Amazing last night on the webcast. Just want to bolster Jimbo's comment on how good Phil's bass sounded. This was much better than I expected - I hope they release this. I guess I didn't expect the long instrumental passages in an acoustic environment. Warm and smooth is how I would describe it. Admittedly, I only heard a few songs from the 2ND set (Playing in the Band, Dark Star, The Wheel). I was thinking it would be more akin to the 1970 acoustic sets where the arrangements were compact. Yeah sign me up for this. Truly a fresh approach, and different enough that I could sneak this on in the background during meals for a while, before anyone noticed. On a different note, Bird Song from Watkins Glen is fantastic. Lemieux ought to be issued a citation for not releasing a '73 Bird Song. The Mississippi Half Step is no slouch either, although there's a big hole in the coda (but there's some great piano throughout the main part). I've listened to the famous soundcheck jam that they released on So Many Roads a million times, but only recently tuned into the regular set.

I'm not as conversant as many of you on musical subtlety, nuance and theory, but I know a lush, vibrant musical forest when I'm trekking thru one. And this particular forest's conjured by only 2 or 3 players. Yesterday I kept coming back to the first Bobby & Phil Duo Show for another listen – amazing playing and virtuoso musicianship. For once BOTH Phil and Bob are high in the mix! Nice background for dinner to be sure, but there're some unexpected side trips and explorations to be discovered from more contemplative vantages. This tour seems to be adding a fresh perspective to all the amazing GD (and post-GD dead permutations) we're so lucky to have. The stripped down craftsmanship and passion for the music make this trip sparkle. Couldn't stream, so still looking forward to hearing last night's B&P show (w/ Trey? Really?) later today (with "Replay" at the ready). Onward. Still miss Jerry. . .

That was great, had my younger siblings and their families over for dinner and played the first set on the stereo. Sat down and watched the glorious second set with my 5 year old after dinner. What a great show. It was easy to get on nugsnet this am, 16$ for the show. Also if any of you use facebook, look into the group "sunday night Dead show" It's pretty much the only reason I look at facebook; videoes and streams abound. Separately I love John Coltrane. A Love Supreme is a masterpiece. Got a reissue copy a few years ago that has the only known live performance of the suite as the bonus content. If I'm not mistaken it was lost recording that turned up in a French archive, maybe was royal archive, even. Need to dig that out.

The scene is certainly a spoof of the movie Seven. Also, the literal answer to the question "what's in the box" was bacon. Aka fried strips of pork bellies. From a Pig. So a seven disc Pig focused box? Or A Pig focused box from July, 70? July 71? Some combination thereof?

The 50th anniversary of the first year they started recording with consistency. Also worth pondering is that Dave's Picks 25 was recorded by Bear and the final part of the show never circulated, which seems to indicate the final part of the show was not in the vault. A pig box containing what exists of seven shows?

There was a great documentary on television last week about a musical movement called minimalism, of which I know nothing. One of the central artists featured was Terry Riley, and they played a segment from an amazing sounding composition of his called "A Rainbow in Curved Air", which I have duly ordered on cd. And this got me to thinking about Seastones, which seems to have been the nearest the Dead got to playing this type of music. I bought a second hand vinyl copy decades ago, but it was always a bit scratched, so I never played it much. I looked to see if it was still available, and it doesn't seem to be-except at inflated prices. So I thought that would make a great reissue. Something, a bit different, but like the Dylan/Dead box suggested, still within the far reaches of the Dead world.

My brother had copies of "In C" and "A Rainbow in Curved Air" back in the late '60s. I couldn't really get in them then and haven't heard either of them since. More accessible was the John Cale & Terry Riley album "Church of Anthrax" from 1971. I still can't get into Seastones despite having witnessed it live in 1974 at Ally Pally whilst under the influence of a surfeit of space cake.

The box is a 50th Anthem box. The dead in 1968 were a 7 headed monster. Lots of pig - plenty of grease

The show gets off to a fast and furious start with a strong Bertha, which had become a near-nightly staple in the repertoire since it was introduced in February 1971. The rest of the first set continues to rock all the way through. The Mr. Charlie, Sugaree, and Casey Jones stand out particularly, but every tune is a fabulous rendition. The first Black Throated Wind makes an appearance in that first set, proving to be an excellent little tune from the very beginning. Because of time constraints, the first set is a good deal longer than the second, and the band never really enters into interstellar jamming territory in either set. What we get instead in the second half is a really heady Good Lovin’ with some extended Pig rapping and a Mind Left Body jam. Then a very fun, but far too short, NFA> GDTRB> NFA comes forth to end the set. Finally, a blistering One More Saturday Night serves as the encore.

I am not sure what I would have made of Seastones live. I like the idea of it, but the actuality may have been another matter. I did find the album a bit hard going, the few times I heard it. I'd still be interested in hearing a clean copy, though. Electronic music generally has always intrigued me. I think the first album I heard was Faust Tapes, which was one of the first releases on Virgin records in 1974, I believe. Like Gong's Camemebert Electrique, released on the same label at the same time, it only cost 0.48p, and consequently seemed to be owned by teen freaks everywhere. After that I got into more German electronic bands-Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul 2, Can, Kraftwerk etc. From there I went to Stockhausen, which I found nigh on impossible to get into. But both the Terry Riley albums you mentioned were sampled on the documentary I watched and do seem attractive to me.

This performance is really cool. I am under the impression this show is part of some of the returned reels. Some interesting banter in between songs about their visit to Ohio in maybe 1968 ? It's been a little while since I heard , but I think it occurs before "Friend of the Devil" I hope this show is released. 1970 has the X-factor

He is indeed the Riley in Baba O'Riley. Pete Townshend was into his records at the time, and was influenced by the whole tape-loop rhythm concept; this gave birth to the mesmerizing pattern of the ARP synthesizer in Baba O'Riley (aka Teenage Wasteland). He was also into Meher Baba, who has nothing to do with electronic music, but somehow made it into the song title.

Well.. I learned something new today. I guess this provides a little context. Regarding returned reels.. I hope you are correct, mbarilla. I had heard the latest batch of returned reels started in '71, but I don't think it's in their best interest to reveal their hand. We also have the Owsley factor and the Mountain Girl factor.. Tomorrow never knows.

12/26/79, Oakland Auditorium Arena is the noon show on SiriusXM. I have not listened to it in quite some time.. I am well into the first set. I can't think of a show I 1979 like more than this. Rock on Dicks Picks 5! A must have show and an exquisite recording.

Superb show. As is 12/28/79. As is every other show I have heard from the last few months of 1979.

Then I might suggest folks take in 8-12 and 8-13, at Red Rocks and McNichols Arena, respectively. Both shows blazed mightily. There was a third night, but as with other examples of consecutive days of lysergic activity (thanks Purple Dragon), I have no memory of Night 3 other than we were a tad crisp. But the first two nights remain quite vivid and I've dropped those stories in the past. If the upcoming box continues to flog the returned tapes and they move into '76, I won't be shooting off any fireworks. But it'll be what it'll be -- and what that is, I'm anxious to see.

Unless Bolo's "clue" is just his way of ribbing everyone for trying to guess the next box set. Which is what I'm inclined to believe, even if I'm ultimately wrong. Because it's much more fun than giving an actual clue. And more devious. Especially considering how many people are probably trying to guess in an enhanced state.

I am wandering through Europe 72, getting distracted at every turn. Which is the way I like it. It will be many, many months before I get to the last show. But this morning I landed in Bremen on 21st April. Its a one set show played in a TV studio, which probably explains why it tends to slip under the radar. But there is some stellar playing going on here. No less then two complete Playin's-each clocking in at around the 10 minute mark, and both bursting at the seams with explorative jams. The highlight, though is the Truckin' into The Other One. An amazing jam, especially considering the circumstances in which it was played. According to the sleeve notes, the whole set was filmed for Beat Club, although I think only One More Saturday Night was shown. I am not a great fan of films of the band, but if there is any live footage crying to be released, then this is surely it.

One of my favorites from the tour. I admit, however, if there's a chink in my Europe 72 armor, it's in The Other One. I just don't know them that well. I gravitate towards the ones that are split up, with the opening night being high on my list. There is a great El Paso and Wharf Rat in there. The 8-minute section before Wharf rat is fantastic. The bit before El Paso may be fantastic to, I just don't remember it. I also like the May 16th performance at Luxembourg. And the Hundred Year Hall version is also terrific. One of these days I'm going to listen to them all in order, until I have some sort of mental ranking. Just going to put the whole playlist on repeat. Of course now I have to turn off what I was listening to and go listen to Bremen. Putting the Sleeper of '78 on ice for of the moment....

It had been a while since I had listened to E'72- I went primal there for a while going through FW Box and then DP16- but I put on 4/7/72 today and TOO just stared up as I read your post, KeithFan. It really is a great version and a great show. What a way to kick off that legendary tour. The boys were firing on all cylinders from the get-go. I think I may be sucked into the E'72 rabbit hole for the foreseeable future.

Does anybody know if Betty recorded anything else that year besides 12/26?
