I forgot to give an update on the upgraded shipping for anyone actually interested.

Last year for the HCS box I upgraded the shipping to direct delivery from UPS, (skipping the Post Office) I opted to pay for the whole year, assuming it would cover the Dave's Picks, it does not. So I paid for the year and the Dave's Picks still go to the post office. I guess technically they fall under a different category, which I did not know. To add insult to injury they hit me recently with auto renewal... so yeah, but maybe I'll get the next box a little earlier. This is all a UPS issue and not necessarily a Deadnet issue in case anyone is wondering.

Did anyone else do this?

The penguin is a reference to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and The Igloo was the nickname of the Civic Arena which is where the Pens played until 2010.

50 years ago today - the Dead opened their 1974 Summer tour with this fine show in Fresno; solid first set, closing with a great "playing". 2 set (one-time ?) "Brown-eyed women" to open, and a "Jam - Eyes - China Doll" trio to end the show.. One of the best-sounding WoS-shows, I know.. BW from Copenhagen to all..

I don't remember Bob much at all, maybe caught some re-runs in my teens. The Office seemed okay, but same for me, lasted about 5 episodes. Same with Parks & Rec.
The best comedy series I've ever seen was Schitt's Creek, the writing, the acting, all of it top notch.
If you wanna go somewhat old school, there was a one season show in 2000 called Freaks and Geeks, search that one out, spoiler, it ends with the main female character running away to join the 1981 Dead tour.

For a skeleton, He's got a killer Dew.

Will look for Schitt's Creek. Knew it was on just never checked it out.

Also track down the one season that Burnsey posted.

Watching the latest seaside chat I was surprised to hear Dave say that the present release (#51) represents something of neglected era that they're going to try to focus on more. And I thought, dude, wtf?

#51 is 1971. Dave's #49 was also 1971. And if my math is correct, this is the 5th DaP out of 51 to come from 1971. And that's not to mention Ladies and Gentlemen, the Grateful Dead, Skull & Roses, Dicks 2 and 35. How is that a neglected era?

But then I realized that #51 and #49 could definitely be considered different eras: one of 'em is the "saloon band" quintet, the other has Keith. Likewise, #47 (from 1979) kind of got lumped with what some people felt was an overabundance of '70s stuff, but it is definitely a different era than any of the other official releases (that I know of) from the '70s. Because it's the beginning of the Brent era.

And then it hit me like a Blinding Flash of Duh: Decades are not eras. Years are not eras. An era may last more than a year, or less. A decade might have two eras, or several.

Anyway, looking forward to this one. The 'saloon band' generally doesn't blow my mind like some other eras, but they're always a rockin good time. And I could use one of those right about now.

I have just received the shipping mail for Dave's Picks 51 from the Dead.net store. That is sooner than I had imagined possible. Now the wait as the small package makes its way across the world. Hopefully it will only take two weeks to cross the pond to the Netherlands.

Edit: It turns out that the tracking number is for DHL eCommerce which is new to me for packages from Dead.net.

It seems to me that it is a bit misleading, breaking the Dead's shows down in terms of years. As Crow suggests, the first part of 1971 is very different from Fall 1971, with Keith, which sounds much closer to 1972. That's the most marked change in style within one year - but another is 1969. The first half of that year, the culmination of their psychedelic phase, is quite different in feel to the shows in the second half of the year when Working Mans songs and the country covers started to appear.
No Dave's from the first half of 1969 yet - amazing considering how great those shows were.

Crow meant Dave's #48, anyways. Yeah! eras are a trip. I feel the same for 1973 now. Though it's not a personnel line up era rather an "album" era. It's the August recording month that serves as the divider. To me it's the difference of "Weather Report Suite; Let it Grow" and subsequent jammings. Though that is more of an era within an era, the same band line up just different tunes.

30 years, 4 eras per year equals 120 eras.

Of course goofin, but to me the band was always alive and changing.

That is what makes it so interesting.

It is awesome that they are working with DHL to get the EU heads their fix quicker.

I watched the seaside chat last night and if my memory serves me correctly, Dave was implying that spring ‘71 was under represented, and specifically April ‘71.
I recall him saying that there were several shows from April ‘71 that were considered for release, and that the others will be released too.

He also said that he recently reviewed the artwork for #53, which would imply that the show has been chosen.

He also seemed excited about what is coming later this year. Of course, he’s always excited.

I’ll subscribe to Dave’s 2025 right now if that would qualify me for a second bonus disc (or download).

Yeah I think the Vince & Bruce era pick is coming this autumn. Judging from the 30 Dead Days downloads of recent years there are some great shows of that era I bet! I got to thinking of eras within eras and a perfect example of that recently would be 2021, with the releases of Dave's #39 & #40. The heavy organ and bass sound of the spring Philly 1983 show juxtaposing with the light as tinkling rain and bright as sparkling stars sound of Brents keys at Deer Creek 1990, arguably his last best shows. What a long and awesome strange trip!

I know that both Harding shows (11/6/71 & 11/7/71) circulate in good audio—11/7 was an FM broadcast, BUT they're such good shows they deserve the official treatment, IMO. Does their already circulating status factor them out? Could there be a copyright issue with the station that broadcast 11/7? Full soundboards of both shows. Historic value? And the Dark Star>Other One>MAMU>Other One is interstellar. the transition back into TOO is like none other I've ever heard. 4 CD Harding remastered release please, esp. if '71 is underrepresented. : ^ ) : ^ ) : ^ )

Being in circulation, or FM broadcast, does not preclude official release.
The contents of DaP51 are in circulation, and 6-19-76 (that awesome ‘76 Box) was broadcast on FM.

I agree with Birchwood - that's a great show. Hopefully the readily available FM sourced versions won't mean it's off the table for an official release. It didn't stop them putting out 5/8/77, or various others available unofficially, so here's hoping.

Nice. I almost bought one after your post. Except, I have a great subwoofer and I would have been buying it for inventory should mine have trouble. But mine is still kicking hard. Subs do change the entire soundscape created. Took me a long time to realize, no, there is not someone knocking on my door.

I can only imagine how good close to the edge vinyl must be. Yeah I became much more of a home body once I got the subwoofer. Gonna be doing a partial couch tour with some of the Phish tour. Thought about the $600+ for whole tour, except they kind of force you to watch them faster than I can digest. I mean GD still king in this household. But really love Phish, huge 90's Phish fan.
