971 chatter flying back and forth. Seems like old times....

First and foremost, my prediction----there will never be a single complete April 1971 box set. It's not because it isn't good, great, classic, and occasionally sublime. It is, and so much more. But for most, it's too big and unwieldy. People bought 30 Trips because there was variety. The E72 box had all that amazing jamming. Selling a box with 20 shows that on first glance (and I emphasize, "first glance") are very similar is a much tougher nut to crack.

Generally, the "detractions" about this period fall into two camps:
    1) "The repertoire". Yes, there is a lot of repetition. Some new stuff, Bobby cowboy tunes, Pigpen's grease---but hey, if you don't care for that, then April 1971 is definitely NOT the month for you. And as some have pointed out, "big jams" are generally lacking. That can't be denied. The big jams vehicles that month were The Other One and Good Lovin'. Hey, works for me, but not for everybody.
    2) "The style". Since I'm a rocker, I'm drawn to the style of this era and revel in it. Pared down, lean, mean, Bakersfield blasts of hard edged rock and roll. Not all of it is sledgehammer material, but some is, which means it's very powerful. But others like their Dead smoother, creamier, jammier. I get that.

Then there's the issue of the Fillmore shows. Since portions were released already, that makes their inclusion in a big box a little redundant. And there's all those guests, and the legalities, and the hassles, and the lawyers. But I'd love to see 4/25 as a solo release----that Hard To Handle is as crunchy as a Jake Lamotta right hook.

Make no mistake----while every April 71 show has something to recommend it, not every show that month was a gem. I won't name names, folks know who I mean. Personally, I think an April 71 mega box would sell poorly, which is something that TPTB dwell on over fine cigars and cognac. But I think a pared down box, excluding the Fillmores, would sell very well. Maybe 5 or 6 shows, my preferences would be 4/6, 8, 12, 14, 18, 21.

Actually, I'd much prefer a Port Chester or Fall "FM shows" box (IF it include 11/7, 10/29, and 12/5!)

Guess that's all for now, time to go read some cosmology and strum the guitar....

    Rock on,

    Doc
P.S. Anybody who needs/wants any 71s, Aprils or otherwise, you know where to find me...……….

All of this talk of '71 made me think of the awesome 2/19/71 Port Chester show released as 3FTV. That show has one of the best versions of GSET ever, a version that like some others from '71 has that great loping feel to it. I also realized that 3FTV has a great Easy Wind, another song I dig and a premium Pig vehicle. Which made me wonder, which other, if any, official releases have an Easy Wind? Haven't had a chance to look thoroughly, but can't think of any others off the top of my head. Nice summary on some of the appeal of '71 Keithfan2112, not really much else to add beyond what you already pointed out.

    Last 5 - more 1967
Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
Grateful Dead - 11/10/67 from 30 Trips. Yeah, I have underestimated this show, it smokes. Can I amend my top shows from the 30 Trips box answer?
    Cream - Disraeli Gears
    The Doors - The Doors
Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come

Edit: DP 16, DaP 10, and DaP 30 all have Easy Wind.

You're probably right. It's probably one of those deals like Winterland October 74. Once you actually list out what didn't make the movie soundtrack, you're not missing that much. But I would take any of these over a nineties box set for example.

Its a great release, no question, but I am not sure I would prioritise a release of the whole run as a box set. Those 2 second set jams mentioned from 4/28 and 4/29 are incredible, though. Its years since I listened to tapes of the whole shows from those two dates, but I seem to remember the first two sets were quite similar, in feel if not actual song selection.
I feel the same way about Portchester February 71-very popular on here, and frequently suggested as the source for a future box - but it wouldn't be my choice.

    What I like about it:

    * From Feb - April '71 they introduced one metric fuckton of new songs. And if they didn't introduce them, they began peaking on stuff from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. If I look at the track list for Ladies and Gentlemen and Three From the Vault, I would guess 65 to 75% of the songs are not on official release prior to these. And prior to that, Skull & Roses came out as an official release in that actual era, so people were getting some of these tracks for the first time. I can't find a better released Morning Dew prior to the one on Ladies & Gentlemen for example, or Midnight Hour to name a couple. I guess add King Bee. New Minglewood Blues. Only Ripple. Second That Emotion. Dark Hollow.

Truckin' and Bertha tightened up by Autumn '71, and Bird Song went into hyperspace after they gave it a rest between the summer of 71 and the summer of 72. Those are really the only songs I can think of that may have gotten a little bit better on a more consistent basis. I'm not saying there aren't any great Truckin's in Spring of 71, just saying it got even better later. China Cat IMHO gained an immediate infusion of energy; the two drummer versions that came prior always seemed a bit crowded to me.

    * One drummer. I think they really began to swing a bit more wiith just Billy back there. Take a listen to St. Stephen from Ladies and Gentlemen - the last-minute is pure rock and roll. Hard to Handle peaked big time and continued into the summer with those great August versions, where one drummer allowed for some intense improvisational instrumental solo sections - I'm talking about the little 2 to 3 minute jams within some of the shorter songs, when they chose to rock out. Greatest Story Ever Told is another. It rocked out extra hard and Spring 71, prior to Jerry picking up the Wah wah on it.

    * Agree, they definitely took a step back in the duration of a lot of the Dark Stars and they played it frighteningly few times compared to 72 and 73 and 69 and 70 before it. But that being said, the times they did play it were some of the best 12 to 15 minutes of Dark Star you'll hear with acouple of 20s. No cacophony, no meltdowns, no atonal space drift. Just pure Dark Star melodies and Garcia noodling. February 18th was awesome, all 3 in April were awesome. You will find beautiful Jam on Feb 18th, which is one of a kind, as well as the Jam on Ladies and Gentlemen which may as well be in the middle of a Dark Star.

    * Pigpen peaked on the organ. It's funny you mention it actually. House listing in the Cold Rain and Snow from Ladies and Gentlemen this morning, thinking how accomplished Pigpen had become by then. By then he was still playing sparsely, which is good because it didn't overwhelm the soundscape, but he also wasn't limiting himself to chords and basic melodies; he was actually improvising a bit in between. You can really hear him on the 30 Trips show from March.

    * Sound quality - the Port Chester and Fillmore East runs are all multi-track sourced.

Got it! Delivery scheduled for Friday! Great news and it has left the building.
Interesting to me anyway that the box is shipping from CA. Maybe they have dissolved that relationship with the warehouse in TN.
Hopefully this goes smooth for everyone out there.
Spring 90 continues at my house today later. Such great stuff. If you haven't listened in a while, revisit it. Sound quality and performance is A++.

All the stuff I need to get done and I spend two hours yesterday going through cd's.

I was looking at the Real Gone DP29 page and went to my collection to check it out and it was some other show! After much scratching and wtf-ing, I dug all 4 banker boxes out of the closet and started looking thru them all. After a couple of hours realized I was looking at the Dave's Pick folder and NOT the Dick's Pick folder. D'OH!!!

Oh well, back to the head job on my brothers truck.

An old Irish favorite - Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan

There's many a man that rode a horse across the western
Plain There's never been one like the Irishman
O'Sullivan was his name
He never packed a shooting iron
The need he never felt
With two shillelaghs always hanging there
A'hanging on his belt
O yippee ki yi oh, me bucko
B'gorrah an yippee ki yo
Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan
He'd give any man a go
(Har the shillelagh
You know we call it the Tipperary rifle
You never have to reload it.)
This bronco-busting Irishman
From the heart of Erin's Isle it was after living peaceful, like
He always wore a smile
But when the smile was leaving him
In a fight he'd
Come unwound Bad cess for any crossing him
They'd wind up on the ground
O yippee ki yi oh, me bucko
B'gorrah an yippee ki yo
Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan
He'd give any man a go
(Why he was so strong was Sullivan
He could put his right hand in his own left pocket
And hold himself out at arm's
Length. No man could do that
It's O'Sullivan I'm talking
About. Oh, well he could.)
At throwing the rope for branding calf
He was a mighty man
At throwing his two shillelaghs now
The fastest in the land
T'would be a sad mistake me boys
To reach for a 44
Before you could get the hammer cocked
He'd have you on
The floor
O yippee ki yi oh, me bucko
B'gorrah an yippee ki yo
Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan
He'd give any man a go
(Did you know O'Sullivan played the Irish Harp?
No. Oh, sure, and he did
He put 75 strings on his two shillelaghs
He'd stretch them out 24 feet, and he had four leprechauns
Dancing on them to make the music
Oh, the wonder of it. Sure and he would charm the coyotes out of the hills)
Across the range from morn 'til night
He rode for days
And days
A'fixin' fences here and there
And a picking
Up the strays
A cattle spread he really built
As big as Ireland
Where he could range a million head
And a
Shamrock be his brand
O yippee ki yi oh, me bucko
B'gorrah an yippee ki yo
Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan
He'd give any man a go
A bit of his lip, he back of his hand
And the toe of his shoe to boot
Oh, Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan
(Now if you're ever riding through the sagebrush wilderness
And you suddenly come upon acres and acres of shamrock sprinkled with stardust
Well, you'll be after knowing
That you've just arrived at the O Sullivan spread
Known has the Lazy Leprachauns
Stop in, won't you?
Sure, and they'll give you a belt of Bushmill's.)

Yes. Tip your bartenders and servers when they reopen. As everyone probably already knows there is no St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City today which is understandable. Today would have been a good day for hospitality workers across the USA, Canada, and Ireland (elsewhere of course). Instead many of those workers are unemployed. I'll do my part to help them out when this thing blows over.

Now bring on that box set!!!

Dear Diary,

Things have taken an unexpected turn for the worse here. Despite being well stocked with the absolute essentials, a note of despair has crept into the proceedings. I "awoke" to find a substantial portion of the rum stock missing, and a solitary bottle of hand sanitizer in the icebox behind two heads of cabbage and a grapefruit. I immediately deposited the sanitizer into the bathtub, cursing my own careless oversight.

It was bit of a haze, but somewhere around the 13th or 14th mai tai - I believe in the middle of When Push Comes to Shove of that lovely '87 Giants Stadium show - I only remember fragments, but there was a hockey jersey being pulled over my head and someone was telling one-liners about my mother. I lunged towards the intruder, mai tai in hand, but age and idleness may have finally had their best of me. I was lying there on the floor, my bearskin cap barely perched atop my head, my only solace was the wad of toliet paper affixed to the ruffian's heel as he wheeled and flashed a wicked grin, pulling a sack of my hard-won 4-ply behind him. When i came to I was wearing a vegas jersey and my mai tai had spilled over the horribly rendered logo.

As things stand my stocks have been severely damaged, but hope remains. We're just staring this journey, and having more hand sanitizer and toliet paper out amongst the proletariat must only serve the greater good of mankind.

A hopeful message has arrived in the post and the wells fargo wagon is now expected to bring round a package any day containing a much anticipated boxed set. To rebalance my humors i put on 7-5-78. Thats all for now.

I've just had notification that Faust's gig in London on 8th May has been postponed. I'm waiting now for similar notifications concerning shows by Live Dead 69, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets and the North Mississippi Allstars. Hopefully we will be back to normal by October when we have Deep Purple/Blue Oyster Cult and Patti Smith.

But if you are healthy and not running out of money, social isolation isn't actually that bad. Just needs a change of gears.

I have what appears to be a standard wintertime cold/flu (been sneezing for 2 weeks, so I knew it was coming). I don’t currently meet the criteria for Covid-19, but what bad timing.
Now I’m really not allowed out in public.

I slept for 12 hours last night, and woke up to dog puke on the floor.....but he’s good now, just ate a bowl of dog food. Now he’s harassing me to play outside but it’s cloudy and wet outside. This wouldn’t be all bad if it was sunny and warm, I could kick back in the sun and roast coffee beans.

Fired up some quarantine tunes - 5-19-74 vinyl.

Looks like my Box has departed Los Angeles with arrival scheduled for the 20th. Hope it gets here early, I have a lot of spare time on my hands.

Fortunately I went to Sam’s Club about a month ago and have a pretty good stash of TP, and went to the grocery store on Friday and got 2 gallons of milk with 14 days to go on the date.

Was going to stop at the beer store yesterday but there was a line in the parking lot because they were limiting how many people could be in the store at a time.
I have 2 cases of various barrel aged stouts aging in the basement, and about 2 cases of various IPA’s, but really wanted another case.
As a back up plan there is vodka, tequila, and rum (not yours Slow Dog) in the cabinet. My neighbor said he has 8 cases of beer so he could help me out if needed.

Bring on the 76 marathon!

...also just got back from a beer store run. Seeing stuff about some cities closing down completely, i wanted to ensure I had the most important items ha ha. No, seriously. I'd cry if all of the beer stores were suddenly shuttered - it's not that far off people. Seeing mentions of potentially June/July/August until this darkness gives? That seems crazy at this point, but altruism is necessary and I will do my part.

Bring on the box - similar to others, I am seeing a Friday delivery. Will make for a solid weekend of entrenchment.
Hope folks are faring well and have a quasi-positive outlook.

Sixtus

P.S. Looks like Amazon has begun to limit shipments of only essential items in the wake of the wold events unfolding. $hit is getting real if it wudn't already!

Beer, remember folks you can never have too much, but you can have not enough!

Saw a waitress a few weeks ago wearing a shirt that said “kindness is cool” believe it was her uniform.

Slow Dog, careful, the basterds are everywhere! Sounds like you need some high powered weapons. I mean good god man, if their taking your TP that’s bad enough, but your personal Rum stash! There’s not a jury in this land would convict a man for defending that!

I received my shipping notice yesterday. Delivery due next Monday 3/23. My birthday is 3/22 so what better present could there be? I was surprised to see that it was going to take 1 week when usually it is 2-3 days. But when I used the UPS tracking no. I saw it is coming from Cali so that explains it. I am very happy that hopefully they will now ship everything from Cali and control things better. After all, they could not have gotten much worse then the past couple of year's cluster fucks! I am VERY pumped for this one. Should be awesome.

You should put those up on a blog. Probably no one would read it except us, but at least we could get to it without scrolling back through hundreds of old comments.

Got the shipping notice last night, due on Friday! Woo hoo!! The email said it could be delivered in multiple packages, I sure hope not!

Irish greeting: God Bless All Here!

Yes this is a good time to practice kindness. I remember those "Mean People Suck" t-shirts from years ago. In the spirit of The GD community: Positive Vibrations to everyone and Love, Light, and Holy Spirit too!

Feel better Icrecreamkid and get lots of chicken soup(Jewish penicillin?), garlic and onions.

Had homemade chicken soup for lunch.

Not sure if lots of vitamin C actually works, but for those who think it does, here’s my recipe for that remedy:

Juice 2 whole limes into a glass
Add a pinch of Kosher salt
Add tequila, triple sec, water, ice, stir well.

Haven’t made one today, but I might later. That recipe also helps soothe a sore throat.

Yesterday I read that some micro distilleries are mixing their alcohol with aloe and giving away free hand sanitizer. Paying it forward there.

I made it through 5-19-74 vinyl which was enjoyable, but having to get up and flip sides really breaks the flow of the show. Going back to digital, haven’t picked a show yet.

Did 3-18-71 the other day and it was awesome. I played that a lot when 30 Trips first came out, but hadn’t played it in quite a while and forgot how great it is. Really makes me look forward to the 71 Doc Box that we will hopefully will get next year, if not this fall.

A bottle of belvidere vodka and a jar of olives and sit back and see who gets their 76 box first. In a few days for sure.

It would be so incredible during this time of trouble for you guys to get up to Mount Tamalpais with a reunited Furthur fo a live concert without an audience of course. Perhaps we could have former Democratic Presidential Candidate Contender Marianne Williamson host this event too?

Because Love & Furthur will defeat this Covid 19!

Just a thought.

Although I hear vitamin c via Margaritas can help too!

Just saw a picture on the CNBC app (didn’t say where the photo was taken) but someone wearing a mask is walking past graffiti that says “we will get by, we will survive”.

When the going gets weird, turn to Good Ol’ Grateful Dead.

I don't mean to sound paranoid, but I'll be wiping down the outer shipping box with a Clorox disinfectant wipe before handling...and then washing my hands very well afterwards. Think of how many people have handled the Boxes. Others may want to do the same...especially those with underlying health issues. One epidemiologist on MSNBC stated Corona can live on cardboard for 4 days...or longer? (I don't know why they tested it with cardboard).

I know we're having all sorts of info being thrown at us, but better safe than sorry.

Sorry to bring anyone down.

I think the cdc tests certain surfaces like porous, painted, aluminum, non-porous, dermal, and the like to make sure they have a guide to let the public know how long viruses live on these surfaces. It's a good idea you mentioned this because it could happen this way. The postal service and other entities have a notice on their sites that precautions have been taken to make sure the employees use latex gloves when handling mail and parcels. They also said the warehouses of companies are sanitized and treated with the proper chemicals. Peace.

Thanks for the info. I'm happy to hear The USPS is taking precautions. The epidemiologist did mention how long it could live on other surfaces, but cardboard stuck out to me since I was in shipping/receiving for 25 years and have handled tens of thousands of boxes.

Kansas is the 1st state to officially end the school year. Unfortunately I think there's far more coming...and with that I'll conclude my Corona conversation.

Seriously, I'll post a real last five after I digest what I just heard. Vegas just got the 30 day announcement. 30.
I NEED this box, if just for sharing with my neighbors. Open the windows!!
No shipping notice for me, but it'll come.

And found nothing regarding this Keith is is ill business . . .. Then I went to the IORR webpage and also found nothing. Of course we all know that Keith cannot be killed by conventional means but . . .. Man, I got Punked'! Where's Ashton Kutcher?

Still, man, I hope Keefs got enough toilet paper, and, uh, rolling papers, I guess.

Box has shipped to UK. No tracking available for international order so I’ll just wait while it makes its long strange trip. Our trip to Algeria has, understandably, been cancelled so I expect to be home whenever it arrives. It’s 5AM here so I’ll do a last 5 when I’m properly awake. Keep safe

....made a serious effort to listen to every Spring 90 and TOO on their anniversaries last year. Did pretty good. But that was the 29th anniversary. 2020 is the 30th, and now I don't really want to chase that golden ring because a fresh box is days away.
Someone said Flaming Lips. Why not?
Please be safe out there people.
