During the mid-1970s, the Grateful Dead saga was unfolding like a Greek classic. The Sisyphean Wall Of Sound had nearly broken the band. From it spawned a Medusa head of countless side projects, all deliciously fruitful but woefully not the same as the whole. The chorus lay in wait, pondering the reemergence of their heroes, and wondering if "THE LAST ONE" had really been it...

But in early 1976, Apollonian light and healing would shine upon our intrepid wanderers once again. No more epic battles for the people with cops and lines and tightness, the Dead would return triumphant in smallness, playing intimate theaters and renting equipment along the way. No more ticket scams and greedy promoters, they'd give back with first ever mail-order ticket program, one that had a few kinks to work out but eventually served the fans well.

Musically, June 1976 signaled a Golden Age of harmony and prosperity for the Dead. It marked an Odysseusian-like return for Mickey Hart. Donna Jean was in lock-step with the sirens' call. Jerry and Bob delivered orphic delight with solo musings like "Mission In The Rain" (the only tour they ever played it on), "The Wheel," and "Cassidy," emboldened by group effort. There was fresh repertoire from Blues For Allah, breathing new life to the Dead's continually morphing sound - as Weir once said of the '76 tour, they wanted to play "a little bit of all of it." Old favorites were re-envisioned with cascading tempos and unique sequencing, making the crowd question if they'd ever heard these songs before. And there was comfort and joy in the familiarity of watching the band make it up as they went along. By all means, it was clear that the bacchanalia of live Dead would reign on.

And now the revelry from this epoch, evidenced by the near-studio quality sound captured on two-track live recordings by Betty Cantor-Jackson, lives on, bolstered by Jeffrey Norman's HDCD mastering. It's housed for posterity in a handsome box featuring original art work by Justin Helton. It’s documented in liners by Jesse Jarnow and photos by Grant Gouldon. And it’s ready for a spot on your shelf.

Lot's of great ideas for box sets. . ..

And I would buy all of them! Watkins Glen complete with the other bands and sound check would be, if, I had to pick only one, would be The One! Yet RFK 73 would be a runner up.

I still daydream about Radio City/Warfield tapes being rediscovered.

Hello Deadland!

Hope everyone is doing well, I'm just hanging out digging on this box. It's a bit of slow process when no one in the house but me "gets it". "Theres 5 versions of the same song in 5 shows?" Haha. Also listening to some anniversary shows, love me some 4/2/73. And just to switch it up I've been listening to the island tour. I was lucky enough to hit the first 2. If u want some deep outer space, I highly recommend the twist from 4/2, man that version takes me places! Stay safe, and keep washing those hands!!

Just give me the remaining Dark Star shows Plangentized ASAP. Give it its own series. Or make a big box set. Or periodic mini box sets. The rest will take care of itself.

I'm also on board with the Watkins Glen release that was mentioned. And the RFK '73 double dose. I'm also good with the April '71 box set idea - and make sure it's engineered to sound exactly like Ladies and Gentlemen. Might as well mention Port Chester '71 since the wish list is out.

At the moment I'm listening to Dave's Picks 17, Selland July '74. Keith sounds so good on Weather Report Suite. I've been a big fan of this show since it arrived on my doorstep. I wish Bertha wasn't fucked up. If I had my old easy CD Creator software, I'd be able to patch it by overdubbing the opening chords. Anyway....It's been a few months since I put this one on. Now I'm wondering if I like it better than the 1974 shows in the Pacific Northwest box set. I may need to do a side-by-side comparison. I'm also experiencing some runner's high at the moment, and that never hurts a show. I know it's not a popular choice but it just catches me the right way. I wonder why they didn't call "Jam" "Spanish Jam". Blah blah, blah blah blah blah.....

Ironically Carlo, it was a Sunshine Daydream sitting on a Barnes & Noble shelf that converted me from being a casual fan to holding a PhD in Europe '72. Ah yes, that fateful day in B & N. I've barely put another band on since April 2014. Something weird happened in January of this year and I started listening to the Best of INXS. But by February the spell had passed and I'm right back on the bus with Cowboy Neil at the wheel.

I agree with you on what you are saying but general releases dont do well in brick and mortar stores. I have seen a sunshine daydream veneta at barnes and noble sit there for months with no buyers. Same with a few other that dont sell (Cornell and long strange trip vid.). Its weird.

I read way back that the GD and ABB had put together a box of the best from 6/9, 6/10, 7/27 and 7/28, but nixed it. Of course, it's harder to do those deals with two bands and sets of heirs. But why do you say this of 6/10?

Just curious. Have you read something about the tape or other issue?

Great points all, and though I agree on saturation and absorption issues, I think they could step up production if they wanted to. Yes the production team are truly wizards, but at the same time it’s not rocket science. If they have the tapes and know their good to use, the rest is doable.
Personally, I think adding one or 2 more Dave’s a year, and doing say one “bigger” box i.e., June 76, and one smaller i.e., RFK 89 a year, if staggered properly, and marketed properly (like dont release 2 competing sets in a year?and price accordingly) could work.
Maybe not 2 “boxes” every year, maybe years like this with 2 50th anniversary albums you don’t do 2, but say years that don’t have a 50th release get another release/box/from the vault? Whatever....but something above and beyond say a Dave’s or Dicks type release.
Sure you might not be able to do 15 or 20K units, but you could make up for with the additional releases...
I mean I agree with all you have said, except at current pace they could run out of hardcore absolute buyers so that by 20 years they can’t even sell out a 5K box run? Just a thought.....
As far as the rest, I get what Jim’s saying about the quality and easy accessibility issues, but I think if they could figure out some kind of economy of scale to make it work, so that you could at least get out some of the later source shows, enough folks would want at least certain shows, say ones they were at, or those that were really stand outs.
So if they could find a way to digitize and improve quality enough, with added packaging/marketing, to be enough of a step up above the online stuff, while of course turning at least a fair profit, it might work?
I think there’s enough low tech geezers like me that would totally buy enough shows overall to do this. I’m not going to spend time I don’t have downloading tons of stuff via my horrible net service. But I would buy say a few dozen ala carte releases like a Road trips or even the download series quality, but on a disc. (I’m talking full or most of shows here, not chop jobs).
With everything digitized, using a low budget universal packaging system you could do say pre-sale order only.
Like “next month only, order your 7/13/84” ...you get your money up front, and you don’t have to guess about run numbers. You take your universal packaging, change the labeling slightly, and you sell however many so that at least it will pay for itself. Might not be huge money maker, but you repay the fans for 50 plus years of ridiculous spending, plus in some ways you keep those interested that aren’t hardcore, or all ready feel they have plenty of older shows.
Just look at how well the response was for the Giants box? No ones going to argue that any of this would compare or replace say FW69 or E72 leval stuff, but I would argue that there is potentially enough interest for late generation folks who aren’t going to drop $200 for a 1970 Beatty box, but who would definetly buy the 3 or 4 ala carte shows they were at from later years. 4 or 5 $30 purchases, along with added shipping profits, by 10s of thousands of buyers overall, could equal or surpass the high production limited profits of said $200 box.
Sorry, rambling, I guess I’m trying to say their ignoring a potentially large audience by only offering product they don’t want!
Obviously it means doing this somehow affordably/profitably, and I also think you have to do it sooner than later because I agree with Kid that someday it will all be upgraded and availabilie via download, but will there still be a economically viable market by then? Who knows, hell, no way I thought 30 years ago the Dead would still be this relevant now....
Anyway, just a thought, and interesting stuff for sure!

Got it! Delivery scheduled for Friday! Great news and it has left the building.
Interesting to me anyway that the box is shipping from CA. Maybe they have dissolved that relationship with the warehouse in TN.

All the stuff I need to get done and I spend two hours yesterday going through cd's.

I was looking at the Real Gone DP29 page and went to my collection to check it out and it was some other show! After much scratching and wtf-ing, I dug all 4 banker boxes out of the closet and started looking thru them all. After a couple of hours realized I was looking at the Dave's Pick folder and NOT the Dick's Pick folder. D'OH!!!

Oh well, back to the head job on my brothers truck.

Today would have been a good day for hospitality workers across the USA, Canada, and Ireland (elsewhere of course). Instead many of those workers are unemployed. I'll do my part to help them out when this thing blows over.

Quarantine - Day 2

Dear Diary,

Things have taken an unexpected turn for the worse here. Despite being well stocked with the absolute essentials, a note of despair has crept into the proceedings. I "awoke" to find a substantial portion of the rum stock missing, and a solitary bottle of hand sanitizer in the icebox behind two heads of cabbage and a grapefruit. I immediately deposited the sanitizer into the bathtub, cursing my own careless oversight.

It was bit of a haze, but somewhere around the 13th or 14th mai tai - I believe in the middle of When Push Comes to Shove of that lovely '87 Giants Stadium show - I only remember fragments, but there was a hockey jersey being pulled over my head and someone was telling one-liners about my mother. I lunged towards the intruder, mai tai in hand, but age and idleness may have finally had their best of me. I was lying there on the floor, my bearskin cap barely perched atop my head, my only solace was the wad of toliet paper affixed to the ruffian's heel as he wheeled and flashed a wicked grin, pulling a sack of my hard-won 4-ply behind him. When i came to I was wearing a vegas jersey and my mai tai had spilled over the horribly rendered logo.

As things stand my stocks have been severely damaged, but hope remains. We're just staring this journey, and having more hand sanitizer and toliet paper out amongst the proletariat must only serve the greater good of mankind.

A hopeful message has arrived in the post and the wells fargo wagon is now expected to bring round a package any day containing a much anticipated boxed set. To rebalance my humors i put on 7-5-78. Thats all for now.

This town...Ghost town

I've just had notification that Faust's gig in London on 8th May has been postponed. I'm waiting now for similar notifications concerning shows by Live Dead 69, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets and the North Mississippi Allstars. Hopefully we will be back to normal by October when we have Deep Purple/Blue Oyster Cult and Patti Smith.

But if you are healthy and not running out of money, social isolation isn't actually that bad. Just needs a change of gears.

I’m in real quarantine

I have what appears to be a standard wintertime cold/flu (been sneezing for 2 weeks, so I knew it was coming). I don’t currently meet the criteria for Covid-19, but what bad timing.
Now I’m really not allowed out in public.

I slept for 12 hours last night, and woke up to dog puke on the floor.....but he’s good now, just ate a bowl of dog food. Now he’s harassing me to play outside but it’s cloudy and wet outside. This wouldn’t be all bad if it was sunny and warm, I could kick back in the sun and roast coffee beans.

Fired up some quarantine tunes - 5-19-74 vinyl.

Looks like my Box has departed Los Angeles with arrival scheduled for the 20th. Hope it gets here early, I have a lot of spare time on my hands.

Fortunately I went to Sam’s Club about a month ago and have a pretty good stash of TP, and went to the grocery store on Friday and got 2 gallons of milk with 14 days to go on the date.

Was going to stop at the beer store yesterday but there was a line in the parking lot because they were limiting how many people could be in the store at a time.
I have 2 cases of various barrel aged stouts aging in the basement, and about 2 cases of various IPA’s, but really wanted another case.
As a back up plan there is vodka, tequila, and rum (not yours Slow Dog) in the cabinet. My neighbor said he has 8 cases of beer so he could help me out if needed.

...also just got back from a beer store run. Seeing stuff about some cities closing down completely, i wanted to ensure I had the most important items ha ha. No, seriously. I'd cry if all of the beer stores were suddenly shuttered - it's not that far off people. Seeing mentions of potentially June/July/August until this darkness gives? That seems crazy at this point, but altruism is necessary and I will do my part.

Bring on the box - similar to others, I am seeing a Friday delivery. Will make for a solid weekend of entrenchment.
Hope folks are faring well and have a quasi-positive outlook.

Shipping notice

I received my shipping notice yesterday. Delivery due next Monday 3/23. My birthday is 3/22 so what better present could there be? I was surprised to see that it was going to take 1 week when usually it is 2-3 days. But when I used the UPS tracking no. I saw it is coming from Cali so that explains it. I am very happy that hopefully they will now ship everything from Cali and control things better. After all, they could not have gotten much worse then the past couple of year's cluster fucks! I am VERY pumped for this one. Should be awesome.

Had homemade chicken soup for lunch.

Not sure if lots of vitamin C actually works, but for those who think it does, here’s my recipe for that remedy:

Juice 2 whole limes into a glass
Add a pinch of Kosher salt
Add tequila, triple sec, water, ice, stir well.

Haven’t made one today, but I might later. That recipe also helps soothe a sore throat.

Yesterday I read that some micro distilleries are mixing their alcohol with aloe and giving away free hand sanitizer. Paying it forward there.

I made it through 5-19-74 vinyl which was enjoyable, but having to get up and flip sides really breaks the flow of the show. Going back to digital, haven’t picked a show yet.

Did 3-18-71 the other day and it was awesome. I played that a lot when 30 Trips first came out, but hadn’t played it in quite a while and forgot how great it is. Really makes me look forward to the 71 Doc Box that we will hopefully will get next year, if not this fall.

Outer Shipping Box

I don't mean to sound paranoid, but I'll be wiping down the outer shipping box with a Clorox disinfectant wipe before handling...and then washing my hands very well afterwards. Think of how many people have handled the Boxes. Others may want to do the same...especially those with underlying health issues. One epidemiologist on MSNBC stated Corona can live on cardboard for 4 days...or longer? (I don't know why they tested it with cardboard).

I know we're having all sorts of info being thrown at us, but better safe than sorry.

I think the cdc tests certain surfaces like porous, painted, aluminum, non-porous, dermal, and the like to make sure they have a guide to let the public know how long viruses live on these surfaces. It's a good idea you mentioned this because it could happen this way. The postal service and other entities have a notice on their sites that precautions have been taken to make sure the employees use latex gloves when handling mail and parcels. They also said the warehouses of companies are sanitized and treated with the proper chemicals. Peace.

Thanks for the info. I'm happy to hear The USPS is taking precautions. The epidemiologist did mention how long it could live on other surfaces, but cardboard stuck out to me since I was in shipping/receiving for 25 years and have handled tens of thousands of boxes.

Kansas is the 1st state to officially end the school year. Unfortunately I think there's far more coming...and with that I'll conclude my Corona conversation.

....made a serious effort to listen to every Spring 90 and TOO on their anniversaries last year. Did pretty good. But that was the 29th anniversary. 2020 is the 30th, and now I don't really want to chase that golden ring because a fresh box is days away.
