    Dave's Picks Vol. 51: Scranton Catholic Youth Center, Scranton, PA (4/13/71)

    Look out Big Boss Man, Pigpen's on the loose! We're shedding our lovelight on the not-to-be-overlooked Spring 1971 tour with DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51, featuring the complete unreleased show from the SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 AND the 2nd set from the previous night at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA on 4/12/71.

    These gems find the original Grateful Dead quintet delivering some of their most inspired, energetic, and tightest performances. There's a dab of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, a splash of AMERICAN BEAUTY, a great foreshadow into what would soon appear on SKULL & ROSES. And you'll need nearly all those fingers (or those toes) because - count 'em - there's eight classic covers ("Mama Tried," "Hard To Handle," and a rare "I Second That Emotion," to name a few) done as only the Dead could do them with Mr. McKernan and his magical harmonica.

    Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51: SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

    P.S. We had a little extra room on Disc 2, so please enjoy the final five DP48 bonus tracks to complete 10/24/70, St. Louis, MO.

    Thanks DaveRock, was about to note Carter and Williams essential contributions to the Second Quintet. Williams was 17 years old when he joined Miles group. What an incredible crucible those five created. Heading off to northern Vermont tonight, concert with Tom Gershwin Quintet. Heard of this performance from a chance conversation with Grant Gordy after his gig with Mr. Sun Tuesday in Massachusetts. Never seen Grant on electric guitar.

    What makes that band interesting to me is the rhythm section - Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. My favourite records by them are ESP and Milestones. A great live one is the First Bootleg - 4cds from 1967. I prefer this to the Plugged Nickel set, which seems a bit cautious by comparison.

    Crow - I agree on the Second Quintet vs the Trane Quintet - the Second was far more dynamic, a much more interesting band. All of them went on to have pretty amazing careers on their own, as well.

    Amazing what they're finding in those old archives these days.

    A recent review of Nixon's office tapes (you know, the ones that caught him planning Watergate and discussing the illegal bombing Cambodia and whatnot) turned up a reference to pot. Which Tricky Dicky said was "not particularly dangerous." He even seems to consider legalization, but concludes that "it would be the wrong message at this time."

    Well, blow me down. Sure wish he would've said so back then, instead of, you know, launching the War on Drugs and sending so many kind and decent people to prison.

    And almost equally mind boggling it is to learn of the existence of this new Miles set. Which should be amazing.

    That 'Second Great Quintet' with Herbie and Wayne is in some ways the most interesting of all his bands. The "other" quintet with Coltrane is maybe a better place to start, if anybody reading this is new to jazz and just starting to check out Miles. The Miles/Trane group more or less defined mainstream straight ahead jazz and if you're at all open to jazz you're going to love the Cookin/Workin/Steamin/Relaxin records they did.

    But the 'second' quintet? Damn. If the Miles/Trane group built the house, the Wayne/Herbie band blew the fucking roof off. This new set of recordings from what I think must've been their first tour together should be amazing. Probably a little more "inside" than the far out stuff you hear on the Plugged Nickel live set, which might be a good thing. It's a must have, for me anyway.

    So, thanks for the heads up on that one! Can't wait.

    Meanwhile, UPS says that my copy of Jack White's new lp is out for delivery. Can't wait to slap that thing on and crank it up.

I hope next year will bring the "Road Trips" back - it would be a nice way to highlight some years (93-95..) that might not make it as full show "Daves" - all 3 years have plenty of great playing, but few "all the way through" great shows..

Hey rockers!!

Another big rain storm bearing down on Florida. Milton sounds benign, but he ain't. Sustained winds 175, central pressure down to a staggering 911 mb (crazy low).

We are prepared, and have lots of 1971 Dead goodness to hunker down with. Still, my office is considered "essential services", so who knows if I'll be working or not.....

Either way, see y'all on the other side of Milton........

The drops of rain make a hole in the stone, not by violence, but by oft falling......

Rock on!

Now that we know #52 is from Santa Fe in 83. Let the speculation begin about #53, which we should know by the end of month. Will we start 2025 with Maples Pavilion? This might be the year.

Now just making conversation, and certainly never mean any disrespect to our good friend DV (GO VIKS!) lol, but feel a team strategic meeting is needed ; )
Maples needs to come out, but more for historic reasons than other.
It’s overhyped!…good, but not RJ, especially when you compare to the next four or five shows of the year.
So since we’ve had no success tunneling into the vault, YET!, (ever notice Kiethfans been gone down there for quite some time?), and there’s possibly only a limited number of boxes left, we need to make em count!
Also, most boxes, this most recent included, usually have a show or two similar to Maples: good but perhaps not RJ. It fills out the box and is a good way to release some of “those” shows.
So, all things considered, one could lobby hard that strategically it would be most beneficial to include Maples in a box with those magnificent first four or five following shows of February 1973. That would be one of the best top boxes ever, folks would get their Maples box checked, and it’d save a Dave’s for something else 😁
Hey, this ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, this ain’t no foolin around…

FLA folks…may the aaaa, may the four winds keep you safe and dry…
WTF is PT?….been much too long!

Hey OB,

Would love to see a February 73 box, but don't see it happening any time soon. I mean maybe 2030 before Dave goes back to 73 for another box.
Maples overrated?? Really? I don't know, sure seems like a blockbuster to me, but then again Dave will never ask. I do think it might fair better than this Scranton release.
No offense taken. Love talking about the Dead.
What are you thinking for #53?

Oh and three 83s released so far. Hard to believe cough cough that he has only released one 1980 and zero 82 shows.
Vikes off to a good start, but it is early.

Hey rockers..............

Waiting for Milton. Sounds like a cheesie 21st century existential novella............

February 73 would make a great box, as long as it includes what they have of 2/19. Although I'm not a huge fan, Maples is very solid and of course historic. My personal favorite is Madison. But since they recently put out a 1973 box, another one so soon seems unlikely.

Maybe it's time they realize it really is time for a 1970 box. Although there is enough in the vault already to do that, it might depend on what kind of progress is being made with the banana box material. Personally I hope for complete recordings of the February and April Fillmore West runs. Maybe even the August Fillmore shows. All of that would be very interesting and would sell well.

You can find peace amidst the storms that threaten you.........

Yeah, agreed, I don’t see a 73 box again too soon, and Dave unfortunately seems to have to release outdated taper picks, so I’m sure Maples will come out separately…
53: no clue, I could guess, but who knows what he’s thinking, I’m not sure he knows what he’s thinking all the time lol (jK) There’s still 5/18/77 off his list he doesn’t have ; ) and 9/28&29 among others as “they” don’t seem to want to back off 77 at all and like to start with those…
Wild cards, something off his list he doesn’t have: Arks, 9/19/70, 11/7/71, 1/2/72, 8/24/72, 6/30/73, 10/25/73, 8/30/80, 10/14/80, 10/9/84, 7/29/88, 12/27/89, or 6/24/90??? Following past form, don’t think he’d start with an 80s.
Who knows, as always it will be interesting to see!

Boxes: so many possibilities, so little opportunities, sigh…
I’d say $ these are money so bank on em lol

$ Primal: huge 66-70
$ 69: April depending on tapes AND $ one that illustrates the great arc of change over the course of the year.
$ 70: don’t know well enough, I’d say a big one for the whole year due to tapes?
$ 71: April 6, 8, 15, 17, 18, 21, 22, and/or any Fillmore if available
$ 72: fall/Texas
$$ 73: Feb as discussed, Spring, rest scraps
74: not enough for a box, dole out the scraps over the years in 1s and 2s…
$ 76: Summer!
77: hope not lol,
78: don’t know fall well enough yet?
79: Fall
80: ? Not sure why he total ignores 80?
81/82…more intel ?
83: BO year
84: more intel
$ 85: Summer!
86: BO year, hey there’s more good shows then one might think
87/88: no idea
$ 89: Summer 7/2, 7/15, 7/17, 7/18, 8/4 +1, 8/18+1,
$ 89: Fall 9/29, 10/14&15, 10/19 and/or 18 or 20, 10/22&23, 10/25
90: don’t know Europe yet? Otherwise think plenty of 1s or 2s but not enough for a box?
91: don’t know spring yet, summer do 1s and 2s but no box
$ 91: Fall 9/6, 9/8, 9/16, 9/22, 9/24, 9/26, 10/31
The Rest: there actually is some great stuff but as you see we’re starting to get more than they’ll probably release, at least at the snails pace they’ve been moving ; )
Ok, I’m sure at least half of ya will disagree, which is fine and dandy, let the games begin!
Onward!

Edit: oh, let’s not forget Venue themed boxes: Greek, Spectrum, Frost, Shoreline, Dane, Carrier Dome,, Hampton, Jersey, More Garden (both gardens), Alpine, etc etc etc

The annual Almanac should be announced soon here is my very legitimate guess as to what it will be:
7/25/74
Dave usually starts the year off with an obvious choice I don't feel it'll be a show from 77 it'll be a show from 74. Then again I could be wrong and he can go with 12/1/79 a long time favorite of mine.

So of course it won’t be lol

Buttttt, if he did lol
7/25 is due, and the 5/25 show is just waiting for some Luv!
6/8 meh
6/20s good
7/21 is ok IF there’s a tape?
6/30 and 7/27 are ok?
9/14 and 20 are ok too, and the rest, who knows if they’ll rehash any of the chop jobs? If so, hopefully not until after the rest.

Of course a double dog dare ya 69 might make a good opener!
But TPTB seem a feared of the primal?

More like a wish list but anyways, first off. Wow! I have learned so much more facts about the Dead than I could have imagined from just these message boards, and the knowledge keeps on flowing. Thank you so much to all the good folks posting such personal experience and history.
Anyhoos.... The (alleged) 1983 release from the autumn tour for #52 should be a goodie, so no disappointments there.

Though as for 2025 I am calling for (or guessing) a 1976 pick, hopefully 8/4/76 Jersey City, NJ. I also agree with what a few others posted & think BOTH 1982 Frost shows would make for a nice start to the subscription year as another double Brent release for #53. 1973 is also due in my opinion {last picks were #32 spring tour & #38 autumn tour} and I am partial to either 9/15/73 Providence RI or 9/26/73 Buffalo NY. Now, that leaves one more pick for the year. 1991??? Anyways, I am interested in all of this but more intrigued as to what the extra disc pick #54 is!

What list was this Scranton show on?

Love the ideas.

How about they give us a fifth pick of the year each year. Call it For the Faithful.
Stanley Theatre 79, yes!
All the other great shows from 73, 74 76 and yes 82, the neglected step child apparently.

The 83 show is real as #52. It is listed on the my order status when you click on Dave's Picks subscription. This happened last year as well as our good friend JoeyMC figured it out.

I would expect a Seaside Chat soon.

Now, what is going on with MUATM.

I am stoked about that last idea of FourWinds.... for a double show, 4 disc release covering multiple years. Thematically it's very reminiscent of the "River" & "MsG" boxes, also the PNw box.
A venue themed & multiple year, two shows Dave's Pick would speed up the release process considerably and provide for some interesting nuances between the shows & years. Especially for them single show stops on certain tours, like a `72 & '74 Hollywood Bowl set. Got me wondering what other good years and venues would work well with that!?

There seem to be a number of posts about a possible future 1970 release(s) from banana box tapes. I don’t understand why anyone thinks that there would be any new or uncirculated 1970 recordings in the banana boxes. Seems like wishful thinking to me. An uncirculated 69 or even 68 show, maybe?

Hey rockers!!

In response to DIW, and maybe others...........

It's pretty clear that the February, April, and June Fillmore West runs were recorded. Parts are missing, especially from 2/5, 2/8, 4/10 and 4/11. Where are those tapes? Maybe in those banana boxes? I think that TPTB know they have a real windfall there, but they're being very tight lipped about it.............

We do know that OSF has the April 69 Avalon run, although 4/6 remains incomplete. Maybe the Arks are in there too................

There's some late 69s we need big upgrades on, especially Halloween and Crockett. More wishful thinking?????

If you would know strength and patience, welcome the company of trees...........

Rock on,

Doc
In the night of death, hope sees a star, and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing......

Although Dave L claims not to have looked in the banana boxes until after Bear’s passing, I imagine it’s likely that Dick went through them. So if there was a large hoard of missing tapes in there, we would probably know what they were. Hope springs eternal through…

Had to login to see about changing my address after a fourth move in five years, this time just two miles shy of Canada. Until the end of the month, gonna work a few days at the old job 2h45m away. Some awesome music and scenery makes it bearable. Started with 6/10/73 with filler of 3/28/73, then a String Cheese show from Asheville in 2018, currently going to make my way through Pink Floyd The Early Years, some terrifying soundtrack music for the morning to keep it interesting. Anyhoo, checked upon the order, and saw the thumbnail for DaP 52, looks to be an Ostrich Race, but too small to make out details, but lo and behold, on the order page itself, the date and venue are revealed. The setlist for our impending choice:

Alabama Getaway
Greatest Story Ever Told
Dire Wolf
Hell in a Bucket
West L.A. Fadeaway
Me and My Uncle
Mexicali Blues
Althea
C.C. Rider
Might As Well

Help on the Way

No "filler"... ?

So, been finally getting around to trying to create a list for Santa and have added some of your awesome suggestions!
But via oldtimers and crappy notes, I have one more go round of questions, please, if you’d be so kind!
CDs;
First, follow up on Kieth Jarret. We have the Koln concert, and I’m asking Santa for At the Blue Note Box, and I was interested in something I scratched out, but now can’t read lol, about a trio with Jack D and Gary P.
Would love more specific info about an album or any other (easy to find) KJ suggestions.

Folks have suggested Nat King Cole piano. Are there any albums of just him playing, no vocals?

Oscar Peterson: have Night train (love it) and with Stan Getz…What Else?

Finally, for the following artist please suggest the one or maybe two albums you think would be best intro to their work, or if theirs a must have. (Just haven’t had time to do my usual research)…looking for more on the cool mellow side versus loud hard bop…
Art Tatum
Kenny Barron
Brad Mehldau
Fred Hersch: think I ordered Alone at the Van Guard? What else?…

Ok, thanks, and “ Santa” Thanks ya too as she wants to get her shopping over with lol And thanks again, as always, for all the great suggestions previous, and current!
Starting to get a decent collection thanks to y’all ! !

That Blue Note box set is gold standard, literally and figuratively too. Any of the Jarrett Standards with Jack and Gary are worth a listen or three. "Last Dance", KJ with Charlie Haden, then Kenny with Charlie on "Night and The City". There's a lot out there from Fred... and Kenny, "Green Chimneys" going back aways and recently, "The Source".

Gotta admire the man who gets his Xmas list together before Halloween. Especially when he wants jazz!

A couple recs for Oro, based on the ask:

Oscar Peterson: you can almost pick at random from his catalogue, the guy was so consistent, but if I had to rec one, I would say Exclusively for My Friends, which is a set of live recordings done before very small select audiences (hence the title) that includes both trio and solo stuff that's really outstanding.

With Mehldau, I feel like the guy has evolved so much since the early days that I almost can't listen to the older stuff, even though I loved it when it came out. Part of this is that Brad has worked at playing more recent compositions (Beatles, Radiohead, etc, rather than just Great American Songbook stuff), and he's talked about how it requires a completely different approach that's changed his playing. Anyway, I think Day is Done is really good, nice variety of material and approach. Also really like Where Do You Start, with its wonderful version of Hey Joe.

My favorite Art Tatum is Piano Discoveries, which comes from a private party where Art (who was blind, ya know) didn't know he was being recorded and kind of let it all loose more than was typical. I have this on vinyl, but I think they may have come out with an expanded CD version. Which I should probably put on my Xmas list, come to think of it.

Hope this helps!

Inspired by the Wayne Shorter documentary, I'm listening to Weather Report this morning, btw. Haven't heard this record in years, but it's perfect for massaging the neurons back into action after a late night. So much music, so little time!
