Dave's Picks Vol. 51: Scranton Catholic Youth Center, Scranton, PA (4/13/71)

Look out Big Boss Man, Pigpen's on the loose! We're shedding our lovelight on the not-to-be-overlooked Spring 1971 tour with DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51, featuring the complete unreleased show from the SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 AND the 2nd set from the previous night at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA on 4/12/71.

These gems find the original Grateful Dead quintet delivering some of their most inspired, energetic, and tightest performances. There's a dab of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, a splash of AMERICAN BEAUTY, a great foreshadow into what would soon appear on SKULL & ROSES. And you'll need nearly all those fingers (or those toes) because - count 'em - there's eight classic covers ("Mama Tried," "Hard To Handle," and a rare "I Second That Emotion," to name a few) done as only the Dead could do them with Mr. McKernan and his magical harmonica.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51: SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

P.S. We had a little extra room on Disc 2, so please enjoy the final five DP48 bonus tracks to complete 10/24/70, St. Louis, MO.

Phenomenal dueling tenor sax groove, Junior Mance tearing it up on piano, whole band slinging and swinging. Rooted in that same dueling tenor energy Kerouac raved about in On The Road. Great club recording. bluecrow highest rec.

Gotta admire the man who gets his Xmas list together before Halloween. Especially when he wants jazz!

A couple recs for Oro, based on the ask:

Oscar Peterson: you can almost pick at random from his catalogue, the guy was so consistent, but if I had to rec one, I would say Exclusively for My Friends, which is a set of live recordings done before very small select audiences (hence the title) that includes both trio and solo stuff that's really outstanding.

With Mehldau, I feel like the guy has evolved so much since the early days that I almost can't listen to the older stuff, even though I loved it when it came out. Part of this is that Brad has worked at playing more recent compositions (Beatles, Radiohead, etc, rather than just Great American Songbook stuff), and he's talked about how it requires a completely different approach that's changed his playing. Anyway, I think Day is Done is really good, nice variety of material and approach. Also really like Where Do You Start, with its wonderful version of Hey Joe.

My favorite Art Tatum is Piano Discoveries, which comes from a private party where Art (who was blind, ya know) didn't know he was being recorded and kind of let it all loose more than was typical. I have this on vinyl, but I think they may have come out with an expanded CD version. Which I should probably put on my Xmas list, come to think of it.

    Hope this helps!

Inspired by the Wayne Shorter documentary, I'm listening to Weather Report this morning, btw. Haven't heard this record in years, but it's perfect for massaging the neurons back into action after a late night. So much music, so little time!

That Blue Note box set is gold standard, literally and figuratively too. Any of the Jarrett Standards with Jack and Gary are worth a listen or three. "Last Dance", KJ with Charlie Haden, then Kenny with Charlie on "Night and The City". There's a lot out there from Fred... and Kenny, "Green Chimneys" going back aways and recently, "The Source".

But via oldtimers and crappy notes, I have one more go round of questions, please, if you’d be so kind!
    CDs;
First, follow up on Kieth Jarret. We have the Koln concert, and I’m asking Santa for At the Blue Note Box, and I was interested in something I scratched out, but now can’t read lol, about a trio with Jack D and Gary P.
Would love more specific info about an album or any other (easy to find) KJ suggestions.

Folks have suggested Nat King Cole piano. Are there any albums of just him playing, no vocals?

Oscar Peterson: have Night train (love it) and with Stan Getz…What Else?

Finally, for the following artist please suggest the one or maybe two albums you think would be best intro to their work, or if theirs a must have. (Just haven’t had time to do my usual research)…looking for more on the cool mellow side versus loud hard bop…
    Art Tatum
    Kenny Barron
    Brad Mehldau
Fred Hersch: think I ordered Alone at the Van Guard? What else?…

Ok, thanks, and “ Santa” Thanks ya too as she wants to get her shopping over with lol And thanks again, as always, for all the great suggestions previous, and current!

Does anybody remember a daytime show, in which Jerry, screwed up a part of China doll, and said to the audience "wait a minute, that's *ucked up."

Well, for three of the last four years, the last DaP of the year was a later-era show - Vol. 36 was 1987 and then Vols. 40 and 44 were both from 1990. So it seems a reasonable supposition to think he might dip into '91 for Vol. 52.

On the other side of the coin, this year Dave already cracked open 1985 for the first time (Vol 49) - you have to go back to Vols 35 and 36 for the last time he broached two new years (new for the DaP series, that is) in one calendar/subscription year. Would he really end the year with a 1991 release? People have been speculating about 9/26 for some years now, but it never really sounds like informed speculation but just more of "I was there" and "this was the best night of the run" chatter. And ofc one of Dave's first releases when he took over the Dick's series was 9/25, so he surely considered the 26th back then but passed.

My own feeling is that while '91 is the last strong year for the band, the energy did wane as the year went along. I think the March shows, or perhaps Vegas in late April, have more to offer. The August Shoreline shows have some fire to them. But for any of these it's not hard to imagine that Rhino will struggle to shift 25,000 copies. And if they are willing to risk a Fall '91 release, one of the MSG shows (8 still unreleased) seems a safer sales bet than Boston.

But there's still no Dave's from 1989, nor '88. Either would likely sell better than a '91. And I note that the last '76 released (notwithstanding the 2020 box set) was Vol. 28.

Oh well, I'm always wrong when I play the "guess what Dave will release" game. Since I didn't mention it, it will probably be '73.

Not sure about a China Doll - maybe you're thinking of Brokedown Palace at Telluride 8/16/87? Double encore - as they start Brokedown out of Touch It slowly grinds to a halt and Jerry exclaims something to the effect of - "Wait a minute! This is all fucked up! We're in then wrong key! You folks are used to this - oxygen deprivation. Forget that all happened!" And they start Brokedown fresh.

Obeah,

The one thing we know for sure is Dave can be unpredictable at times. Never thought he would release another 71 show for #48 and release this Scranton show two releases later. Who knows, maybe he will release another 71 show for #52.

Would love to see an 88 or 91. It is time.

That's it, thanks. Believe it or not, but I typed in BP first but China somehow came to mind. It's pretty rare to hear Jerry talk much at shows, except for his sweet lyrics.

They muffed the beginning of Brokedown Palace when they played it as an encore when I saw them on 3/27/81, too. Looking in The Taping Compendium to jog my memory, after playing the opening chords, Jerry came in with the wrong verse. To quote the good book -
""Sorry! Premature senility," says Jerry with a grin, before playing and singing it so soulfully that I'm reduced to tears for the second time in one night."

Good points, all, Deadvikes. Dave is indeed unpredictable.

It probably surprises no one to observe that 1977 leads the way in the DaP catalog of releases with 8 shows to date. And it's most welcome to note that 1974 comes second with 6. But 1971 now has 5. All three of those years were represented in the very first year of the DaP series, so empirically it might seem that Dave has a strong affinity for each one.

And yet I also recognize that some of his decisions were governed by what's in the vault (or maybe what was repatriated to the vault!); what is available in a very high-quality recording; what was already released in other series or box sets, and so on. One thing we can probably all agree upon, though, is that Dave truly has one of the most interesting jobs in the world. He's like a real-life version of that Dos Equis guy. Except Canadian and clean-shaven.

Dave has come to a point now where legitimately he could spread the release years around more equally. Being that so much has been released now to date over multiple years and numerous compilations or series. Not to mention big and mini Box Sets!

Well, 1977 is picked close to the bone, so has 1974 which had less shows done overall {Wall O'Sound}. 1976 has only half a years worth of shows, and only 3 have been Dave's releases so far {1976 is also a first year Dave's Picks representation}. 1972 still has some early springtime shows {Academy of Music} remaining before the Big {Massively released} Europe tour, and then after getting back stateside there's quite a bunch left during the midsummer to autumn and winter `72. The years 1973 & 1978 still have much shows left each for their year as a whole, with also some major variations in set lists and style during said years. Only 1973 has a big chuck gone, the summer shows.

So all that said, on any given year now, Dave could release at least one, maybe two Kieth & Donna era shows, {pre & post hiatus} then at least one, maybe two Brent era shows, {For one show pick from 1984~`86, with two shows pick from {1979~`83} & {1987~1990}.
That leaves room for either a Pig era show or a Vince & Bruce era pick, maybe both depending on how many Brent or Keith & Donna shows got done for that year.

This is the good math!

P.S. Gimme your bets for Dave's Pick #52! He already hinted that it would be a post Brent 1990s show. My money's on Nassau 3/27/91, too many unique aspects to pass on.

I actually had a post extolling the next night, Thursday 2/21/91. No Hornsby at this run, but it showed what Vince could do. Good songs for him on Thurs- Franklin's, Memphis, PITB, Eyes. It has the last (to my knowledge) Eyes that was played AFTER Space. Decently long show, too - it would require 3 discs but there would be room for filler, so some of that 2/20 show could sneak on. Either way, whether 2/20 or 2/21 is the main attraction, it's worth pointing out the massive bust-out from 2/19 - New Speedway. That song was last played 20+ years prior - on no less of a date than 9/20/70 at the Fillmore East :)

BUT - as Deadvikes noted, if we've got a consensus for '91, it means Dave isn't looking in this direction. As well, I wouldn't say Feb includes any of the top 5 shows of that year, so if Dave is going to break the seal on 1991, he'd prob look elsewhere. I'd love to be wrong, though - I think Feb '91 punches above its weight.

So if there is a 1991 show on the horizon, I'd have to suspect it would include Bruce since he really gave the band's sound a massive, distinctive kick starting with his sit-in stint later in '91.

But the mention of 2/21/91 indeed perked my ears, as I am quite familiar with this show and it is pretty fuckin awesome despite no Bruce. From the the H>S >F opener, to the Playin>UJ>Terrapin and as previously suspected, the last time Eyes of the World ever came out of space in the 2nd set - that's a VERY COOL moment. I'd be down with this show hitting the streets, but would also love a light shined on Ole Brucey. It's overdue!

Still waitin' on the 78 box, perhaps today will be the day.

Be Well People!

Just wondering, haven't listened since the late 1990's. I remember having two audiences I downloaded off of archive.

Remember I enjoyed them both. Need to find what computer that is on to listen again sometime.

15 years so far.

6-8-80, the (un)official 15th anniversary shows at Folsom was a good one. Had to travel to the front range but well worth the trip. Picked up an ounce or two to take back to Gunnison. Opening strong with UJB>Playin'>UJB and a Samson mid 1st set followed by Brent's Easy To Love You. Ran into friends who had GA tickets and tried to go down to the field with them but the "ushers" (read security) were numerous and making us show our tickets, so they hung with me for a while during set break. My memory of the show was Jerry was great but Brent seemed to be my focus that day as I was close and on his side of the stage. Really had come into his own by then. The drummers were exceptional too. Open air but good weather so the sound was good using one end of the stadium. Alabama/Brokedown encores! I remember being sad it was over but glad I was heading back to the mountains.
Thanks and Cheers

I traveled to Boulder for these shows also. My only time at Folsom Field, although I considered catching D&Co there during their final tour. I was there alone and my main memory inside was being in the stands both days and enjoying the shows. It was fine weather as I recall. I smuggled in taping gear and taped from the seats. My early taping days, obviously.

I keep forgetting that it wasn't till '84 that the taping section was allowed.

The audience tapes I had were great stereo so guessing, without going back and listening, that the taper may have been on field FOB. May have been the MotB group.

Wonder with ushers being so tight, and GD having "take a step back issues" for many years at this point, and having the Who incident in Cincy being so fresh, whether the facility or even GD asked to keep field to designated ticket holders. If that was the case I am guessing they only let 20,000 or so on the field.??

Ticket ($12.00, lol) says sec.11, row 29, seat 20 which was on the right side of the stage just above the field. Pretty close with a good view of Brent. But there were only a few stairs down to the field and those were guarded. Would GA have cost more? I likely had to get mine from a local record store in Gunnison as I did not ever do mail order. For the '78 shows I think we went to a local bar in Ft. Collins in the morning hours where they had the ticket machines set up. Maybe early ticketmaster? In '79 I think we went to a local dept. store for the ticketmaster.

I agree, I was guessing (wrongly, again) that it would be a 1990 show, maybe 1991 (but not much precedent for it). Admittedly 1983 was never a go-to for me, but since DaP27, then 39 and In and Out of the Garden '83 shows, it has shown me the ignorance of my ways. Super excited for another 1983 show. Just hoping a real surprise for the next DaP...such as a 1969 or earlier or 1990 or later show.

I seldomly go to the store history, I never have luck finding what I'm looking for (or can't even get in), but I did this time and there was 9/11/83.

Hopefully will sound better than what I have in stock. Copy I have is "thin", clear vocals, bass is in other room somewhere :-).

Sidenote - Just got Joni Mitchell's archive 4 in. If you hate when the dead break a show up on to multiple disc, well this joni release brought that to a new level. They had "shows" in no order, I had to go to "setlist" to find show order and reconstruct.

Good news, which I love. Ordered from Amaz, got it day of release, free shipping AND just got a 20 dollar rebate because of price drop! The official sites NEVER seem to do this.

Also, can there really be any Joni left to put out? :-)

Don't know how I missed the Nat King Cole in Chicago on blue note cd, I got the vinyl on the shelf, but apparently didn't get the cd's!?! They're coming today!

Some wild "into's" when you mix Nat and Dead in same playlist! Just had Frim Fran Sause -> Wang Dang Doodle.

Charles in Charge - I've been much the same way with 1983. Just not a go-to. When my hand hovers over the first half of the 1980s, it either backs to 1980-1981 or it veers to 1984-1985. And it's been like this for decades. I know there are lots of evangelists for '82-'83 but somehow I've just struggled to find the magic.

But Dave's 27 really did help, that's a fine show. I love the first set and I especially love the second half of Set II. So I'm fired up for this pick bc the word on the street has always been that Santa Fe heard some great music. I've never heard a note of either show so this will be all new to me.

It's just occurred to me, this seems quite a strange venue for The Dead to have played. Especially in the light of some of their statements about how the place they played impacted on what they played. I wonder if that was the case here, and if so, in what way?
