Dave's Picks Vol. 51: Scranton Catholic Youth Center, Scranton, PA (4/13/71)

Look out Big Boss Man, Pigpen's on the loose! We're shedding our lovelight on the not-to-be-overlooked Spring 1971 tour with DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51, featuring the complete unreleased show from the SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 AND the 2nd set from the previous night at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA on 4/12/71.

These gems find the original Grateful Dead quintet delivering some of their most inspired, energetic, and tightest performances. There's a dab of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, a splash of AMERICAN BEAUTY, a great foreshadow into what would soon appear on SKULL & ROSES. And you'll need nearly all those fingers (or those toes) because - count 'em - there's eight classic covers ("Mama Tried," "Hard To Handle," and a rare "I Second That Emotion," to name a few) done as only the Dead could do them with Mr. McKernan and his magical harmonica.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 51: SCRANTON CATHOLIC YOUTH CENTER, SCRANTON, PA 4/13/71 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

P.S. We had a little extra room on Disc 2, so please enjoy the final five DP48 bonus tracks to complete 10/24/70, St. Louis, MO.

....the misses and I are celebrating our 25th next month. Sept 11th (we got married two years before 9/11. I've never forgotten our anniversary lol). Heading to Sedona AZ for a few days of hot tubbing R & R, hiking, hot air AM ballon rides and a steam train tour. Oh. And food. Lots of food. It will be our first time there.

    Good morning, rockers!!!

Been laying low, trying to navigate through the minefields of life.........

On vacation. Today is my 10th weddinmg anniversary, I get to spend the day with the woman I love, who makes my life better evry day, who fights like a champion against the viscious hatreds of cancer............

    Also on tap for today:
    Buy a resonator guitar.
    Go antiquing.
Later, chow down on some bison.

Despite the vissisitudes of life---and death---life is good. Savor it, luxuriate in it.....

And remember to listen to the music.................

We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.....

    Sorry for your loss, Jim.

My dad passed two years ago this month. But as people sometimes say, he's still with me. Just this morning I went down to Home Depot to pick up some stuff from their nursery, and I flashed really vividly about doing that kind of thing with my dad. He liked to garden, and he liked to go to nurseries and putter around and pick up some flowers or a shrub for the backyard, so we would often be there early in the morning to pick up a few things. And he was right there with me today.

Such a long long time to be gone. But then again, not really gone. Not completely.

I'm going out to plant some flowers. Have a great day y'all.

How ‘bout 54 with bonus?

Uh,
I haven’t thought that far…

Sorry for brining it up.

Wait, let me come up with something.

11-11-67. 2 CD’s?
Then CD 3 and bonus filled with other 67-68 fragments of shows that are in the Vault.

Primal GD Dave.

When thru again last night. It definitely has its place in the canon. However, I
can really notice the over driven recording. My ears have been ringing. I only cranked it full volume for a few minutes but wow, I am sure the folks left that night ears ringing. Love all the opinions discussed here. Being so early
in sound system development, it does have its flaws.

I posted an article 9 years ago which was a discussion with Dan Healy in 1991. They asked him where is the weakest point in sound reinforcement. He responded that a lot more work and research was need in microphones. My thoughts, I believe it has been in the last 5 years where we can see how far Bear's thoughts have been adopted, researched, and spread forth to the burgeoning number of line array PA companies we see today.

I am still a touched peeved that the Sphere chose holoplot to be its in house PA. I am sure it sounds great, just wished they would have gone with Meyer.

Guess tonight ends the residency.

Thanks guys for extending the golden road.

Just found a 2020 interview with Dan at live for live music. Maybe a little buzz and a read.

Stu said "it was time to just make a fun album". It is indeed fun. Total 180 from The Silver Cord. These guys are amazing. It's probably their most accessible release in four years. Great album to drive to. Check it out!

Just read a great interview with Featherstone about sphere production etc, fascinating. Think it was from Relix? Sound through glass panels? That doesn’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy lol

Ok, am I the only one who has noticed two mentions of our senators clandestine conference in Vegas recently, but nothing…?..crickets, no intel, no stories..no newspaper headlines? Hmmm, somtin don’t smell right?
Hope it’s not coming from that hidden bunker beneath vguys back yard ; )

I heard them via my son a few years ago

I know "Rattlesnake" and recall one other track

How many albums have they made?

If they come through Seattle maybe I'll go. If tickets arent $300 each or something

No Seattle show. The Gorge? Yes.

After my most recent event at the Gorge...never again.

Every freakin band in the world plays Seattle. Except those i would like to see.

Portland!
Spokane!
Vancouver BC!

But Seattle? Nope.

Listened to some of Scranton again this evening. Last Sunday at the Deer Creek Phish show, the brother who pulled up behind me was listening a very recognizable Crazy Fingers. Yep! Sure enough, Autzen, '90, DaP 44. So then we moved on to July 18 DaP 40. Good times indeed (it all rolls into one....).

They have 197 shows up on the archive.

Just downloaded Quarters off boob tube.

I had Polygondwanaland in stock.

Quarters is sounding good.

ADDED FYI - the king has a web site with a bootleg section giving away soundboard stuff.

Thanks to the good folks in customer service, I received my re-sent copy of 51 yesterday here in Norway... er... North Carolina. If the series doesn't go to digital offering like the boxes, I may be done after this year. You know it's bad with the mails when the gov't water company says not to mail check payments because so many are getting lost in the mail.

To me, 51 is an interesting historical document on par with the houseboat tapes but that's about it. The liner notes say the H2H is perfectly played, yet the one on Ladies & Gents is tighter by far. The distortion mentioned by others seems worst at the end of each 4/13 set with some nasty "flutter." I didn't see Plangent mentioned on the package.

They can only do so much. To do anything else during a production of a pick, inadverntently or not, would jeopardize authenticity, IMHO, of course!!!! lol

Nope but getting a half inch 2 days ago was a surprise. Flooding just doesn't happen here since we got one of the last dams built in the west on our Uncompahgre R. in 1987. I heard the Dolores R. had some minor flooding. Happy to have moisture totals still above yearly averages thanks to rainy May/June and now again almost an inch here in Aug. which is a bit early for monsoon season. After 10 years of drought where we never make our annual 10 inch average. Doc gets that much in one storm! We are sending it downstream, lol.
Cheers

I’m on my 4th listen and probably won’t reach for it again for a long time.
The 12th sounds better to me.

Good historical document. I didn’t read the liner notes, so don’t know if Dave says why this was picked over another night. Might be saving better sounding shows for later.

Proudfoot - I’m thinking an old Calgon commercial, “‘Ancient Chinese secret’, eh Mr Lee?!”
Both a New Potato Caboose (1971 Edit) AND a 1969 Dupree on Dead satellite on one short drive today - must buy a lottery ticket! Like catching a leprechaun! 🍀
Recently got a mint copy from the UK of a hard to find CD called/by a group called “LA Getaway”. Always on my radar but always at “Collector” prices, pretty decent listen. Band (Chris Ethridge - Burritos; Joel Scott Hill - Canned Heat; the late Johnny Barbara - Turtles/Starship) made this one record, and dropped out of sight. Fun chasing an elusive item on your “must have” list, fewer and fewer like it now.

I'll bite. I'm guessing that's a "Sherman", as mentioned in "Do You Feel Like I Do?" by Peter Frampton, laced with PCP.. I remember a guy in Central Park (NYC) back in '79
who was probably selling the same thing. His line (with a heavy NY accent):
"Get your space joints, here...See Star Wars".
