Dave's Picks Vol. 51: Scranton Catholic Youth Center, Scranton, PA (4/13/71)

Look out Big Boss Man, Pigpen's on the loose! We're shedding our lovelight on the not-to-be-overlooked Spring 1971 tour with DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51, featuring the complete unreleased show from the SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 AND the 2nd set from the previous night at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA on 4/12/71.

These gems find the original Grateful Dead quintet delivering some of their most inspired, energetic, and tightest performances. There's a dab of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, a splash of AMERICAN BEAUTY, a great foreshadow into what would soon appear on SKULL & ROSES. And you'll need nearly all those fingers (or those toes) because - count 'em - there's eight classic covers ("Mama Tried," "Hard To Handle," and a rare "I Second That Emotion," to name a few) done as only the Dead could do them with Mr. McKernan and his magical harmonica.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51: SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

P.S. We had a little extra room on Disc 2, so please enjoy the final five DP48 bonus tracks to complete 10/24/70, St. Louis, MO.

Phenomenal dueling tenor sax groove, Junior Mance tearing it up on piano, whole band slinging and swinging. Rooted in that same dueling tenor energy Kerouac raved about in On The Road. Great club recording. bluecrow highest rec.

Gotta admire the man who gets his Xmas list together before Halloween. Especially when he wants jazz!

A couple recs for Oro, based on the ask:

Oscar Peterson: you can almost pick at random from his catalogue, the guy was so consistent, but if I had to rec one, I would say Exclusively for My Friends, which is a set of live recordings done before very small select audiences (hence the title) that includes both trio and solo stuff that's really outstanding.

With Mehldau, I feel like the guy has evolved so much since the early days that I almost can't listen to the older stuff, even though I loved it when it came out. Part of this is that Brad has worked at playing more recent compositions (Beatles, Radiohead, etc, rather than just Great American Songbook stuff), and he's talked about how it requires a completely different approach that's changed his playing. Anyway, I think Day is Done is really good, nice variety of material and approach. Also really like Where Do You Start, with its wonderful version of Hey Joe.

My favorite Art Tatum is Piano Discoveries, which comes from a private party where Art (who was blind, ya know) didn't know he was being recorded and kind of let it all loose more than was typical. I have this on vinyl, but I think they may have come out with an expanded CD version. Which I should probably put on my Xmas list, come to think of it.

    Hope this helps!

Inspired by the Wayne Shorter documentary, I'm listening to Weather Report this morning, btw. Haven't heard this record in years, but it's perfect for massaging the neurons back into action after a late night. So much music, so little time!

That Blue Note box set is gold standard, literally and figuratively too. Any of the Jarrett Standards with Jack and Gary are worth a listen or three. "Last Dance", KJ with Charlie Haden, then Kenny with Charlie on "Night and The City". There's a lot out there from Fred... and Kenny, "Green Chimneys" going back aways and recently, "The Source".

So, been finally getting around to trying to create a list for Santa and have added some of your awesome suggestions!
But via oldtimers and crappy notes, I have one more go round of questions, please, if you’d be so kind!
    CDs;
First, follow up on Kieth Jarret. We have the Koln concert, and I’m asking Santa for At the Blue Note Box, and I was interested in something I scratched out, but now can’t read lol, about a trio with Jack D and Gary P.
Would love more specific info about an album or any other (easy to find) KJ suggestions.

Folks have suggested Nat King Cole piano. Are there any albums of just him playing, no vocals?

Oscar Peterson: have Night train (love it) and with Stan Getz…What Else?

Finally, for the following artist please suggest the one or maybe two albums you think would be best intro to their work, or if theirs a must have. (Just haven’t had time to do my usual research)…looking for more on the cool mellow side versus loud hard bop…
    Art Tatum
    Kenny Barron
    Brad Mehldau
Fred Hersch: think I ordered Alone at the Van Guard? What else?…

Ok, thanks, and “ Santa” Thanks ya too as she wants to get her shopping over with lol And thanks again, as always, for all the great suggestions previous, and current!
Starting to get a decent collection thanks to y’all ! !

One of the best. I am half way through watching a great documentary that was shown on T.V. recently called "Elvis : The Searcher". Shown in 2 parts, it's about 4 hours long. Highly recommended.

I’ll echo the comments on those shows. I’d throw in The Andy Griffith show as well. I’ve seen them all countless times and they’re still funny! Add in the ones with The Dillards as the Darling Family, and you get some great bluegrass also.

Not a classic, but I’m sure some of you are familiar with the Showtime series Billions. If so, you probably have caught some of the many blatant GD quotes and references. I mean they quote Big Steve FFS!
Also, one of the main characters is named Taylor Mason, while a prolific taper was named Mason Taylor…coincidence or…?
For some reason lol, this has been nagging at me, subconsciously low lol, but never the less I’ve wondered who or what the connection is between the boys and this show?
So, anyone have any easy answers?

‘All in the family’ was based on the UK tv series ‘Til death Us Do Part’. This is a series that can’t be shown anymore given the antisemitic and racist language. On the plus side it did give rise to a the track ‘Alternate Title’ by The Monkees. Written by Mickey Dolenz after he saw the show in the UK. The title was changed when the PTB realise what ‘Randy Scouse Git’ meant.

I never knew about that Monkees connection. A great single.

Wasn't the central character of Tl Death Us Do Part - Alf Garnett, played by Warren Mitchell, originally supposed to be a somewhat ludicrous figure, to be mocked for his racist and sexist language ? I think what happened was that a fair proportion of society got the wrong end of the stick, and actually thought he was talking a lot of sense !
It happens with politicians, too.

Dennis - Break out the wife’s credit card! Preorders coming up:
- Joni - Archives Vol 4 (early October)
- Gregg Allman Band - September 20
- Mahavishnu Orchestra - “Live from Berkeley 1972” - September 13
(I think the latter two were originally radio broadcasts)
- Mike Stern - new studio album September 13
A funny quote I just read on Stern from an interview Miles Davis gave in 1986:
“Like a lot of guys, they play too many fucking notes. Like Mike Stern. I tell him all the time, I said ‘Mike, you need to go to Notes Anonymous’”
(Talking Jazz, by Ben Sidran)
Last 5:
Bela Fleck & Zakir Hussain - As We Speak
Bela Fleck & Chick Corea - Remembrance
Roy Hargrove Quintet - Earfood
Ambrose Akinmusire - Owl Song*
GOGD - Dave’s 15 Nashville April ‘78 (one of my favourite Dave’s Picks)
* - with Bill Frisell, and this is about his best support playing I have ever heard

I had already ordered the Joni (cd & LP).

I have the other 3 box sets she's released, or is it more? In any event I had to complete the Joni Boxes.

I won't be buying the other two,,, one has to draw a line.

Great Miles quote. Saw him once on some talking head show and they asked about Prince.

He said something to the effect, man has a lot of words, wish I had that many.

Wayne Shorter in last night, newest blue note release, Celebration - Volume 1. Got both mediums cd & lp. From the title guess I'll be getting Volume 2!

Added thought - I'm no expert, but, I always thought Miles album Bitches Brew had a perfect example of minimum note playing on Miles Runs the Voodoo Down. I my mind there's a long dark, almost black jam. Then out of nowhere Miles cuts across the dark with a single long note. Need to relisten, but always loved that piece.

There is so much Miles out there, am still exploring the Plugged Nickel box. Hargrove's Earfood is fine stuff. A certain "to remain nameless" presidential candidate recently noted growing up in a home where she was hearing Miles and Coltrane. Stevie Wonder and Pink, how good was that, too bad they skipped James. Just scored tix Tuesday DSO show Deerfield.

It's interesting listening to Miles Davis when he was playing with Charlie Parker in the mid 1940's. Still a teenager on the earliest tracks. He sounds a bit hesitant and restrained in comparison to C.P. and other trumpet players of the era. I think this was why he was favoured by the great man - a foil rather than a competitor.

Not sure what you're referring to, looked back some pages, see no references to Rex Foundation, and when I visited the site, saw nothing about grants going to crew or anything. So, just curious what you're referring to, assume it's former crew without any retirement, but don't see anything about it.

Check out recent posts
Then four down is Rex Foundation
You won’t see anything at Rex because they don’t have anything to do with this, just supposedly some friend of Harry’s who posted there.
Harry, Kidd and Candace all have gofundmes due to their situations.
Very sad and depressing.
There’s a picture of Kidd with a I need miracle sign that chokes me up, just by thinking about it…
Check it out and make up your own mind…

Edit: ok weird, it’s been removed?
But you can search online if interested…

Dennis - You should write pulp noir fiction.

Strange but true: On March 9, 1974, Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese Imperial Army was the last Japanese soldier from WW 2 to surrender, by turning over his sword to his “captors”, ie - rescuers. He hid in the Philippine jungle for 29 years!
Also on that date, Jerry & Merl played a smokin’ set at the Keystone. Hiroo Onoda was not in attendance, missing a pretty fine show!

I was on a group tour of Hiroshima when a very old Japanese gentleman picked me out of the crowd to give me a private tour. He survived the blast, was about 15 miles out. Ended up spending an hour and a half with him. Have some great pictures of him and surroundings as well. I would have to find my notebook and look up my notes for more detail.

Went around the world on that trip to a bunch of places. Got a picture of me on a camel at Giza, went by myself into the great pyramid. A lot of info on that as my freaky friend should have been there.

Oh yeah, happy birthday, late, to Miss Donna Jean! Thanks for the reminder.

Just read that Steve passed away last night. Author of NeuroTribes - full tilt Deadhead - deep friend of David Crosby. On 8/13/2023, just over a year ago, he posted the following.

"When I die, please don't say I've crossed over to the spirit realm, gone to the Other Side, moved on to a better place, rejoined my ancestors, or any other of those comforting fables. Just selfishly or selflessly use my own impermanence to WAKE UP to your own"

Thank you Steve

Daverock - I think I understand where you're coming from, but to my mind its simply Steve talking about his own passing, no one else's. And his message resonates with me.

VGuy - the deaths of brothers Johnny and Matt Gaudreau is a haunting and sickening tragedy. Unfathomable.

Death Don't Have No Mercy. A double negative I guess it means life has mercy.

Either way, getting plowed by a car while riding a bike is not something you plan for.. you ride your bike (well, hopefully for fun but also) to stay healthy, feel good, and hopefully live a long, fruitful life.

Life is more about expectations than good v. bad. Example.. you get your end of year bonus check and it's a monster, but half as much as you thought it would be. You walk away disappointed. Or at your trial date, you get a six-month jail sentence but expected six years, you are elated, happy days. The first good news yet you are sad. The second terrible news and you want to party like it's 1999.

When I get on my bike I never expect to get plowed.. I can only imagine what their families are going through.

While we are on the topic.. favorite Death Don't Have No Mercy? I need to think about this one.

One of those songs, so haunting and beautiful. I like the 60's versions but was so happy to see it brought back ever so briefly. I got to see it performed once. A lifetime high for me. Was expecting a high time, got a dealth don't have no mercy, expectation exceeded.. happy day.

The version on Live Dead is pretty hard to top, 4/6/69 Avalon Ballroom has a killer version.

Read as a double negative - which I have never done before - it reads more like it's death that has mercy, not life. My favourite version is the one on Live Dead, hands down. Very different from the version I have heard by Gary Davis, which is also stunning.

Bluecrow - yes that's good. It always makes me wonder a bit when someone seems to be 100% sure what happens after we die. In fact, it makes me wonder a bit whenever someone is 100% sure about anything ! They often seem to be trying to convince themselves as much as anyone else.

I'm not having a pop at Steve Silberman, by the way. I have one of his books upstairs somewhere - where I know not. It's not called "Skeleton Keys", though.

Looking forward to hopefully receiving the new box at the end of the month.

So what will Dave do for #52? You never know with Dave. Some of the picks have been head scratchers, to say the least.

I would love to see Dave break into 91. So many good shows in 91. I was listening to 5/11/91 last night and was thinking man, it would be fun to finally have a 91 show released as a Dave's Picks. Will it ever happen. Who knows.

If not 91, how about a show from 82 or 88. Many good shows to pick from and recorded well.

Oh and will they announce the 2024 MUATM?

Hope you all have a good rest of the Labor Day Weekend.

34 years ago I was out at Shoreline to see Garcia & Los Lobos put on a great show. The Garcia portion of the show has been released on dvd , and well worth picking up if you can still get it.

I am happy this show was released. I used to have it on CD-R in the early 2000s as a decent soundboard recording. I was under the impression that this show was 30 to 45 minutes longer, which wasn't in circulation. With this official release, I stand corrected. Excellent show, thanks to the "powers that be" for this release.

SIMON I suppose that it’s possible to lurk without being registered. It does seem silly to log in just to sell items. I’m sure there are lots of sites where selling is the major purpose. This site lets us talk about music etc and to let the PTB know what we think of the items they release and why they should have released something completely different.
